If I understand how this process works, the sewage has to be treated, dewatered and processed into sludge which is then processed inefficiently into oil. Probably cheaper & much more efficient to turn it into biogas as is already being done in many places.
And have what are essentially slaves to dig up new ones.
Perhaps synthetic diamonds should be marketed as "cruelty-free diamonds". As far as synthetic vs. natural -- if it's made up of carbon atoms arranged in a face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice (to paraphrase Wikipedia), it's a fucking diamond. All the work of digging up "natural" stones, etc... doesn't make them better, just more expensive. Of course, I'm sure The Diamond Industry will disagree (and have me killed).:-)
The De Beers cartel has certainly put a lot of effort into controlling the diamond market so you may want to keep a low profile. The Atlantic magazine's excellent article from 1982 enlightened my younger self as to the utter scam that is the diamond industry http://www.theatlantic.com/mag...
You're wrong. "the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has found a way to potentially produce 30 million barrels of biocrude oil PER YEAR from the 34 billion gal (128 billion liters) of raw sewage that Americans create every day"
Problem here is this process is highly inefficient and would turn the entire ANNUAL "output" of American rectums into 1.5 days worth of oil consumption.
"One of my neighbors has his WiFi access point named after the local pro football team. I think a reasonable person would conclude he's a fan of that team. Same thing here."
No one who supports those murdering towelheads calls them Daesh and they've threatened to cut out the tongues of everyone they can get their hands on that calls them by that acronym
"kale shortages"? In California? That sounds like the onset of the Apocalypse. But I'm guessing quality solar panels can stand up to all that, except the old fogeys behind the wheel & the lack of kale. That said, I think the real important announcement Elon Musk made was about the improved PowerWall, not the suspiciously-lacking-in-details-solar-shingles.
Go have a look at the data, methods & conclusion of the Berkeley Earth project, that decided to redo the work of climate & temp data analysis and look at more data from further back than ANYONE has yet done. While their lead researcher had some harsh things to say about the methods of some studies, in the end the conclusions are the same. The Earth is warming, has been for over a hundred years and humans are largely responsible for the warming, especially in recent decades, volcanoes for any cooling and the impact of solar variation is negligible
I disagree. Atheism is an absence of belief in phenomena that have been shown to exist at all. Climate denialism is a refusal to acknowledge an increasing preponderance of facts based on an accumulating body of research.
We don't know the value of getting the Sunnis and Shia fighting again.
It could have been brilliant. Our grandchildren will be in a position to know, but likely won't care if it turns out well (towel heads keep fighting for a century or so).
For the 4 yrs before 9/11, the Federal deficit was running a SURPLUS of $100+ million annually. In 1999, the Federal debt was $5.5 trillion, population of 278 million so $19,780 per person. In 2006, when the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq were 5 yrs & 3 yrs respectively, it had grown to $28, 359 per person. It's now sitting a bit over $60k per person which is more than the household income of 55% of the population.
I think the grandkids will be too busy slaving away in their Indian & Chinese-run labor camps to give a rat's ass about what the towelheads are up to - and if they're fortunate enough to get any holidays, they'll spend them pissing on our graves.
"which will cost trillions of dollars for a net temperature reduction of 0.3C if fully implemented" America alone has spent trillions on things of far less importance than global warming. But I don't think the Paris agreement will reduce the rise, only hold it below 1.5C which is well above where we are now. We simply waited too long, despite decades of warnings
" It's a form of addiction" Climate Denial appears to be a religious obligation for many; and many Xtians who blithely overlook all the Bible's pesky warnings about greed.
For example, 1 Timothy 6:10
"For the love of money is the root of all evil; and while some have coveted after it, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many
sorrows" There may even be something in Two Corinthians that gives away the whole ballgame.
"Even the US government refuses to use or do anything with it out of fear and out-lash of some opensource lawyer" There are lots of people developing on Linux and if the Gubbermint is in fear of being taking down by RMS, they can just buy their Linux software from Redhat.

Very interesting. But a talent pool like that must be useful to someone. Maybe Google or Facebook - or Microsoft?
I see we have a student of The Prachett
Makes me wonder if some of the condemned were praising the Caesar or giving themselves a pep talk
"Ave Imperator, morituri te salutant"
"required a "common database" for communication"? In 1999? So Microsoft Access?

I also made an "its" instead of "it's" typo. Not my finest hour.
I worked in healthcare IT - it's not "limited choice", it's the same end-user laziness that keeps people on Windows.
GAH!!!! Another typo - "way PAST time" not "pas" time
missing question mark - sigh.
Slashdot, its way pas time for an edit feature.
Who'll buy the pieces Broadcom doesn't want

But how are those of less importance than global warming, which is completely normal (as is global cooling)?
Disease, starvation & death are also completely normal yet look at the effort we've put into avoiding those things.

Too much on the military; too much on healthcare for the outcomes; too much on oil & gas
