  1. Sounds soooo sad. Goodbye quality on Young People Prefer "Sizzle Sounds" of MP3 Format · · Score: 1

I think this is one of the saddest things I have heard in my life. It is like the "kiss of death" for all things quality. I wrote a paper on this when MP3s were first becoming popular. The paper never really went anywhere, but the idea (I was a music major at the time making "clean, clear orchestral recordings") that maintaining quality throughout the entire process was key, and having your final recording be "just like the real thing", the badge of success. With compressed format so much of that is thrown out the window. Sad.

  2. Re:Altitude on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 1

Well, actually, I have see better results at altitude (although less power). Modern cars will try to maintain a ratio of fuel to air regardless of condition (based on mass-air flow). So, at higher elevations a vehicle will burn less fuel, since there is less oxygen. (This is not true for 70's era mechanically regulated cars without emmissions, etc.) This is not the case if your car is turbo charged... fuel economy will suffer a bit, but you will have more power -- your turbo will be "working" harder to maintain high air pressure in the cumbustion chamber.

  3. More ammunition on Cheap Audio Production · · Score: 1

Don't give the industry any more ammunition. Soon they will be using this (the home version) in their own ("pro") studios, producing more albums, selling them for less, claiming they are earning less money, get on everyones back about file-sharing, bla bla bla.

  4. They'll do it here! on Mexico to Abolish the Public Domain? · · Score: 1

If they can't keep their own people from running out of the country, how it is they plan to keep these laws enforced? Does it matter? they will just come here to have their babies, and make public domain copies. Probably back-bill to the US taxpayer.

  5. It seems so with watches on Has the Quality of Consumer Electronics Declined? · · Score: 1

It is interesting this topic should come up. I have been following the trend with digital watches for a number of years (about 20) and have come to the conlusions that they are much more flashy, but certainly less function filled than those of old. I think most notably this is true of the Casio line (which I believe had the best product-line about 15 years ago). What happened to innovation? How many ways can you repackage the tired ol' "G Shock"? How many watches have touch sensitive screens now?, or multi-depth displays (which show actual useful information?)

  6. Stinkin' Shame... on Music Industry Pays $67M Fine For Price Fixing · · Score: 1

It is a stinkin' shame that those who have actually been ripped off (you know, US the consumer) will probably never see any of the money in the form of lower CD costs in the future, etc. I hope the politicians who benefit from their "finding the truth" spend that money on something other than spamming us with stupid snail-mail, or on mudslinging adds about how their opponents bought less cd's and were therefore un-american.

  7. Re:Those are not echos. on Software Based Echo Cancellation? · · Score: 1

I think it is important to keep in mind, that unless they are in the Superdome the two feet distance separating the speakers is not going to cause any "echo". I concur with the notion that the room is causing the problems, not the hardware. In fact, if multiple mikes were picking up any given speaker, the signal would actually be of a higher amplitude.

  8. Why is an enemy always needed. on Hyperreality: The U.S-China Standoff · · Score: 1

I understand that a great deal of 'doctrine' has been written on the subject, but seeing we have managed to continue as a world community into the 2100's one would think it would be possible to, well, get along. What is the true value of having enemies? Clearly it keeps the military machine well lubed, but there are the unaffiliated enemies , terrorists, which are just as much a threat to all the superpowers, Asian and Anglo. What is really the point? This event in particular seems to be a loose-loose situation for both parties, whomever is really "guilty" of having done something wrong --> the truth of which will probably be argued for years into the future (since the flight crews are probably bound by secrecy documents to never reveal the truth, etc.). What is really the point! Thorbo

  9. You have got to be kidding... on DirecTV's Secret War On Hackers · · Score: 1

You Hackers/Crackers out there were beat by a buch of old nerds at a Satellite company? Well, I guess you loose your chance to gloat for a little while. Will this event raise the bar? Will innocent sites collapse under the weight of a google of hackers who will be trying to make themselves feel better by disrupting everyones service?

  10. Bail gracefully on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

There are always other options to bailing out and leaving everyone in the lurch. Perhaps you can talk to the people offering you the new jobs, and (in light of the current situation in finding qualified employees) get them in process as well. It could turn into a win-win for you and your associates. After all, if your current company is going to "eat it" at your leaving, try to help out those who you feel are most worthy, both in personality and in ability. God knows they will appreciate it, too. Plus, what does it hurt to build up some positive Karma points.

  11. Re:Usefulness? on Spherical Motor Creation · · Score: 1

It seems that in the "rigors" of space, many of these problems will not be issues, since there will not be gravity weighting down on various attachments, and when they are stopped, it will take very little power, and only the occational input to keep them from acutally continuing to move around.

  12. Re:cell tech on Solar Cells For Laptops? · · Score: 1

Finally someone thinking -- How many posts does one have to read on prior to one voice making sense!?

  13. Screw the "Great Satan"...this is a master stroke! on Microsoft Hires Ralph Reed As Lobbyist · · Score: 1

Now, this is a great idea if you are guilty, and can get the potential Presidents "man" to work on your team...talk about future promise. Now, will this make it easier for MS to move, as they will, in the future? Of course, there is no benefit if GB doesn't meet with success...who knows about that.
