Beautiful hypocracy. Copyrights are therefore only applicable in the case of you owning them. Everyone ELSE's copyrights should obviously be ignored.

Dr. Dre should become the spokesperson for the "copyright is dead" movement, whether he likes it or not.

  2. Re:Kodak DC215? on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1

Yes, I got a Kodak DC215 Zoom a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it and recommend it to anyone looking to get a digital camera.

First off, the pictures are good quality, and the resolution goes up to 1152x864 (or you can do 640x480). There are settings for the "Quality" as opposed to the resolution, and those are "Good", Better", and "Best". Since it saves a JPG, I assume this is just the amount of compression.

The unfortunate part is that it cames with only a 4 meg card. The 4-meg card holds around 12-16 highest res images, and around 32 good quality 640x480 pics.

    I personally got a 32-meg card, which holds like 480 640x480 images, or around 115 highest-quality images.

More importantly, the camera has a 2x optical zoom. This means when you look in the view finder (not the LCD screen), you can zoom in and out and see it. This is important as the LCD screens eat battries on any camera. Additionally, they have a "closeup" mode for taking pictures of things that are around 6 inches away.

I have 3 photos that I took with the camera, all completely unretouched and straight off the camera:
First, just a regular shot off my balcony, 1152x864:

Next, I did the 2x optical zoom to zoom in as much as possible:
    http://www.slothy.com/dc215-002.jpg

Finally, I took a picture of some tree branch using the "closeup" mode:

To finish this off, the camera DOES work in gphoto. I get a lot of timeout problems, but if you leave it be, it does the job well.

The problem here is that you're using an SMP box and Mozilla is not yet thread-safe, though I have NO idea why they don't put this is big bold letters on the M13/14 pages. So people with a single CPU have a fairly rock-solid browser, and people with SMP boxes think this should probably be Milestone 3.

    The bug for this is:

I just called, and really there are enough people calling that you can just tell them you'd like to oppose the UCITA bill. They'll get your name and address, and that's it. You don't need to prepare any inspiring rant or anything. They just count your vote, essentially.

  5. Re:Mozilla is good... on Mozilla Will Be Netscape 6.0 · · Score: 2

First off, I'm sure others will mention that this story is not really true. It isn't certain that it will be called Netscape 6.0 (or 2001, either). Check out http://www.mozillazine.org for more of this discussion.

But in regard to your post, you're confused about the Mozilla/Netscape seperation. Mozilla will NOT be capable of SSL, due to at the very least the RSA patents. However, since Netscape will be binary, it will be able to do SSL.

Mozilla is also different from Netscape. Yes, the interface needs tweaking, but Gecko, the layout engine, is effectively finished. It could be that Netscape has a whole different layout (XUL interface) for the branded browser than the Mozilla one, and they could have that in a better state than the Mozilla interface. Who knows?

As far as people saying that Mozilla is slow, go look into the project a bit. Performance enhancements have not been rigorously done yet, and everyone is also using debug builds. I have been using Mozilla for all my web browsing since M13 came out, and I'm very happy with it.

We're still fighting the problem of people believing stories in media about Mozilla. Oddly, when the media say the kernel is late, people bitch and moan about how open source projects ship when they're done. When the article is about Mozilla, people blindly believe that Mozilla must be suffering.

Interestingly enough, many of the people complaining seem like they haven't even tried using Mozilla yet. Go grab M13 from http://www.mozilla.org folks, then give your feedback to the mozilla developers. But it's just silly to comment on a product you've never even used.

  6. First Thoughts on Linux Unreal Tournament Available · · Score: 1

Having played the windows client fairly extensively, I have to say how impressed I am with the Linux port. There are minor speed issues (i.e. I have to run it in 1024x768 to get the comparable speed of 1280x1024 in windows), and there are very noticable slow-downs that occur while playing which don't occur in the Windows client. However, I think all of these have more to do with drivers than with anything that Epic could contol. (for reference, I have a Celeron 333 overclocked to 375 and a Voodoo3 3000)

The port itself is impressive -- they must have implemented their own font libraries, etc., because it looks exactly like the windows version. Everything is in there... count this as a real win for us Linux folks ;)

now they're considering switching back to Unix, because they lost a lot of companies looking to hire grads... seems they don't want Windows programmers.

Ironically, the biggest impediment to going back to Unix is that a few of the faculty don't know Unix and don't want to learn.

    Go figure.

Pixel is doing tv video editing in Finland, last I heard.

PSI and someone else (Trug maybe?) have been working as the "Bitboys Oy" (www.bitboys.fi) designing a 3d chip called the "Glaze3D".

I actually don't know what became of Purple Motion, but Skaven went back to doing graphics of some sort.

naah. We became most well known back in the BBS days when our ansis were plastered all over a lot of great boards, but even in the early packs we released "VGAs". Technically, iCE is a group that focuses on digital arts. We have released a Music Disk with Renaissance (that means something to the old demo scene guys), called Epidemic, and we've got an amazing team of hi-resolution artists. In the future, watch out for a new foray into music, and I'm going to be releasing an open-source, open-content multiplayer 2d java game soon. We're mostly just a group of good friends who all help the group in our own little way, and coincidentally we release artwork for free on a monthly basis. It's a great bunch of people, and we have a lot of fun together.
