  1. Re:American Legacy Foundation... on Interesting Commercials · · Score: 1

What would you do if you found out 50 years from now that beer or Jolt cola had byproducts in them that made you addicted to them, and also destroyed your health... hmm well Mt. Dew is rumored to shrink your nuts, and caffine is fairly addictive, that's proven at least.

Cigarettes didn't come with warnings on them until fairly recently, compared with the amount of time that people have been smoking them... and since the tobacco companies have been tailoring their products to get people as addicted as possible, something needed to be done. People dying from emphasymia (sp?) or lung cancer now most likely didn't know 50 years ago that smokin cigarettes would do this to em.

Cigarettes all come with warnings now, so its fairly obvious, but how many other products are ALLOWED to be sold that kill that high a percentage of the people who use em?

I really don't think the shock-value that these ad campaigns utilize is really necessary... anyone who starts smoking now pretty much realizes you can get addicted to em & that they're not good for you. But if the cigarette corporations went under I wouldn't feel sorry for em at all.

"Ordinary" commercials usually annoy people here, but since most companies that air commercials during the superbowl try to make them funny, or at least interesting, (they spend so much fuckin money on em, they better make em good!) some people enjoy watching the commercials as much as the game.

Suffice to say, this years crop of commercials was *definately* not as memorable as last years, or the year before that. The "wassup" commercial became a sudden cultural phenomenon, and the dot-com commercials were fairly good too (40% of the commercials last year were by dot-com companies.) A lot of the dot-com commercials last year were good, mostly because the companies weren't trying to advertise a product, but just get their name recognized.

Half of this year's commercials were advertisements for TV shows on CBS (the network hosting the game) and most of the rest were fairly boring... 4 or 5 memorable ones maybe, the rest I really didn't even like.

  7. Re:This is all well and good on Virtual Child Porn: Is It Illegal? · · Score: 1

The CNN article linked a few comments above states that actual images of children were altered to make them appear in sexually explicit scenes. I don't know if this means taking a 12-year old's head and photoshopping it onto some porn star's body, or taking an artistically-done nude photograph of a child and inserting that whole image into a sexually explicit scene. Either way, the legal case in question deals with actual photographs of children put into sexual scenes, and not CGI or anime style pornography.

Even if it had to be that way, even f it was really 'freedom of expression' that were in danger there would be nothing to think twice: the price is TOO HIGH how can you even think about sacrifying one child ???? in those conditions ?? what exactly are you trying to protect ?? this is nonsense !!

It actually *is* freedom of expression that is in danger here. Many many many "regular" producers of pornography have fought the legal system for their rights to publish ordinary porographic magazines and videos which feature nothing but adults.

You miss the point entirely. You write a very nice long essay about your viewpoints, but you take a very disturbing stance. You say any and all forms of child pornography must be banned so we can prevent sexual abuse of just ONE child. Cause the price is TOO HIGH if that one child gets hurt.

Well I've got news for you, you start taking away freedoms like this, and you won't be able to draw the line ever. CG porn harms no one in its making. No child needs to even pose nude for it. All it takes is someone's imagination. Sure, it is very possibly that viewing child porn may cause someone to want to act out those desires on a child, but whose fault is that? You CANNOT blame the CG porn producer. You blame the sick person who actually commits a crime against the child.

This is for the same reason that it is ridiculous to blame a gun-making company if someone who buys their guns uses it for a crime. Because that happens every day. What about cigarettes? Wow, there's an amazingly dangerous product that is well-known to be deadly to anyone who smokes them for a long period of time. Should we make them illegal right now? Alcohol kills hundreds of thousands of people a year, from alcohol poisoning, from drunk driving, from people who go on a drunken rage and can't stop themselves. Should we ban alcohol? The USA tried it once and that was a huge failure.

What about the modern Copyright battles? Wow, lots of software is produced that is *PROVEN* to be used for mostly piracy *cough*Napster*cough* Slashdot defends these freedoms vigilantly. What about DeCSS? It VERY WELL could have been used for DVD piracy. And I bet it was. So hell, we better outlaw it.

CG porn harms absolutely no one in its creation, and there is little research that I've seen to back up the notion that any but a small minority of people who actually act on their pedophile urges. I'm 21, should I be put in the same class of people who rape and steal because I like to sexually fantasize about high-school aged girls? Our entire American culture believes that women are at their peak of sexual attractiveness between the ages of 15 and 25 or so, yet you want to make even the viewing of imaginary images of these young girls totally illegal because i MIGHT act out on my impulses?

Under those conditions, I do not want freedom of expression

    I pity your close-mindedness.

  14. Re:URLS and advertising on Fox Says Web Bugs = Virus Risk · · Score: 2

You're going to find that most people's problem with spam isn't the advertisement itself.. I would have no problem if a spam email actually LISTED the read address it came from, and a subject line that indicated it was an advertisement. Most spam used to be this way even a year or two ago. Now nearly every single piece of spam I get comes from a bogus email address, with a phony subject line trying to trick you into thinking it comes from someone you might know, and just reeks of being some kind of scam.

It also annoys me when I have to delete 50-100 spam messages a week, and hope that I don't delete anything important along with it. In the "old days" of advertising, getting your product out required some sort of cost to the advertiser. Now any idiot with an AOL account, a spam program, and a large list of email addresses can spew out junk messages non-stop, with virtually no cost to themselves, and at a high cost of annoyance to the receivers.

Of course, it seems like nearly half the time they haven't updated that recording yet, so I get a message saying everything is just fine, when they've been down for an hour and are getting flooded with angry callers wondering why their DSL doesn't work.
