One of my professors used the same argument for failing me once. Sure, he suggested that any rockets I'd build, with the goal of reaching Mars, more likely would end up on the moon.
I suggested that building a rocket that makes it all the way to the moon is a pretty neat trick regardless.
He was not impressed.
