  1. Performance comparison on Microsoft Announces W2K Pricing · · Score: 1

I'd like to see a performance comparison between a linux box, and a w2k (the w being windows, not Wolfenstein) server, in a mid size buisness setting (a couple hundred users) where the extra money saved on server softwareby using linux is applied to better hardware for the linux box. Therefore, the same amount of money is spent on each server overall. Since the linux box will have substantially better hardware, i bet it would beat the pants off W2k.
IMHO this is where linux can shine.

    P.S. W2k = Wolfenstein 2000, w2k = windows 2000

At work, our names are descriptive of the machine's location and function. This is set by a standard naming scheme set forth by the powers that be. Val1A01 tells me what location, and what type of server

On my personal network, i'm kinda random. herbert, spaceball1 (my main machine), hellifiknow... named my friend's screwdriver because were couldn't think of a name, and there was a screwdriver (tool, not beverage) on the desk next to it.

When have you heard his name in the news regarding anything that has to do with the governer's job?

This combined with a palm-pilot-like device (when i'm away, i.e. @ the grocery store) using some sort of unobtrusive authentication similar to a proximity card (which will be carried, not worn), coupled with wireless internet access and VPN, would be the way to go. As I mentioned, this system would take at _least_ 30 years to come about, and by that time the web, or another equal opportunity medium will prevail as the source for news.

Paper will soon only hold history, News will be transferred electronically.

Currently only large newspapers have the resources to distribute their publication in mass quantities, and only a few even cover the United States, let alone the world. As more people turn to the web for news, more sites will step up to provide the news. The major players in print will still be around in electronic form, but may others will jump in while it is easy for them to do so. Specialized sites (i.e. /. ) will also flourish.

The press right now has more control that you may think. Anything you read in print has already been pre-chewed for you, and the spin doctors have had their way with it.

Personally, i believe that it may balance things out more, and i'm not sure what would hinder planning: please explain.

  11. Volunteer Representation in the US on Short History of the 21st Century · · Score: 2

If in the future there is an online democracy based on the voting of all citizens, it must be on a volunteer basis. If it were by appointment, similar to Jury duty, poor decisions would be made by people who are uneducated on the subject at hand. A volunteer symposium could function as an auxiliary to Congress along with the current House and Senate, and/or eventually replace both of them. The volunteer aspect of it would let those who are interested in a certain issue voice their opinion, and uninterested parties could opt to not waste their time. Any bill that had a very low voter turnout could be thrown out on the basis that there was no interest in it, either way.

Such a system could introduce what i would call "Do or die legislation". In such a system, the topic of gun control could be raised, if there was low voter turnout, or the vote was near even, the current laws would not change, whereas if the vote was sided either way, the laws would be rewritten to represent the views of the majority. Such a rewrite would then have to be ratified by those who voted for the majority side.

Do or die legislation would probably stop some boneheaded laws from being passed, as either they would get no attention, or then would be voted down.

But then, such a system is very far off into the future. It would obviously require major changes to the Constitution, or would be implemented by another country.

Stopping the export of high encryption, limiting the data transfer rate over POTS. These are two examples of where we would have been better off without government intervention.

I'm not a anarchist, but there are some things that we're better off not having the government touch.

How many of you can rember when you were 13-19 years old and said "parents just don't understand" I have a eerily similar feeling about this. If they don't understand what they're regulating (which i believe most of them don't) they will make bad decisions (they being politicians)

on the other hand, i like the idea that someone else had pointed out in a previous moderation related story. (i apologize for not knowing where i saw it...) if it took two people to moderate a comment down (or up) before it lost a point, two moderators would have to agree. while that doesn't solve the problem totally, and certainly doesn't stop world hunger, it would take two idiots to make a bad decision. I know it would also make it harder to give the good comments the credit they deserve, but based on the statistic that less than 20% of moderation is considered "bad" it would improve things overall. Other than that, i think we have a great system here. i know i deserve the karma i have (we all have to be immature sometime right? but i'm over that...)
