When it comes to the management staff, Apple typically hires people who are not technically savvy. They may have computer skills, but those skills are incidental when compared to people/retail skills.
People who are not technically savvy are the prime target for Apple's marketing- so bringing these computer novices into the company and educating them on how everything Mac (hardware, software, iPods, etc) works so smoothly together engenders a sense of loyalty about the brand and the product. Even with a pay raise, working for Microsoft is not very appealing to these folks. There are always exceptions, but my point is that Microsoft would do better to pick from the enormous pool of retail management that has not yet been indoctrinated.
Why this will fail: Apple's staff are only able to do their jobs (selling Macs, increasing brand loyalty) due to the tools they have- the product. If Macs and the software that runs them weren't so fundamentally appealing to consumers it wouldn't matter who was walking the floor- nothing would sell. Apple's sales approach is distinctly hands-off anyway. If this is how Microsoft hopes to copy Apple's success, they are approaching it completely backwards. Besides, Apple's managerial staff typically comes straight from places like the GAP, Target, and other large corporate retailers. Microsoft would have better luck looking at similar places.
I'm surprised I haven't seen Medal of Honor: Allied Assault or Spearhead on this list, nor Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Both are great and somewhat modern FPS that work just fine cross-platform.
X11 is still a stand-alone application located in the utilities directory, and it is not installed by default- you have to manually choose the package when customizing your install.
I've installed Panther onto 2 different boxes and during both installations HFS+ (not journaled) was an available option, and that is what I chose... I don't see how everyone is being forced to use HFS+ with journaling, because that was not my experience at all. On one box, I formatted the HD, and I installed onto an existing partition with the other. In neither circumstance was a journaled FS required..
I'm running Panther and all applications do NOT use the brushed metal interface. Only apps that choose to do so, as it has always been. Give it a chance and I don't think the brushed metal look will bother you after 10 minutes or so. I think it makes the finder more distinctive and easier to use. My only complaint (and it's not a harsh one) is that there is a lot of wasted space in the finder window- they definitely could have made the design more efficient, but in the end it doesn't really matter, it's just a nit-pick.
I purchased a 802.11b card in January, because a new roommate would be moving in with his Airport base station. Before he arrived with his base station I tried the card out and noticed that I had a 75% signal throughout the apartment.
Within 5 minutes I had detected which manufacturer created the WAP next door, found the default admin log and pass, and changed the router name to "goatse.cx" to see if my neighbor would notice.
It's been 3 months and I still use his connection whenever I want to download something and keep my ping down whilst playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I love it. It is NOT difficult to implement WEP, so I don't feel bad about it. The guy could easily secure his network if he felt like it.. or if he was wise enough.
I thought it was at the Lagoon? I'm not sure, but I was there the other night and saw some signage.. I'll probably end up seeing it. Looks pretty neat..

I suppose I should clarify that I only say crazy things when I'm around friends and having a good time- I don't play games alone much, nor talk to myself. This is how we came to this conclusion, we do it around eachother a lot. It has to do with paying more attention to the game than what you're sying.
Also, it has nothing to do with OCD, it's not necessary, it just happens. In order to concentrate and clear your mind of distractions, you focus on one thought while playing the game, and this only happens when you've been going at it for a long time.. I've never applied this "technique" to any other aspects of life. You're reading a lot of extra context into it.

I don't know if I've been in the same zone the article speaks of, but some friends and I have come to a conclusion that the #1 symptom of being overly immersed in a video game is talking absolute nonsense without realizing it. You'll be staring into the screen, and you'll utter completely random phrases that may only loosely, if at all, tie in to anything that's going on around you. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Also, I've been in a state playing games where I repeat the same thought, image, or phrase over repeatedly in my mind until I accomplish the particular part I'm trying to beat in the game. This is pretty common, at least when I get to a point where I'm definitely "stuck" in the game. This thought doesn't necessarily have to do with the game, most often not, actually. Again, can anyone else relate?
Saying you own a Mac says something about you that saying you own a Dell or a Compaq doesn't. It conveys an artsy, "I like what computers can do but I don't like computers" image.
I don't think this is true. I feel sorry for anyone who buys a computer for the -image-. People buy computers for what they do and how they do it, not for the image or lifestyle involved. Those who don't are the minority.
How about this.. stop rationalizing and take the story for what it's worth?
I don't believe your generalization of the common iMac owner is accurate. Though many purchasing the iMac are naive when it comes to hardware matters, I wouldn't place them in the majority. Not everyone is clueless about their computer. Everyone thinks about upgrading their computers at some point, even my grandparents. Guess why they don't want an iMac?
I believe the difference here lies in Iceland having already adopted alternatives by the time the supply runs out, while other nations struggle to catch up.
I think 6-7 years is OTM. Realize that console sales continue even after the next generation arrives. As noted in the article, the PSOne still continues to create decent sales. There were far more powerful systems available when the Genesis and SNES were still in their prime, but consumers will continue to buy the cheaper consoles with a wider variety of games than the newer ones.
Actually.. that 3-shot technique was originated in Hong Kong cinema. Watch some of the more dated Hong Kong action films, especially scenes where actors run up walls and such... One shot of the feet going up the wall, another shot of actor on the wall, another shot of actor coming down. In modern films, you'll probably see visual effects done with a computer instead, but that's where it started. It's a technique used when they need to film something physically impossible. You may be right about it being overused in American film-making, but it originated in Hong Kong and it had a purpose.
Oh damn. Ah well... Perhaps the nation will become so upset and disgruntled with the silly fool, and politics in general over the next 4 years that something -signifigant- will actually happen next election. This may be just what an upstart 3rd party has been waiting for. hrm.

That's silliness. It's nobody but -Gore's- fault for losing to that chump with the shit-eating grin. If Gore was half the politician, nay, person that he claims to be, he would have mopped the bloody floor with him. hmph.
Although I feel DARE fails to prevent drug use, it does serve as a source of somewhat reliable information on the drugs themselves. Although this is not the primary aim of the program, it does aid in informing a future drug user of the dangers involved- if anything, it leads to the use of safer or less harmful drugs. Personally, the program contributed to my interest in certian drugs, and made me cautious of the dangerous varieties. An informed drug user is much safer than one who experiments with whatever they find.

reset PRAM. it should resolve the issue. a silly thing to let slip by, but trivial to fix.
big deal!

You have the option- buy a 3-button mouse! This has always been such a non-issue, I can't believe there's actually an entire story on here about it.

I left the state for college (Minneapolis), and actually plan on moving -back- once I'm finished. Des Moines is just too nice to abandon.
Gateway computers are from South Dakota, aren't they?
Either way, they aren't from Iowa, if that's where you're going with that post.
