I could just buy the components myself and do the same, or do the right thing and just go buy an apple PC from them. There is one reason for this. The "experts" on y2k were in a position to make some big money consulting on y2k projects. Yes there was some problems, but by creating so much FUD about y2k, they put themselves into a position that created a large amount of demand for their services. It wasn't totally a scam, but largely it was. How many software vendors said that they weren't sure about the version of their software that you were running would work, but the upgrade (only $59.95!!) is guaranteed. Truth is, your version would work fine, but the software company benefited from the increased sales. Yes, i think the whole bit was mostly a scam, but no, not 100%. Just 100% smart marketing. While the IT consumers (particularly the large buisnesses) spent a large amount of money, it's the sofware companies and y2k "experts" laughing all the way to the bank (which also overspent on y2k assesments)

I tend to disagree with you. Buisness drives the IT world, and home users are more of a niche market. Furthermore, if one controls the buisness setting, those people who have linux on their desktop at work will more likely buy what they already are familiar with for home use.

Besides, who ever said that Linux must dominate all markets? Anyone who strives to make linux a dominant operating system is missing the point. The effort needs to be put into making it a better OS, and the domination will follow. Linux has never been about the big advertising and commercialism, it's been about doing thing well, and letting the product speak for itself.

The goal should not be to have Linux penetrate into markets such as grandma's house, it should be to make the best OS possible and to let things fall into place. If grandma doesn't use linux, who cares? She might prefer the candy colored macs to match her stained glass windows for all i care.

Microsoft is/was trying to make themselves the answer to every question. I think that is what will make them fail. Linux doesn't have to be the answer to every question, just the answer to some of them.

Any decent size web site tracks what browsers are used to visit their site, and what OS. If you go to sites with a microsoft browser and a microsoft os, you are fighting for the opposite side than what you claim to be on. If you want a site to make itself (netscape/opera)/linux friendly, start hitting with the choice browser and linux. If any decent webmaster sees a growing percentage of hits from linux machines, he/she will make sure that their site works properly for those users. Fight for the good guys.
