I think you must be speaking to the man in the mirror. Go back and read through my entire set of posts on the subject - slowly and carefully. I don't think you got past the superficial stage yourself. And, if you happen to be less popular with management than I, you should probably get tested for sociopathic tendencies.
I rather like his remark about his age (I'm starting to feel his pain) on the page where he talks about how long he dodged Lester Del Rey's requests for a sequel and how long ago he came up with some of the central ideas for the Last Chronicles.
"I may not be as old as dirt, but dirt and I are starting to have an awful lot in common" I think I'll use it as my Slashdot.sig one of these years
Hmm, books to consider then, thanks. I also have never found a series that captivated like the Covenant Chronicles; Donaldson's use of unusual and archaic words and the way he formed them truly brought the Land and his Earth alive for me. In my more carefree years, I used to pick up one of the books in the 1st trilogy, drop it and start reading from where it opened. Many, many times, I would read to the end.
But, getting back to Kenaustin Ardenol, a couple years ago, I spotted an inconsistency between Fatal Revenant and White Gold Wielder which was also noticed by a longtime fan and which Donaldson admitted was a screwup on his part.
I created my Slashdot username in '99; at that time, the existence of the Insequent wasn't known and all that had been revealed about Kenaustin Ardenol was that he possessed or had acquired all skills and abilities to which the Haruchai aspire - that's what Ak-haru implies. In the One Tree, there was no mention of whether or not he was originally a Haruchai, or the origin of his name.
It wasn't the consumers who made the decision. We were buying stuff even when it cost much more than it does now. I remember when VCRs cost over $2000 in today's dollars. People still bought them ( just not one for each room of the house )
MANUFACTURED means MADE. This isn't a natural resource; if they can make it, so can we. The fact that you allowed yourself to become dependent on a sole source goes back to - wait for it - BAD PLANNING. Remember how AMD got into the x86 biz? No? Go look it up.
Japan has been known to disaster-prone for how long exactly? And you don't have reliable alternate streams for your critical components? Cry me a fucking river - I'll sing you a sad song.
Check out the Energy from Thorium site. It's not true that "no one has actually made a commercial level thorium cycle reactor despite decades of trying" . The fact is that a molten-salt reactor was in operation for over 5 years ( research, not commercial) but the entire thorium project was sunk because it does NOT produce (significant amounts?) of plutonium which was regarded as necessary for the US weapons program. So it might be more accurate to say that a commercial grade thorium reactor has not really been tried. Some experts think that India is off on the wrong foot because they've been attempting a solid-fuel thorium reactor. The thorium proponents staunchly believe that MSR / LFTR is the way to go.
The site has recently put up a PDF of a 1962 report to President Kennedy regarding civilian nuclear reactors.
Modern Americans, especially those who back the Republicans should probably be reminded of the debt owed to France. They seem to be a bit quick to mock the French as cowardly - Americans may want to try living under hostile occupation in the midst of a war before they start jeering those who have ( well, as least their parents and grandparents )
Save your vitriol for those who deserve it - the lying, cheating, stealing, self-serving assholes who do the deeds that Assange exposes. They are the real problem, he's mainly an annoyance. And, he's only at the end of the chain; it's other people who go to the trouble of actually stealing the documents.
I'd feel better about the US as a "trusted adult" if they hadn't done so much to put and keep the murderous bullies in power - they've been doing this for far too long and it has to stop. And Americans can be blindingly stupid - preaching personal freedom, democracy and capitalism and yet doing so much to enrich the Arabs, Chinese and OPEC. Not to mention bankrupting themselves in the process ( mostly through the failure of financial oversight but the current wars did play a big role )
After all the financial disasters dating back to the Savings & Loan crises, junk bonds, Black Tuesday, etc, let's say that I'm not hopeful unless STRONG oversight and regulation is put in place.
I don't think the bubble ever really went away; it just jumped to the next new, hot, sure thing. It'll only ever go away when people stop being stupid.
Nobody I knew paid separately for connectivity software back then - you chose an ISP and bought their package or your used one of the AOL floppies that came in the mail every week.
I ditched Zonealarm almost 10 years ago when it started spontaneously rebooting a Win2K machine of mine and while I initially like M$ Security Essentials, that forced Windows patching was a dealbreaker so back to AVG I went. I use VirtualBox but haven't hit the local network sharing - what version do you have? But I take your point - the software of the present makes the machines of the future as slow and frustrating as the ones of the past.

Yes, I have although I no longer own any of the books. Perhaps I'll pick them up again - Stephen has been one of my top 3 favorites since '78

Did you overlook the reference in inconsequential?
Which is fine, I suppose, until disaster strikes. Did the efficiency experts think that "Ring of Fire" is hyperbole?
I''m also known as Kenaustin Ardenol and am hardly InCONsequentIAL
I really should have done that myself. +1 Informative to you.

That's 58 Trillion, not billion

They're trying to compete with the religious thinkers, the greatest salesmen of all time.
The original quote was "Fighting for peace is like fucking for chastity" - it used to be one of my Slashdot .sigs.
Unfortunately, like many police departments, they abuse their powers far too often.

Crime that may be, but not committed by Wikileaks.

Well, it's nice to be able to redefine "best". It's worked for marketers for a very long time.
