Yes, where can I find this popular online retail music site in Asia?

iTunes? Nope, only available on N. American and parts of Europe.

'Best of breed' management software? Nope, the UI didn't seem too impresive to Koreans (at least to my co-workers) and it seems that very few people even know of iTunes.

Also, iPod isn't that popular in Asia and doesn't have that market buzz.

Asia is a fundementally different market than European or American market and I believe this player will at least sell decently here (with the color screen and overall hardware design)...

    Not really....

Remember, this is a Korean company and in Korea, Christmas is not as important holiday than in United States.

I think they are targetting start/end of school, which is near March - a lot of parents buy mp3 and notebook as graduation presents. So, in fact they made perfect timing considering it will take them about an month to rev. up the manufacturing.

it could be down because of the ISP connection you have or because of CNN or Yahoo's site being down. It seems that to monitor accurately a site being "down", you need to monitor if the server has been brought down, which is hard to do without having access to the server, or if the internet connection to the site has been brought down, which could be done by having multiple sites pinging the servers at random intervals. But that said, internet connections are too flaky to say if my internet connection or yahoo's internet connection has been brought down. So in all, i think it'll be a rather useless stastitics to keep track of.

  4. Who owns the thesis? on 95 (thousand) Theses (for sale) · · Score: 1

There already has been posts about it but who really owns the thesis? Most cases, Ph.D students are considered employees of the university and university usually owns the copyright to the thesis. However, in the United States, most research are funded by the federal government (NSF, etc...). Then shouldn't (at least part) of the thesis belong to the public? Also, in another note, why don't some just start up a free thesis database where people can just submit whatever? Since we would be making our own database, any laws restricting database should not be applicable.

I've been wondering about this. I'm a student now at the college. Can the university really enforce this? I'm paying 30k+ for the education, then how can they get the intellectual property of something I do on their system? Now if I'm getting paid by the university, then I see no problem as it would be the same as being an employee of a private company.

Also, if I make a program, and then creates a clone of it after leaving the university, what rights does the university have? As far as I am concerned, I never signed a NDA with them and I should be free to persue whatever I want.

But this is a different case. When a client pays a programmer to write a software, then the program should be liable for something if the software doesn't work or harms the client. But if I'm creating a program just for the heck of creating a program, it should be free speech. An interesting counter-argument might be that even in speech, you can run into some problems with hate speech or libel. So would there be another subset for programs? Yes, programs are free speech but there are restrictions based on the functionality of the program. Remember, Clinton passed a law couple years back where making a malicious virus and/or distributing it is a federal crime.

But is hd really the bottleneck of the computer right now? I think it depends on what you do. If you play quake, faster hd really don't mean much. For office applications, it doesn't really matter. The only places I can think of that can use a faster hd are servers and dbs. Like right now, I'm running a query on a gig+ db. A fast hd would help a lot. But then again, servers and dbs usually have RAID2+.

On a side note maybe systems like RAID is the way to go. With striping, you theoretically get 2x speed increase (not in practice though). Or maybe hd with multiple reading heads might give far better performance.

I think for Joe Average user, fast hd would not help too much against the cost of developing a radically new technology and implementing it.

Yes that is true. When I did a project on manufacturing, the prices I got quoted were shipping were by weight basis. Which makes sense cause at least in U.S. transportation regulation is based on weight of cargo transported.

Well, not for all applications...for example, databases, you have no control over what gets paged in and out...it is more up to the database. So unless you make your own db that doesn't use any paging (which will be a rather useless database since dbs usually require a lot of memory), sensitive information in the database will always be in some sort of swap file/partition or temporary file.
