The point is not whether the lone pedophile is a more or less despicable person than anyone else in the chain; the point is that such a ruling has implications far beyond child porn. There is a difference between use and distribution; there is a difference between possession and production. To blur these things will lead to sweeping changes in the way copyright infringement is viewed, among other instances, as the comment by the OP is meant to illustrate. And it is hypocritical for the court to rule this way if it would rule differently were a different technology used (e.g. photocopier). If he had a stack of 500 CDs with mailing labels on them that would be a different story, of course; same as if he had a stack of 500 photocopied magazines.
is whether the court would have the same ruling had he photocopied the naked pictures and kept them in a pile under his bed. Or, indeed, tore out his faves from the magazines and "produced" a new work by stapling together a pile of old clippings. I seriously doubt the court would rule this way in such cases. Had he distributed the CD that would be another issue, but I fail to see how burning the cd is itself producing child porn. The fact is, the law treats producing child porn differently than possessing since production involves the direct exploitation of minors (whereas possession may exploit them but in a very different but less direct way). Another point is that burning the cd is no different from downloading the pics in the first place and keeping them in a folder, or even just looking at them in your browser, copying them to a cache. This is just a way of raising the penalties against someone who is without doubt a criminal but probably not a "producer" of kiddy porn. The problem is that it has implications far beyond the instant case, something a judge should have figured out before making such a ruling.
Please tell us about the television networks in the Arab world that you know of with al-Jazeera's viewership that are more "supportive of those people that are actually striving to produce states in which freedom of expression is built into the constitution."
I don't want to start a holy war here but what is the deal with this seven-year-old Mac troll? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig browsing slashdot when I should be working for about twenty minutes while it attempts to to make me laugh 17 times. At home, while looking at the *BSD troll, which by all standards should be a lot less funny than the Mac troll, I'd be giggling in two minutes, if that.... From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Mac troll is a superior troll. 7-year-old Mac troll addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use the Mac troll over other faster, funnier, more reliable trolls.
As others point out, this isn't corruption at all. How did this get rated insightful? Lincoln took away a lot of rights in wartime, it's true; he even had a yankee anti-war senator sent down to jefferson davis to get him to shut up. But if you look at US history, it was routine to have massive civil liberties violated in wartime, and it still is. It's only recently it occurred to Americans to complain about it (I'm exaggerating a bit of course - there certainly were some voices speaking against wartime repression but not many until the 20th century). It's true Bush is nothing new in this regard; what is new is his absolute arrogance before the rule of law. I'm not sure Lincoln can be accused of that.
I drank shochu when I was in Japan; I liked the flavored ones (shiso flavor is nice) and mixed drinks but I agree, by itself it is terrible. It's as good a mixer as vodka though because it's a clear flavor and it accentuates other flavors you mix it with. I'm surprised I haven't seen it in the US. Korean Soju, however, is pretty popular on the west coast, mostly because some enterprising lobbyist got the state of CA to pass a law declaring Soju is in the same category as wine for bar licensing purposes (meaning it can be sold with only a beer/wine license). Like Shochu, it pretty much sucks on its own, but it's a good clear mixer. I've never drank them side by side but I suspect they are actually basically the same drink.
Apparently this website has a rating system to keep track of how radical a professor is by giving him or her a certain number of black fists. One professor wrote to the website complaining that he had been at lots of anti-war rallies, had spoken at Berkeley, etc. He complained that he thought he deserved at least five fists rather than the four that he received... I'm a lefty professor in southern california and I hope these asswipes visit my class.
I looked at the page, and I don't understand what the fuss is about. In fact, I don't understand a word of it -- it might as well be in another language!
Well screw you both - I'm going to do what everyone else does, whatever's popular, just to set myself apart from those who are constantly trying to set themselves apart!
Yeah right. You're linking to the mint. I suppose you believe NASA when they tell you they landed on the moon too. I know a government conspiracy when I see one; that's why I made myself this copper hat, exclusively out of pre-1971 pennies. It's made out of 150 pennies but it's worth at least four bucks!
When I first clicked the link I got "Nothing for you to see here. Please move along."

Nudity?
You misspelled "large trout."

David Pogue is a beleaguered writer.
...and I, for one, welcome our new cold, cold, overlords!
he was referring to Microsoft employees.

Hmmm... I'm intrigued by your ideas and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Does this mean that Disney cartoons will only have one mouse?
for particularly large values of 7.
I thought that guy was bald....

That's an interesting comment coming from someone who starts out by telling us McCarthy was right. Talk about being surrounded by lunatics....
You misspelled "torrents"

How often do you get security patches and bug fixes for OS/2?
Well screw you both - I'm going to do what everyone else does, whatever's popular, just to set myself apart from those who are constantly trying to set themselves apart!
No wonder you always get "first post".

"D" is the new "C".
