> This is why the ghods invented PGP signatures, to authenticate your transmissions. No spammer wanna-be should be able to use that.
I don't know of any spammer, wannabe or not, that sends spam with pgp signatures?!?! What in the blue hell are you referring to?
> Moreover, it would be a violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, since it would be both forging your communications and attempting to interfere with your *other* communications. And since you're a business with a real product, you're likely to get a far more usable response than the usual circular filing performed by law enforcement about existing abuse.
Spammer already interfere with every day communications by getting real domains blacklisted all the time. This doesn't stop them, and although it is illegal, when was the last time you heard about a sting operation of a suspected spammer!?!?
> It doesn't matter if the patch/fix is out there, people have to apply them. Recent Window problems had patches out weeks before there was even a problem.
People don't apply Microsoft patches because they want their Microsoft OS to be as stable as possible, and this just happens to be a good way to lose that stability. I've known many users whose machine would no longer start up after going to WindowsUpdate and selecting everything, in addition here at work things break when patches are applied.
I have yet to come across a user whose machine was hosed after installing an RH update rpm!
It always cracks me up on how they try to protect cd's from being copied that aren't worth copying. Not that much of the music coming out of the RIAA these days is worth a shit, but at least other artists actually have an established base of fans.
I like the good ol Qmail Toaster. They are rock solid, support many standard rpm distributions and don't need much fussin to get working.
Quick note about DSL hosted e-mail, be sure to relay your e-mail through your isp's mail server. Sending directly from your DSL doesn't typically work for many big name isp's.
Yeah but this sounds like a good way to put small companies out of business.
For example, say I sell cheap wireless aps online @ cheepaps.museum. Someone other geek who failed to recognize me as the alpha geek in High School decides to spam for my business in the hopes that I will face a lawsuit. I get sued under "conspiracy to deliver spam". I then gotta get lawyers involved and fight to keep my business going. New alpha geek takes command!!! See how this sucks for me! See how this could be an attack on anything but the largest of companies with tons of cash in the reserves!
Uhm, although I already commented on how funny your comment was, I must also point out that Microsoft has in the past distributed their software with Virus(es) included, nfo files from warez groups and a few other misc goodies. There have been a great many mixup with what gets distributed from Microsoft.
I would be worried if I knew my car ran Windows. I'd be even more worried when they start selling underground roms that change settings. Remember they do sell car chips that tweak fuel efficiency and power output.
I can see the headlines now "Rice Rocket Crashes on Rise! Microsoft releases Windows CarOS SP1"

I could be wrong, but it appears that they manage more than just A. And as you know, A is the primary Root DNS Server. All the others grab their info from A. So unless ICANN is able to get the IP address back for A, or is somehow able to get everyone to change their root nameservers on every dns program out there it is going to be a bitch to get rid of the Verisign stranglehold on DNS.
I really hate how they have regular TV commercials before movies in the theaters now, but I hate missing the previews. Targetted advertising is a very powerful tool that needs to be used more!
Things like previews in a move theater are advertising the way it should be, maybe some day those assholes that spam me will realize that I am a stud and am not in need of no fucking viagra!
Would that be the same situation if I buy say Redhat Enterprise Linux AS 3? How about if I buy SuSE Linux Pro? Lindows? See the situation, it's no longer just published works, it's a packaged and polished product that is sold in stores! I am not a lawyer (woulda put IANAL, but I always pronounce it eye anal) but I would think that it would be the same for any software company.
Whoa an AC with some insight. Windows 2000 had a single-threaded boot, kind of like Linux. Load things one by one and in order. Win XP came out with a multithreaded boot process, which brings the system up faster. However it only appears to be ready sooner, it takes the same amount of time to get into a usable state.
My thoughts exactly. When reading this I instantly thought DivX is back. I think one of the following things will happen.
1) It gets hacked and people start grabbing movies right out of the air 2) It doesn't sell and gets discontinued 3) They remove the 24 Hour limit, and go flat rate (IE Netflix w/o Snail Mail)
Personally I can see the third option being a good business model, but knowing how Disney operates it will probably be unnamed option #4
4) Buy a senator, make watching t.v. illegal unless you pay disney for the right.
Computer lab not cluster, LAB. Linux equiv or not, the ability for non-geeks to use it efficiently could be the tie-breaker. Sure for you or I a switch from Office2k to Office XP would be easy, but for non-geeks it's like pulling teeth. Believe me, I've downgraded back to O2K to a great many users in my desktop support days. It's even worse teaching users to go from O2K to OO.
I agree with you. Using either kickstart or sysimager to dole out custom Linux installs with all machines running autorpm to a local update mirror. That way you can simply put all the new rpm's that you'd like to have on all machines and let em pick it up in the morning.
it would most definately fit on a usb pen drive though. Making the machine much more silent than an HD or a CD would be. However Rdesktop only works well if you are going with Win2K Term Serv, which is stuck at 256 Colors:(
I agree with the the full blown xp not being a good solution. If you were to use Linux w/ rdesktop (Win2000 Term Serv) or Winconnect on the client end, it would probably perform really well and save you a lot of money on licensing. Unless of course the machines already included XP.
As long as the servers got what you need, and the power users got full on machines, you shouldn't have a problem.
Not entirely sure, but I must ask.. Was the RPC problems found by Microsoft or a third party? I know MS typically ignores problems until it makes them look bad or someone releases an exploit. Just because Microsoft fixed it before blaster, doesn't mean they fixed it due to their Quality Control procedures. How many bugs have and are left unpatched, because Microsoft hasn't gotten around to it? I remember reading that when 2K came out, there were over 65K bugs, and I know it seems like we've installed that many when we run WindowsUpdate, but I don't think there have been 65K patches!
However if you notice, all the OpenSSH bugs were fixed before any exploits were available and due to their own QC procedures. Writing perfect code is impossible, but fixing it before others get a chance to hack it is impressive in my book.
Good one there, secure telnet has yet to show any weekness. Good ol standard SSL wrapping telnet is an unbeatable match. But most people don't have this client lying aorund anywhere and thus use ssh because of convenience.

If it requires a Win2k/XP device driver to protect the cd from being copied, then us "GNU hippies" don't have to take any extra steps to copy this cd.
It always cracks me up on how they try to protect cd's from being copied that aren't worth copying. Not that much of the music coming out of the RIAA these days is worth a shit, but at least other artists actually have an established base of fans.

LOL! When I read your post I spit up my drink.
Gotta love sarcasm.

hehe, I was diggin all your info until you said "reliable and tested" in the same sentence as Win98!

Newsflash genius, most people don't use slackware. In addition not having pam normally is not something to be proud of!
Install the src rpm, change the apache banner, recompile and install!
That should keep this goofball away from you for a while!
Personally I like autorpm.
Autorpm with a cron job can add custom rpm's, update custom rpm's and update the distro. All based on perl.
Automatically cron's itself too, perfect for mass updating using local mirrors.
How many were remote root exploits?
Good one there, secure telnet has yet to show any weekness. Good ol standard SSL wrapping telnet is an unbeatable match. But most people don't have this client lying aorund anywhere and thus use ssh because of convenience.
Personally I agree, secure telnet is better.
Overburn man, you can fit all that just perfectly on a standard 80 Min CD.
