There's guerilla warfare and assymmetrical tactics...and then there's militias vs. standing armies.I'll agree that militias aren't completely useless but there are too many nations with dedicated military budgets to rely on "a rifle in every cabinet" today. Maybe that would work for two small nations at war or a rebellion in a small nation.

What? Militias aren't some Libertarian fantasy force. Militias are what countries with limited resources used in lieu of a standing military. They're also all but obsolete in a world where military technology has advanced to the point that private citizens can't be expected to field their own effective arms (at least no one I know owns a Javelin "just in case...".

And, really, "arms" applies to a whole range of weapons. It means I can have a suitcase nuke camp out under a flight path with a Stinger on my roof, or whizz around the airport with a fully loaded Russian surplus MiG.

Of course the "originalist" Scalia should know this and agree with gun rights limitations (snark).

Sounds great, but it's pretty damned naive. Every government needs to influence behavior of it's citizens and a great way to do that is with tax incentives. But, you can't just hand them out like candy. Those incentives have to be strictly defined to keep the 10% of us who will exploit the system in check.

Yes, there's a lot of BS tax handouts to businesses, but there are also a lot more handouts that encourage behavior beneficial to the common good.

The only problem I've had was a couple years ago when I'd forgotten about several deductions and had to amend my return by mail (amounted to several hundred dollars as I recall).

My only complaint is that e-filing should be free software provided by the government and not commercial entities. Seems like that's the prerogative of the Feds, but those under a certain income bracket do get free filing and software.

Lets deal with the challenges of setting up shop somewhere slightly more remote before building a Pluto base (kidding). It's far more feasible to pull off and would probably lead to permanent settlements. As it is, going to Mars would equate to the "pride rides" the Apollo shots were.
