"To get the craft to Titan, it would need to be stowed in a small entry vehicle with a heat shield. As this enters the atmosphere, a parachute will extract the helicopter from the heat shield and the rotors will spring into action.
Now comes one of the mission's greatest challenges: how do you control this helicopter in flight? It takes over an hour for radio signals from Earth to reach Titan, so the craft will have to fly itself. NASA engineers are already working on smart software to control space probes and spot signs of life..."
And the rotors spring into action! I wonder if that is before or *after* it crashes into an ethane lake and loses contact with NASA?
And, the smart software to control space probes and spot signs of life! That's rich. While we're at it lets write some software to create world peace and feed the masses!
Remember this story... because you'll probably be reading about it again in a few years:
Sure, the court will rule against Napster and everyone will just say "Hey this is wrong... let's stop trading MP3s and go back to buying CD's instead". Yeah... some law is going to change 20 million people's attitude overnight.
And even if they COMPLETELY stamp out MP3's in the United States, I guess I can head on over to China and Russia to pick up my free music.
This guy is doing the same thing that the Tabloids are doing over at stopnapster.com. Nothing new or original about it. I'm not sure if this guy is in a band, or just a disgruntled musician trying to get a record deal by siding with the RIAA. I guess if you give people something cool, and free - the backlash is inevitable. Jeesh what's the problem? If you don't like free music - don't download it! Some people just aren't content unless they are screwing things up for everyone else. The old "if I can't have it.. noone can" mentality.
It is only a matter of time before "MP3 clubs" start to spring up. Some sort of members-only club where all the people who are sharing are trusted members who have agreed not to 'spam' the MP3s with garbage or advertisements. Similar to the Usenet 'alt.binary' groups that have banned together to create the 'alt.binary.no-spam.groups' where the members actively enforce the rules and ban, or flame members who submit spam. (Not that I hang out there or anything!;)
No matter what happens, or what laws get passed, or what you put inside of an MP3.. trading WILL continue. And, it will most likely grow. I will continue to rip and trade my music with other people who are as passionate about this as me. Sure, there's always going to be the occasional idiot, or spammer but I don't think that they are going to be able to sabotage the whole MP3 trading Net with a few "bombs" or ads.
I would be much more likely to donate to the cause if they took credit cards online. Can't they appeal to some large, greedy oil company looking to do community service by donating a server, SSL, and a Merchant Account (say maybe someone who could symphathize... like maybe Exxon??)
I was thinking - yeah I might chip in some cash for this - I like penguins, hate oil slicks - what the hell?
Oh... but you got to fax your credit card number or send them a *snail mail* with your info... sorry but you lost me there. Make it easy to donate online and maybe more people would give.

We should start an international "Spammer Hall of Shame" to police this sort of thing. Rodana can be the first picture hanging on the wall. Just like there is a group of enforcers on Gnutella who publically humiliate people searching for kiddie-porn - we should embarass spammers publically.
Not just cancel their accounts and black-list them (which we already do). But, we should post pictures of them making asses of themselves (like the picture of Rodana flashing her tits). The police have started using this technique to cut down on prostitution in some cities. They set up a sting operation and post the pictures publically of all the dudes who get busted trolling for hookers. This is a MAJOR embarrasment!
There is something to be said for public shame as a punishment. What ever happened to it? They used to use the stocks to punish people. It really didn't hurt you physically - but you stood in the town center all day and got laughed at and publically humiliated for your crimes. We need to weed these sub-human spammers out and publically embarass them and show them that spamming is a despicable practice that will NOT be tolerated!
I wrote to the author of the Dialectizer and suggested that he could use my URL as a demo and offered an idea whereby he could maintain a list of "acceptable sites" where the owner has given permission to Dialectize their content. Here is his reply to me (my words in italics):
>I think it is sick how corporate America is >snatching the rights to everything and >everyone. You can't even have fun anymore >without some lawyer somewhere getting bent out of shape!
