  6. US Deserves more representation on ICANN Board Election Results · · Score: 1

I think that it is good that more countries are getting involved in the Web. After all it is a global network. However, I feel that ICANN representation should be based on the number of Internet users in that country.

If the United States is under-represented, then other countries will be making the decisions for us. For example if the US has 56 Million Internet Users and 60% of them shop online. Would it be fair for a country like Uganda which may have 60,000 Internet Users (None who shop online) to make laws governing E-commerce or gTLD's ??

    I think not!

This system is about fairness and representation. It is good that the US is finally giving some control back to the other countries of the world. But, the United States has more Intenet Users and therefore deserves a louder voice in representation.

If the numbers change 10 years from now. Then, so should the representation percentage. For example if the European Union in 10 years has 56 Million Users and the United States has 20 Million, then the EU should have greater representation.

This should not be an ego-driven, or jealousy-driven process. It's not one country saying "We're better than you".. it's simply a matter of Mathematics:

More users = more representation (regardless of national origin) Plain and simple.

  7. Throwing Pearls to the Pigs... on African Optical Backbone "Ring of Fire" · · Score: 1

I agree with some of these other posts. Africa as is full of backward, politically corrupt nations. Bribery of public officials is the norm (this includes police and politicians). So, this $1.2 Billion dollar project which will be completed in 2002 is an incredible waste of money!

How will the continent's 70% majority of mostly rural, poor people benefit from this? These people don't have food, medicine, or decent living conditions. Is high speed Net access going to improve their quality of life? Granted, it will improve education which will have positive long-term benefits. But, here and now in 2000 and in 2002 -- what good is surfing the web on a T1 if you're malnourished and dying of AIDS ???

One thing that seemed strange - the article said: The cable is long enough to circle the globe. Last I checked, this was 24,000 miles. Africa is 4,970 miles long and 4,600 miles wide. Is this going to be a double-cable? Why the extra length?

I'm just pissed. I live in a suburb of Boston and I can't even get a freakin cable modem. And now some guy in a grass hut who can't afford a computer is getting 40 Mbit access. IT'S NOT FAIR!

Here are the three types they list:

    1. Simple piracy - is the unauthorised duplication of an original recording for commercial gain without the consent of the rights
      owner.

    2. Counterfeits - are copied and packaged to resemble the original as closely as possible.

    3. Bootlegs - these are the unauthorised recordings of live or broadcast performances.

We exist as two cultures: Those who have NEVER had to deal with walls of any kind, and those who never knew anything BUT walls. To shift everyone over to the new paradym will take time. Some of us get it - lots of others just don't understand.

But, in another 30 -40 years... they'll all be dead! (like our good 'ol friend Gene Siskel...) Then, we can get on with the real work at hand - redesigning the world anew. The walls will come down.

  15. $100,000,000 ++ PER YEAR !!!!!! on Virgina Criminalizes spam, ACLU against it · · Score: 1

The Cumulative Cost I keep saying spam is theft; how much does it actually cost? Let's be very conservative. If a single spam message takes only five seconds for a recipient to deal with, and it goes to 10,000,000 people (which is the size of list many spammers claim to have), we're talking around 14,000 person-hours of wasted time. Suppose you've got part-time student help dealing with it at $5/hour: that's $70,000 wasted by one spam message. And many of us charge more than that for our time.

I know I see at least five spams a day, so the total cost of spam would be at least $350,000 a day. Supposing spammers were tasteful enough to only spam on weekdays (ha!), that would come to $87,500,000 in wasted time per year.

Others tell me it takes at least ten seconds to deal with each spam, and they see twelve or even fifty spam messages a day, so the real cost in wasted time could easily be an order of magnitude more than that. We know of one computer vendor who has had an engineer doing nothing but fighting spam for the last six months. That's at minimum $75K in salary and overhead per-person costs. And that's not counting the productivity loss in her not doing the job she was hired to do. Then there are costs such as newsletter articles and mail messages about spam, not to mention legal fees and management time for all this. And we haven't figured in anything for wasted bandwidth, CPU time, or disk space. The total cost of spam is easily in the hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Still, even though the above dollar estimates are extremely conservative and easy to defend, the number of dollars isn't the main issue. The main issue is that spammers are stealing from recipients and carriers so they can make a shady buck.
