"I guess they don't realize that the move to mobile was as fragile as the "move" to netbooks, which of course collapsed."
Netbooks were murdered by their imposed hardware and RAM limitations designed to keep them from competing with other platforms. The netbook baby was knifed by design.
>GNOME seems to want to remove any feature in Linux that makes Linux better than Windows.
Fine. Help "remove" their fucking user base.:-)
Slashdotters have a lot of influence on new Linux users, so slam GNOME and discourage adoption in any way you can. GNOME will not be fixed, GNOME leadership don't give a fuck about you, me, or anyone not them, so help dry up the user base and guide new users to friendly distros which use a DE you like.
Reward the good, shun the bad, spread the word to reinforce the good.
Why? Their stupidity creates opportunities and incentives for other people to do things better. One beauty of Free and Open software is the ability to more easily route around damage.
Once one is familiar enough with using Linux, it doesn't matter very much when you switch DEs, and many folks have a variety installed on the same machine!
I put Puppy Linux on such machines and it works well. Similar in speed to XP (and doesn't get slower over time). Lubuntu is a bit slow for such work but it does run.
My friends who just want webmail/Facebook/etc use it to browse with no problem. For the really challenged you can delete most of the desktop shortcuts and rename what you keep to what they do. I tuck a copy of the live CD inside the case of their desktops just in case.
If you don't want your data inspected, never send it over the internet. Not "try to find a safe way to send it over the internet", but NEVER send it over the internet.
Air-gap every system which sees your data. Disable networking at the hardware level. Store the data where it cannot easily be found. MicroSD cards are cheap enough.
That's when it's time to lie, lie, and lie again because getting what you want is what matters, not humoring anonymous shitbags on the internet.
For example, make up some psych excuse about a family member needing a very quiet neighborhood because they are under treatment for agoraphobia. Look for crime reports, and ask on forums where people won't defend toxic areas because the forum members don't give a shit about PC.
Don't be shy about where you look for info. If I wanted a quiet neighborhood, I would have no compunction about asking on the Stormfront forums! My security and my comfort and my property values are what matter to me.
It's every man or woman for themselves, and if you land in some shithole because you were lied to no one who lied to you will be there to help. While White Flight was an economic disaster for the Detroit tax base, it was pure unadulterated flawless win for the people who Got The Fuck Out as fast as they could. None of them could have changed anything by staying.
"We try to isolate ourselves from anything that could negatively impact our standard of living, thereby reinforcing the things that could cause it in the first place."
Explain how I reinforce bad areas by not commuting through them and avoiding them at night? My presence has no power to change them, and if I bother to get a CC permit just to visit areas where it is personally negligent for me to go, that would look even worse if I had to defend myself!
I'm in college and the folks who live near toxic areas are not shy at all about warning others to "stay the fuck out". There are other areas of low income where you aren't at much risk of getting mugged. It's thoughtful to warn others to avoid them.
The hypocritical ACLU position reflects their desire for control of a Federalis government to impose their will on all Americans.
That worked with the Civil Rights Act etc, but the ACLU swallowed the bait and as regard the Second Amendment is counter-revolutionary just as the NRA is often counter-revolutionary by its acceptance of every other status qou not Second Amendment related!
"everyone in this nation, armed or not is a heartbeat away from a smart bomb at their breakfast table,"
There aren't nor will there ever be nearly enough smart bombs and there are very few aircraft to deliver them. Those aircraft have to get off the ground and land without getting plinked. Aircraft are actually quite tender and delicate (A-10 excepted).
Anyone with military experience, or who is awake, knows that the relatively tiny government forces (including the military, which would be split in a revolt) are dispersed and not sufficient to occupy the US. Iraq is tiny by comparison and keeping a lid on it was tough enough.
We need more "liberals" to arm themselves.
The refusal to own tools of power is just as much acceptance of the status quo as is the sheeplike support of the government by many firearms owners. If you won't kill for your freedom when necessary you deserve to be a slave because you volunteered by submission. Pacifism is weakness against Serious People, because they give no fuck about your childish moral example. (Ghandi worked against the effeminate British, but a serious opponent would simply have murdered him in prison.)
BTW as an NRA member, I WANT the NRA and gun industry to cooperate. It's a match made in heaven, and I support vendors who donate a percentage of profit to the NRA.
Pinochet actually rescued his country from Stalinism, and the body count was trivial. Nice methods only work on nice people, and lest we forget the Stalinists and Maoists of the Cold War were a hardcore bunch. The way to stop them was to find and kill them. Murdering Communists outright was a perfectly reasonable way to stop them. Stalinism/Maoism clearly merits extermination where practical and mercy merely allows them to survive and regroup. They can't regroup if they are dead.
The casualties Pinochet inflicted were trivial, and they weren't of Taliban kind and quality. Of course, if you hate (side X) all torture equals all other torture, and all war equals all other war so must be compared to it for propaganda purposes.
"The mail apps now make it almost impossible to delete email in any other way but one at a time. Good usable interfaces are being carefully and methodically destroyed."
That's why I use Thunderbird to read my various webmail accounts. I don't have to see their shit, and I have local copies if they lose theirs. (If you have Thunderbird Portable, just burn a copy of the program folder to DVD and your messages can't be wiped accident.)
The lack of jobs for unskilled laborers will discourage illegal immigration. Americans don't want those jobs, or we wouldn't have vast numbers of openings for illegals!
Dry up the jobs, remove the attraction to immigrate.
We have infinite time to explore space, we need perfected robots to interact with the utterly and permanently hostile space environment, and we need robots to serve us on Earth.
Scrap all these silly manned programs for a few hundred years and instead of slow-development-cycle meat tourist carriers, build and deploy rapid-development-cycle machines so we can learn about and explore space much more efficiently.
The manned space program was a Cold War dickwaving contest, that is all. When robots can do everything man needs done in space, our successors can move into turnkey facilities.
and commit suicide.
Yes, really. That's the only way to atone for that level of disgrace.
Christianity obligates the US into a suicide pact with Israel. Christian (j)ihad requires it.
There is nothing to be done about that, but at least most of the casualties are Superstitionist so not much of value is lost.

I rather like getting free scanners and printers when their manufacturer doesn't produce updated Windows drivers. :-)
Companies are expendable constructs, so they are often expended. They exist to turn a profit for those who control them.
Note I didn't say "invest in them" though those may overlap. :-)

"why do people even try to submit shit articles with bad questions? "
Because the old Slashdot is deader than a pickled herring.
In Linux, fragmentation is robust diversity. You aren't compelled to use the fragments, which is why I ignore the whiners.
Use what works for you and you can get by just fine ignoring the rest.
Unlike abandoned proprietary "fragments", you can help revive those you like. Or not.
Why anyone working on critical software would bother reusing (rather than copying) old hard drives is a mystery to me.
They are cheap enough to throw away, even at a grand a pop for the 400GB Intels.

Kill yourself for not knowing that modern airships use helium or even bothering to check. That's basic historic and aviation knowledge.
Slashdot is at least theoretically a tech site.
Simple. Concentrated ridership and dense urban areas.

And to put in Palinese:
"How's that hopey Cloudy thing looking NOW?"
"I advocate a full Nuclear Strike; It makes as much sense as everything else."
Even if DC were obliterated the deceased politicians would be promptly replaced.
People who wanted secure comms didn't fucking use the Internet.
There are many other ways to communicate. Not all communication is electronic, and not all data need be moved over networks.
The desire to use the internet is just gifting those who control the internet with information.
