  1. Engineer vs Architect vs Developer on Should Programmers Be Called Engineers? (theatlantic.com) · · Score: 1

I agree that the term "Engineer" is used too loosely.
When I advanced in my responsibilities from merely writing code to designing the structure of applications, my title became Application Architect. "Engineer" is commonly used to describe people who design and implement deployment strategies, as DevOps Engineer - I think that is appropriate, because they are not typically involved in developing applications or application architecture. DevOps Engineers need to think like "engineers" to create a sound and efficient process, with deep knowledge of the tools and platforms involved. There is a direct functional line from "catapult" engineers to "software delivery" engineers. - they both throw shit at stuff ;)
As a consultant, my actual title is not very precise describing my duties: Senior Developer, Application Architect, Software Engineer, Drupal Specialist are used interchangeably - I am typically responsible for architecting solutions, developing applications with code, and evaluating and improving deployment processes. When I was asked to explain my work in lay terms, I said, "I build logical machines that achieve business goals" - although my machines are mostly virtual, they need to be optimally engineered just like physical machines.
In larger teams, there is more specialization, and I am comfortable delegating deployment to DevOps Engineers. I have observed that some DevOps Engineers don't give a damn about the end user experience; usually their decisions do not impact the UI/UX of an application, but sometimes they do, then I may have to communicate a concern.

10 years after graduation, having paid my loan payments dutifully, I became so sick with Bipolar depression I could not work. My psychiatrist signed forms excusing me from future payments, stating that it was unlikely that I would ever be able to work again. Fortunately he was wrong, my symptoms improved after a few years. I feel no guilt, it was accurate at the time, and I have repaid society in other ways since then.

or a technology that transfers knowledge directly, different types of people will need to learn subjects at different depths differently. PowerPoint is a tool used by a certain sector of publishers to communicate with another specific sector, at a high level with low detail. When I joined a client, the Project Manager showed me a PP to give me a high-level understanding of the business requirements. That was the only the first step. Then I read a detailed Technical Requirements doc, and produced a Technical Specifications doc to translate the requirements into solutions. Some people open bottles with their teeth, but we have better tools for that job.

When I was shopping for a new laptop as my development machine last year, I bought an Apple MacBook Pro because it was about the same price as high-end PCs. Then I installed Ubuntu with rEFInd. I rarely use the OSX boot. It's made well, and dang it, everywhere I go all the kool kidz have Macs, but few of them are running Linux. My last two laptops were HPs that fell apart, they looked like they were in a demolition derby.

  5. don't assume that aliens are biological on Ask Slashdot: How Could We Actually Detect an Alien Invasion From Outer Space? · · Score: 1

Scientists and Philosophers at SETI believe that an alien race sufficiently advanced to visit our solar system would have evolved beyond biological life, becoming cyborg or truly artificial life. It's a logical progression from computing to AI to re-engineering their own life forms, and we are likely headed that way if we survive. I blogged about it, as evidence for my own assertion that Web 3.0 will involve a direct neural connection to the internet, a first step in melding human and artificial intelligence. Philosopher Susan Schneider has proposed that any alien race we are likely to counter are probably BISAs: Biologically-Inspired Superintelligent Agents. One reason SETI has not produced results is because we have been looking for biological life and consciousness. And what would any sane and advanced alien civilization want with our messy biological self-destructive race, and our ruined planet, anyway? I think they stay the hell away from us, like we have Ebola. I have also considered that UFOs may be time travelers, perhaps from our own future?

But not in a hostile Terminator scenario. More like it is a possible convergence of human evolution and technology, to replace our biological minds and bodies with technological ones. I wrote a blog post about it today, supporting my contention that "Web 3.0" will involve a direct neural connection of the brain to the Internet, without tactile devices like mouse and keyboard. http://netsperience.org/conten...

Are we going to disrupt global ecology further for tourism and industry?
    1. Beach erosion is a natural effect from rising sea levels. We can only interrupt this process for a limited time, until sea levels make it impossible to replenish the sand. And what are the ecological consequences of interfering with this porcess?
    2. Exporting large amounts of sand from one place to another disrupts the ecology of the location being mined. It can interfere with the way water and light are handled by the landscape. Certainly it has an impact on the local flora and fauna.
    3. If Silicon Valley needs more sand, let them get it from the moon. Don't further damage our global ecology for industry.

  15. Drupal Content Management Framework on Ask Slashdot: One Framework To Rule Them All? · · Score: 1

I am building more and more web applications with Drupal. Its ease of integration with web services, and the project's progressive strategy to fully support HTML5 and mobile-first, make Drupal a versatile tool to build applications managing content, community, social media, and with the maturation of the Ubercart/Drupal Commerce project, ecommerce.

Drupal is definitely not a "lean" framework, and it has a steep learning curve; fortunately I identified Drupal as a good horse 6 years ago when the ground-breaking Drupal 4.7 was about to be released.

A look at who is using Drupal - Publishing, Media, Entertainment, Government, Education, Ecommerce, Arts - confirms that it is a framework chosen for complex Enterprise web applications: http://buytaert.net/tag/drupal-sites
