  1. Re:Arguments Against on The Case for Free WiFi? · · Score: 3, Insightful

"If you want a social, living coffeeshop, I'd say cut off the internet access. People go to a coffeeshop to relax with friends, listen to jazz, or curl up in a comfy chair with a big book. As much of a netaholic as I am, there has to be a balance somewhere."
BAH! I don't know if I can disagree with this more. The coffeeshop that I frequent has all of the above AND a good number of customers who get online. There is almost NO gaming and NO JAZZ.
It's not a beatnick hangout for those with receding hairline pony-tails and Birkenstocks(oh, if you are reading this and are offended, good!) It's a coffee shop for people to get together or study or read or play games or get online!
Plus, since when do those type of people you described spend tons of money? Stopping in to get a half-caff soy latte with nutmeg on top before you catch the latest screening of Fellini's Satyricon does not break the bank!
Sorry, I meant that buying a small hazelnut coffee and a scone then reading Bukowski for four hours is NOT going to give any shop owner fat pockets!
Simply put, value added services like free WiFi can only help this type of business...when offered wisely!
My rant is finished! Be online or be damned!

  2. Free WiFi brings in business! on The Case for Free WiFi? · · Score: 1

I have to plug Panera Bread for their free WiFi.
Why? Because I am currently sitting in one of their locations in St.Charles, MO using their FREE WiFi connection!
Why did I choose Panera when I could have tried to find another, closer hotspot? Because I knew that they have free WiFi(thanks, /.!), I made the trip a couple of miles to a Panera(Ok, St.Louis Bread in the STL area) and got lunch here BECAUSE OF THIS ADDED SERVICE.
I don't think that I am the minority here, either!
It's really nice to know when I am traveling, I can get online at a Panera Bread. Plus, I don't think twice about buying something while I am here. It's just the right thing to do.

  3. Skeptical Inquirer on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

Skeptical Inquirer:I buy every issue of it and read every article...okay, every article that isn't completely over my head. Not everything in it is for the average joe, but that's okay...there is a lot to be learned in there.
Smithsonian is a brilliant magazine that is beatuiful to boot. I think that it really puts National Geographic to shame. Something there for anyone who wants to explore.
2600: I only get for the hot women in it...uhhh...wait...I am mixing that up with something else.
Linux Journal. I like their linux articles. Not too technical, not too newbie.
Juxtapose for some insight into the cutting edge pop art world.
Alternative Press while on a quest for some new music to listen to.

Ok, now I don't feel so bad. I showed up about 7:05 and wandered around Jillians looking for anyone. I didn't see a soul. At this point, I remembered why Jillian's was a bad idea. That place just sucks. It doesn't help that it's downtown AND there was a Aeros game.
After about 5 minutes of wandering about, I left. Might I suggest another location next time? Cafe Momus by Akron U would be much better. It has a meeting room, it's easy to park, they are tech friendly and if we decide, we can go somewhere else that has booze, downtown is three minutes away!

  7. Crime Wave...just release it again! on Ask Bruce Campbell Anything... · · Score: 1

I am one of the few folks out there that have seen Crime Wave multiple times. I guess that makes me one of the few that likes the movie!
I find it to be truly a shame that this movie is just being ignored by the makers because of the fiasco it became during the production. Even with all of it's flaws(the main actors), Crime Wave it a truly enjoyable picture!
When are the makers of this movie finally going to realize that it's not that bad and that it deserves to be release, on DVD, so that people can see the early films of these fine film makers?!?

Ya know...I never really noticed(until King Sean posted) that if you look really closely at the /. logo, in small print, it says: "News for Nerds for those who are better than others. Stuff that matters to only the coolest." I never noticed that before.
Thanks Sean for making us realize that you are so much better and smarter than the rest of us!

  9. Re:They are doing what Napster asked... on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 2

"Stealing MP3s is illegal." There is a problem with this statement. You CANNOT assume that everyone on Napster is trading illegal music. You can't. Period. Here is wher NetJunkie doesn't have a CLUE... "If CDs cost too much, don't buy them. Eventually the market will evolve where they are cheaper." It's amazing how WRONG you can be. CD prices have done nothing but go up since their debut in the mid-late 80's even though the cost of producing them has plummeted. What's the most expensive part of a CD? The jewel case. Yet the cost of buying a CD has gone up and up, well past the cost of vinyl LP production. The price of CD will continue to go up and we will continue to be gouged.

  10. hmmmm...Now to rule on Napster... on Supreme Court Rules ISPs Not Liable for E-mail Content · · Score: 1

Just apply the same decision to the Napster case and you will see a haunting similarity. "... that ISPs(in this case, Prodigy), are not liable for the content of e-mail messages sent through them." becomes "...that services(in this case, Napster), are not liable for the content of files sent through them." I just hope that this is the outcome.
