A fairly simple attack against encrypted systems is to infect the small unencrypted bootloader and kernel (which are almost always stored on the same drive in an unencrypted partition) and put a backdoor into that. You could even clone the drive, then put in a backdoor which would save the encryption key (when he booted next time) and send it to you over cover channels.

I'll wait until Netflix supports HTML 5, which should be fairly soon!

They already do, but it requires a DRM module that doesn't work in Linux. Ironically, Linux users are pretty much the only ones still using the Silverlight plugin, all of the other platforms have switched to the HTML5 interface already.

Pipelight is a LOT more than a binary blob DRM module. It is an entire instance of Silverlight running in Wine. My laptop hits 100 celcius with the fan at FULL speed watching Netflix. I can do full 3D gaming and it only hits about 70 or 80.

And others would call it "It's cost you an extra $5 million to add a reverse". It's not just that the machine can't move backwards, it's that it installs walls behind itself that have a smaller inside diameter than the cutting head. Even if it could move backwards, it would only be able to move as far as the previous wall section (probably 8 feet at most). To go further back you either need to remove all the walls (and almost assuredly collapse the tunnel), or remove/shrink the solid steel cutting head.

As another proud Canadian who knows people in the Hospital system and has taken advantage of emergency surgery, one legitimate complaint about our system is that cronic, non-life-threatening problems tend to end up at the bottom of the waiting list. I know someone in that situation (back problems to the point of not being able to leave the house) and they have to wait 6 months just to get x-rays.

This is mostly caused by a lack of facilities and personel, so it basically just means that instead of the poor getting the short stick, the cronic get it instead. But still for free!

  13. Re:why? on Embedded SIM Design Means No More Swapping Cards · · Score: 1

This is actually what I was thinking. Have the phone store as many SIM's as you need with a software tool to switch between them. When signing up for a new provider, they could have you touch an NFC terminal or scan a QR code to save a new SIM into your phone.

The problem with this is that it becomes complicated if you want to do the equivalent of using a sim card in multiple phones. I'm not sure what the network would do (in technical terms) if 2 devices tried to use the same SIM identifier at the same time. If they don't let you store the same SIM in multiple devices, it would be more difficult to switch to a new device because you would need to put all the SIM's into the new phone (which with QR's could potentially be done through the provider's website).

Only if they update from the default mirror. There are thousands of mirrors for each distro ranging from universities to ISP's and non-profit organizations. Good luck blocking those.

What you *may* have luck with is providing a local mirror for the major distros (say Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint), then advertise it to the students with the incentive that being a local mirror it will be WAY faster. Blocking people only makes them more determined, give them a better solution and they may just solve the problem for you.

Exactly. Basically steam is releasing a console, and also releasing the operating system for it so you can basically build your own console. Think about it, no more need to send back entire consoles due to a bad HDD, badly designed hardware can be replaced with BETTER hardware, you can use any kind of case you want (custom style with lights and stuff), and so much more.

I would use it in a dual-boot or VM configuration. It would be nice to have a free locked-down gaming OS that doesn't have umpteen crapware processes eating up resources in the background, billions of security holes due to unneeded directory sharing bullshit and just be dedicated to making your games work absolutely flawlessly at optimal performance. Of course I would not want it as the only, or even primary OS on my computer, but I would definitely consider setting it up as dual-boot.

Think of it as a way to temporarily turn your computer into a game console!
