  1. Qwest Small Business SDSL on Cable Beats DSL For Average Speed · · Score: 1

I've got Qwest's Megabit SDSL service running to my house. Even though it's a "Business" package, they don't care where they run it, as long as it's close enough to a POP to be able to qualify for the speed.

Unlimited usage, 8 STATIC IP addresses, they EXPECT you to run servers, and they don't care if you run NAT. Did I mention that it's a SYMMETRIC Megabit?

Now, granted, at $180/month, it's more expensive than the $50/month Cable and ADSL plans available in the area. (Metro Detroit, Michigan) But your upstream pipe is plenty wide to support serving multiple websites, and you can sell webspace and access to help defray the costs. Name-based virtual hosts are your friends.

Compared to a T1 line, which around here costs ~$700/month and gets you 1.5 megabit symmetric, and a subnet as big as you can justify to your ISP...

  5. Why I haven't gone to Digital Cable on Cable, TV Makers Agree on Digital Standard · · Score: 1

    Three words: "Set Top Boxes"

I've got cable run to every room in the house. Well, except the bathrooms - my wife wouldn't let me. But then, she wouldn't let me run Cat5 to them either. :(

If we were to get Digital Cable, we'd need a set-top decoder for each room, plus an extra one for every VCR if we wanted to be able to watch one channel while recording another. It's just not worth it.

When manufacturers start releasing TVs, VCRs, and TV-Tuner cards for PCs, I'll probably change my mind. But not before.

  6. embedded (L)GPL Code on GPL Issues Surrounding Commercial Device Drivers? · · Score: 2, Informative

    First, IANAL.

Second, take a look at http://www.gcom.com/home/support/whitepapers/linux -gnu-license.html which contains a post from Linus where he explains that the Kernel Module Interface is actually LGPL.

Next, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.html Read section 5. In particular, the paragraph :

"If such an object file uses only numerical parameters, data structure layouts and accessors, and small macros and small inline functions (ten lines or less in length), then the use of the object file is unrestricted, regardless of whether it is legally a derivative work. (Executables containing this object code plus portions of the Library will still fall under Section 6.)"

This leads one to believe that Binary-Only Device Drivers are A-OK.

Nvida and other graphics board developers aren't the only ones providing binary only drivers.... Adaptec only provides binaries for their RAID controller drivers - no sources at all. Not even
    an "intermediate buffer layer"

The spirit of the LGPL licence seems to be "If you can upgrade the LGPL code without having to recompile the Proprietary stuff, and continue to have everything work, that's ok."

  7. Quit whining about the Parallel port on Shuttle SS51 Reviewed · · Score: 1

Look at the photo of the backside in the review. See the removable plate just above the main system fan that looks like it'd accomodate a DB-25 connector quite nicely?

And if you look closely at the picture of the motherboard (or look at the specs on shuttle's website) you'll find that SURPRISE! the header for the parallel port is still on the board.

If it's that important to you to have a parallel port then, by all means, spend the $5 to buy an add-on parallel port with a cable long enough to reach. The case is only 5 inches tall, and the cutout is directly above the header.

I mean, really, if you're going to pay ~$300 for the case and motherboard combo, plus the cost of everything you're planning on putting on the board or in the drive bays, what's an extra $5??

    Sheesh.

  8. Dude, you're missing the point on Palm OS Emulator Ported to Sharp Zaurus · · Score: 1

If you end up with a large number of programs which were written for PalmOS, then you probably ought to seriously consider buying a Palm.

But what if you're completely happy with your portable Windows device, except for a small handfull of Commercial/Proprietary programs that you would really like/need to run which have only been ported to the Palm? - For which there IS NO analogue written for WinCE or PocketPC?

What do you do then? Do you buy another $200+ handheld just so you can use one or two programs?

Or is saving $200 enough incentive to see if maybe the program will run in an emulator?

Assuming the program would run sufficiently well in an emulator on your Zaurus or whatever, the one major stumbling block I can see is the issue of data synchronization. If an application was written for the PalmOS and a Palm Conduit was written for it, how do you synchronize your data if you're running the app emulated on a CE device?

Has anyone written written a wrapper to run Palm Conduits via the Microsofty Sync-thinghie?
