AT&T bought up Centennial and they turned off all the Centennial towers. There is ONE AT&T cell tower now to cover the entire area where I live and the signal strength is POOR. I get "no signal" inside buildings, inside stores, and especially inside metal buildings. Inside my house, service was usually "no signal" or if I was lucky, ONE BAR. I would miss calls, and there were constant dropped calls. I was PISSED. However I have an iPhone and moving to Verizon isn't an option. Even when I put my SIM back in my old Nokia the service was still PISS POOR.
What I did find out through the FCC website, AT&T has turned all the old Centennial towers into ROAMING TOWERS so when I can't get a decent AT&T signal, which is frequently, it jumps me to an old Centennial tower and gives me 5 bars of signal but it says ROAMING here in my home town and I'm charged roaming fees. IN MY OWN HOME I AM CHARGED ROAMING FEES!!
I bought one of those zBoost yx510 boosters. I had an antenna put up on my roof, 22 feet up in the air and I had the inside unit mounted to the ceiling in the center of my house. Now when I'm in my house I get 5 bars of signal, like I used to get on Centennial, before AT&T screwed things up. This booster, and I'm sure others, are great but they only help you in your home, they do no good when you're in a store and have no service there.
BTW, the cell thinging that AT&T sells, is CRAP. You have to have DSL service and it routes your phone calls through the DSL service and they then charge you data rates for doing so. It's not a cell repeater, it converts your cell phone into a wifi phone more or less. And if you walk out of your house or into your house with the AT&T "repeater" it drops the call, it won't do hand offs. The zBoost does do hand offs flawlessly, I can walk in and out of my personal cell bubble inside/outside and there is no glitch, no drop.
AT&T is a bunch of inept thieves. They are crooks and thieves and criminals and they rip people off with the WORST service on earth, period. I despise AT&T with every fiber of my soul and being.
I had to spend $400 on this booster to get back service that I once had. I loved Centennial, they were 100% reliable no matter where I went, no matter where I traveled. I never missed calls, never had dropped calls, I was never over charged, I had GREAT terms of 200 minutes a month outgoing and unlimited 24/7 incoming minutes. I would call people and tell them "hey, call me back" and talk for free for as long as I wanted.
AT&T is garbage. AT&T sucks. Worst company on earth run by criminals that needs to be disbanded and torn down. Capitalism at it's worst.

The other option is to drive way out to the extremely over-priced mall where they sell the same quality imported crap, just at greatly inflated prices and snottier sales people.
The local Walmart is deteriorating just like the old K-Mart did. The theft problem is so bad that they quit bothering to stock a lot of basic things and I have to drive out of town to another Walmart to find just about anything.
I don't know about electronics but clothes and shoe? Nothing. All they sell now are warm up pants and flip flops.
I'll bet the electronics dept is stripped clean.
I expect the local Walmart here will shut down within 5 years.

I just bought a new 3GS and I retired my 1st gen iPhone to "remote control status".
It still functions as a pocket PC plus I am using a remote control app on it to control my home theater system via my WIFI.
It still functions quite nicely as a multi-function, general purpose tool.
Using it around the house in such capactity greatly reduces the wear and tear on my nifty new 3GS..
I just can't believe someone would be so wasteful. If nothing else, give it away to someone that needs one. Many people have never had an iPhone and would be tickled to get a free phone, used, old or otherwise.
I own a Belkin WIFI Skype phone, I used it as a home phone with Skype in/out and in general it's pretty neat BUT, it drops calls, a lot. It drops calls almost as bad as AT&T.
I have a good solid WIFI system and Skype on my iPhone via my WIFI works without flaw. I do not have WIFI issues.
The Belkin randomly drops calls even when I am within 6 feet of the base and it also randomly locks up and randomly reboots.
If you can put up with that, it's neat. If you require flawless service, skip the Belkin. They have not updated the firmware in it since it was first made available.
If you google the device you will see many other complaining of the same problems.

It's a man's world and I bowed out of it due to hostility. Maybe it's because of where I live, lots of backwards thinking people down here. This is deep red neck territory.
I don't like conflict or men coming down on me just because they can. There was just too much so I quit and now I make candles at home and tend to my garden. No pressure and I work for myself now.
They best part? My house smells great and no one is hassling me anymore..:-)

Old 1st gen iPhones are for sale on ebay cheap.
Buy one cheaply and use it as a Skype in/out device, that will work nicely. No need to have cell phone service on it with WIFI everywhere.
Or perhaps install the VOIP app of your choosing. Either way..
Oh and BTW, you can get the Belkin on Amazon.com for like a lot less.
One thing I must give it praise for is good battery life. We could talk on it for hours on end. When it wanted to work, it was great.

And if I'm competent, which I am, I'm seen as a threat and treated as "the enemy"..
The pay is lower and we have to put more nonsense than we should.
Bottom line: we are treated with disrespect and disdain. In general. It's the old "Women should be seen but not heard" problem.
