Yeah, but if the "dead passengers are bad for business" motif was true, we wouldn't have an NTSB and an FAA. And, car manufacturers like Toyota wouldn't be getting caught playing cost analysis games when their products are found to be defective.
Want to hear something interesting, try to get someone against ObamaCare to tell you specifically what they don't like about the bill. You'll hear a lot about socialism and a "government takeover," but that's about it.
They might get a "Guiliani pass." When he was elected mayor, crime rates had been dropping rapidly for about 2 years under the Dinkins? administration which had completely halted and reversed skyrocketing crime rates. You can find the stats out there on the internet and graph them yourself. This drop continued for a few more years and leveled out.
Right now, the bleeding has been stopped and the economy is slowly improving. I imagine the progress will continue unless the Republicans do something catastrophically stupid.
The new Republican power base in the House will get to test their new-found fiscal responsibility by not raising the debt ceiling some time next Spring or Summer. Rand Paul explicitly as well as other Republicans have run on staunchly refusing to add more to the debt. How they reconcile this with a $3 trillion tax cut is besides the point. I'll be interested to see if they stand up for their principles and do it, or figure out how hard things are in the adult world and raise the ceiling to stop us from defaulting on our loans for the first time in US history.
Enough with the subtle "it was because of poor people" arguments. The housing bubble was largely caused by *upper* class borrowers treating skyrocketing housing prices like another stock market. The Wall Street shysters knew what they were setting up. I'd say Alan Greenspan was one of them. You'll notice that interest rates drop sharply in the naughts, and rise at almost the same rate. I saw a graph (too lazy to find it) in I think the Washington Post where the rates over time looked like a shallow 'V'. Get people hooked on those volatile loans, then set up the collapse for your buddies.
Classic example. The Dems had 60% of the Senate (counting the Indies). The stimulus bill included about 40% of the tax cuts that Republicans wanted. They wanted a 50/50 solution with 40% of the vote and still voted it down. A stronger Senate leader would have stripped all of their provisions out when they indicated they weren't voting for ti anyway.
Oh please. Every Democratic President or candidate is the "most liberal" in the Conservative soundbox. Obama is more Centrist than even Clinton or Hillary.
We have a growing crowd of (probably astroturfing) Google-fellating fan boys. You can't even criticize Google without your comments getting trolled into oblivion.
And, it was no surprise about that corporate personhood vote. John Roberts made his living arguing corporate personhood cases in front of the Supremes. He gets the Chief Justice seat, and a few years later the right case comes along for him to enshrine his world view. Way too coincidental IMO, but I'm admittedly way too conspiracy-prone.
Except, stupid people are also citizens whose vote reflects a portion (however large or small) of the Commons. If your town is 25% stupid and stupid people for whatever reason want to repaint cop cars green, you have to acknowledge that desire in the election base. Either show why it's a bad idea or implement it. And, above average intelligence isn't required to form valid opinions on some topics.
Not the same. Exit polls ask what people actually did, not what they were thinking about doing. Exit polls are way more accurate which is why the 2004 results raised so many eyebrows.
I assume you're trying to tell us all how private industry could do it better, faster, and cheaper? If they could have, they would have. I know that on Planet Libertaria governments just waste your tax money, but you're going to have to accept the fact that governments do a lot of things better. Most notably, taking the one for the team when it comes to loss-leader research.
It's the cross-pollination of data that concerns me the most. You don't know where one link of your Facebook account will turn up. This is a Google example, but I HAD a YouTube account and after Google bought them out I got a prompt to share my Google login info, which I did. So, now the YouTube account that allowed me to semi-anonymously comment on videos, pick favorites, and rate those I liked is rolled into my Google "screw your privacy" profile. A few weeks ago, I log in to see that somehow Google had scanned my email folder for people I had email contacts with and displayed their YouTube videos under a "people your probably know" panel. One of these was a casual inquiry on an item I had for sale on Facebook! So, one careless link I made from one account to another had now opened up quite a bit of my personal life to any yahoo out there who I've exchange email with. Needless to say, I deleted that YouTube account and if I didn't have an Android phone I'd be deleting my Gmail account too.
I noticed the Beetles reference. I've read (on the interwebz so don't quote me) that it's supposed to be a reference to the Christian parable of the Walrus and the Carpenter. John Lennon claims he got the two parties confused and meant to be the carpenter. You decide;)
We did a pretty damned good job paying for our entitlements and elevating those "poor people" into the middle class before we became a corporatocracy.

Interesting stuff indeed. It's probably a good thing that NASA is demanding certainty from it's engineers before clearing Discovery for launch.
And part of the reason I don't trust private sector space exploration at this stage of space exploration..
Virus has +5 saving throw versus eggheaded do-gooder scientists.
Sorry for your loss yesterday, Mrs. Fiorina.

Does anyone remember history more than 3 months back anymore? The collapse started in 2007 and really blew up in 2008.

Funny how any negative comments about Google get you trolled off the the page...
It's like the George Foreman grill; except it cuts the internet anonymity.

At least, fake livers won't be in highest demand from *this* crowd.
Yes, but you're never going to get one to hit your taste buds.
Because ONE astronaut with a pick and shovel is worth more than the 100 probes you could send there.

We had a space station back in the 70s before Mir.
