If the rest of you had to make a living off royality per sale or use of your work instead of getting paid a salary or hourly you'd change your mind real quick.

You've probably never seen a record contract. Artists generally get a fixed amount, and what they get from actual record sales is small.

And really, living off of royalties isn't much different from living off tips. Except generally the servers try to please their customers to earn them. Since, lets face it, the record companies are the ones getting the majority of our 'tips', they aren't doing much to earn them by pouring salt in our coffee.

I tried to take that wise advice but the article appears to be slashdotted (odd that).

On a related note my motherboard has an ALi M1647 chipset, the AGP features of which NVIDIA disables by default. You can imagine how much use I've gotten out of such a stable system (read: none) It might be a blessing if my PSU decided to consume the rest of the system in a ball of flame.

  7. Arcade games on The Future of Game Dev (Except in St. Louis) · · Score: 1

Arcade games also have the problem that their goal tends to be to get the player to drop in as much cash as possible in the shortest time possible.

You don't often see a PC/Console racing game that doesn't let you finish a race if you don't hit all the checkpoints in a predetermined time. (With the exception of, say, Burnout and a few others.)

Console developers have a lot more freedom with what they can write, because they can assume there are no line-ups to deal with.

This historically has had an interesting effect: It's not really an issue!

Unfortunately it's probably more due to SLOW ADMINISTRATION rather than being a wise adminstrative choice.

  14. Re:Ownership on Fan Fiction Explained · · Score: 1

I have to partially correct myself, the main reason cities cannot be copyrighted is because they are not linked to anything necessarily, as there can be more than one (as I mentioned) The point is, I could even use the name "Fox Mulder" as long as I'm not writing about "Fox Mulder, an FBI agent who investigates the paranormal with his partner Dana Scully....etc etc."

  15. Re:Ownership on Fan Fiction Explained · · Score: 1

The original example used of "Springfield" is a prime example of why this is true. The producers of "The Simpsons" chose to call their city Springfield because there are at least 3 cities of this name in the US. Obviously they can't sue the _real_ cities for using their fictitious names, therefore a you cannot hold a copyright on a fictional place.
