  1. Re:Backward images!! on Yopy Running Game Boy And Heretic · · Score: 1

I agree... this is weird... the GUI is backward, making the theory that they used the onboard camera to take a picture of itself in a mirror substantiate, but the YOPY text IS correct... meaning that on the unit itself, the YOPY text would have to have been written in a mirrored fashion... can you say conspiracy?

I for one am astonished at the rampant use of steroids in the Olympic games. I mean, come on, can't anyone get by naturally. And now, we have to worry about steroids falling from the sky and hitting the Earth, taking out our entire civilization. This has gone far enough!

    huh?

    oh, Asteroids... nevermind.

My Motorola PageWiter 2000 already has multi-player games written for it. It just uses the packet-based 2-way paging network.

So far the only one I've actually played against someone else is Battleship, but it's pretty cool.

But then again, it's a pager with a multitasking microkernel os (FlexOS), QWERTY keyboard, GUI, and scripting language to write your own programs in called FlexScript... basic-like but cool.

My point is, it's kind of cool to be able to pull out the pager and play games while waiting for the bus or plane, or even in boring meetings. People just think I'm checking my email... of course, sometimes I forget to turn the sound off and then I get caught!!!

Besides, I just patented "the use of punctuation marks to indicate a direct quote"; feel free to use double quote marks (or any other punctuation mark), just be prepaired to pay a royalty to me...

  14. *toy* languages for kids on No Logo: Taking Aim At The Brand Bullies · · Score: 3

As a lot of other posts concur, any of the BASIC dirivatives are a good idea. VB, although poor at developing high-availability, cross-platform applications, is just fine for a youngster to start out in.

There are also those *toy* programming languages based on eiffel and Smalltalk put out by Lego and others. Those are great. Hell, Smalltalk is pretty wonderful as it is, and quite easy to pickup.

Just because we as professional developers know of a languages limitations, doesn't mean it isn't *programming*. Remember, what's basic to us, is still quite a bit over their heads!

Unless you had kids just to turn out a team of software engineers, I would start them out with something simple. If you try to through a command line compiler and debugger at them and expect any results, you have another thing coming... especiialy if they are heavy into games and graphical stuff...

  15. Re:HTML cannot be copyrighted, but... on Is HTML Copyrightable? · · Score: 1

You make a valid point... except, it's not the presentation of the data that you are copyrighting, or the C++ code itself that you would be protecting.

Rather, it is the logic, the specific algorithm, that you are trying to protect. And remember, that algorithm can be written in other languages than C++, just like that protected thesis paper can be presented with other markup "languages", like SGML or Rich Text Format.

HTML is just a markup language... is RTF copyrightable? How about Postscript? Is ASCII text copyrightable? No.

Why do I post? Because I have an opinion just like you and everyone else, and when things like this come up, and it could affect me or my business, then I feel the need to share that opinion.

First of all, this is a non-issue because everything you can do with HTML has been done 1000 times before... hell, they probably stole the code themselves.