"To be fair, the lawyer was actually pretty nice (I talked to him on the phone),but he had to do what his clients asked him to. But your point is well taken. I feel the same way you do. Big corporations have an awful lot of power, which, in itself, isn't necessarily a bad thing, but combined with a culture in which the courtroom is looked upon as the first, not last, line of defense, it's a nasty mix for ordinary guys like you and me. I have little doubt that I'm right and no doubt that I'd lose a lawsuit, were one to be filed.
I thought of your idea of allowing the Dialectizer to hit sanctioned web sites, but you point out the problem yourself. It would take several hundred thousand sanctioned web sites before it would make much of a difference, and by then the script would be nasty on the server, as several hundred thousand pattern matches would have to be done per request.
At the very least, though, I guess you can copy and paste text from other web pages into the "Dialectize Text" box.
In order to submit a counter-notification, you must certify, under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief that you were disabled as a result of Metallica's mistake or misidentification of files you shared as infringing. Your account will remain blocked unless and until you submit a sworn statement of all the information contained in the "counter notification" form found below. That form must include your full real name, address, Napster username, and your consent to being sued by Metallica in the federal court where you reside.
This was on the Napster ban page. We want your name, rank, serial number... oh yeah... one other minor little thing... you have to consent to let Metallica sue you to (if it's not too much trouble or anything.)
Yeah right!
Selloutica is just trying WAY TOO HARD! What a bunch of over-the-hill, wannabe Lusers.
I'll start setting something up. It looks like quite a few people would really be interested in this. And for those that want Metallica, we'll just send them over to "paylars.com" instead...
A Japanese friend of mine translated the Wakamatsu site that is selling the kits. It seems that they are back-ordered now and won't have any for at least a month.
Good news - they take Visa and Mastercard, bad news - there is no mention about shipping outside of Japan anywhere on their site. They list shipping costs for delivery inside Japan, but unless you speak Japanese and ask REALLY nicely (not to mention pay through the nose for shipping) you aren't going to be able to order the kit any time soon.
I think one major problem is that the RIAA and record companies feel that you do not own anything. If you buy the CD according to the RIAA, you are not allowed to make copies, you can't loan it to your friends, all you are allowed to do is sit and listen to it on your "RIAA Approved" stereo system and shut-up and be happy.
I don't buy this lie! I bought the disk and if I want to have a copy at work, a copy at home, and a copy in the car - it's my right to! Buy forking out the $17 to own the CD.. I was not buying a piece of cheap plastic, I was buying the rights to own the music for personal use. Granted, I can't start selling shrink-wrapped copies of it - but I can make multiple copies for my own personal use to listen to where I want to.
The RIAA is shitting themselves trying to stop MP3. They know that they have already lost the war, but they are trying to pick up some cash in the few remaining battles by suing everyone involved with MP3's. But, in the long run, they will lose. It is quite simple really:
Digital data and distribution will never work with the existing model of copyright.
Copyright was originally intended to protect publishers. But, now it is being used to hurt consumers. Companies are weilding the DMCA like a sword in the fight to have the best of all worlds. In the end, the only one who loses in the consumer.
You can't map a legal structure like law and copyright onto a free and open architecture like the Internet - it just doesn't work.
I can't wait until protocols like "FreeNet" and OpenNap takes over! Then, groups like the MPAA and the RIAA can blow me !!!!
Same here... I got the original message but none of the extra bullshit that the article refers to. This happened to me at work once. I was on an Amazon list for publishers. They too left the list open and thousands of brain-dead morons started posting "Remove me from the list" to the list and it just got worse from there. In the end I think I had like 3,200 emails or so. I called Amazon the next day and spoke to someone in their catalog dept. who assured me that the guilty person had been "dealt with"... yeah right.
"Don't do it again... or else!"
It truely is frightening that business is now in charge of the Net. They can make decisions and pay the bills, but when it comes to setting up a mailing list, or running a forum... they are complete fucking morons.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone were to go around the Web and sign them up for a few hundred MLM newslists, and porno-pics-in-your-mailbox sites?
