[disclaimer: I'm a Drupal contributor] Drupal is a CMS which doesn't use the OO features of PHP, but has nonetheless an OO design: for example all content is a "node", and you can "subclass" a node getting a story, an image, a forum topic etc. It uses hooks so it can be expanded easily; it has both themes a-la *nuke and templates. Of course it has a good user management system. The core is maintained by few people (not me) in a very strict, almost maniacal;) cleanliness. It's fast and powers sites like Kerneltrap which sometimes is on/. home and withstands the load. I use Drupal to power different sites, from personal blogs to corporate intranets, and plan to use it as a base for other completely different projects. It also has a very active community. Of course it has its own faults and deficiencies, but we are working to fix them. Here is a recent review of Drupal.
A company called Fastweb wired most of Milan with fiber optic. I have a 10 Mb/sec connection at home, with unlimited calls to phone in Italy (no cell phones) at 85 euro/month. Without unlimited calls (just connection) it's 67 euro/month.
I also have it in my office too, though it costs more.
These are very competitive prices in Italy, but other companies offer just at most a 640K/sec ADSL.
And it's fast: it's full 10 Mb/sec in the MAN, and there is a p2p network with 1000s of hosts in which a full movie is downloaded in about 15-20 minutes.
In the rest of the Internet the connection is very fast, even if much less than the MAN. I generally download at 200K/sec from a decent server.
Almost everybody I know who uses Internet and can (some areas are not wired) has Fastweb.
There are some drawbacks: some problems with mail servers, no public nor static ip and other things. But you forget anything when you look at the speed of the connection:)
The antivirus saved me quite a few times, but the firewall is not so great (lacks configuration).
But I had a lot of problems: I had troubles registering, their shop really sucks and I had to download different version of their registering software, after lots of mails with their support center. It took me a month to have a working version!! And a few days ago my subscription was over, well before the year I bought... but their support service wrote me that it was their fault and they will update my subscription period in a few days.
So: buy just the antivirus, it's great and doesn't bog your pc, but don't buy it online!
Another idea: burn a bootable cd with Linux, a movie player and a movie; you insert the cd and the movie starts. Best would be a player which supports psx hardware
Perhaps less scientific, but it looks cooler: An Atlas of the Universe
