RMS can always issue the 2.1 version of the GPL license explictly stating that the software should be named GNU/whatever, and since most of the itme, you're allowed to use the 2.0 verr>sion or, at your option, any later version...
Pretty funny for a guy that's supposed to be for the freedom of speech.
A regular thing? I don't believe I've ever seen a crash on a Linux box that couldn't be attributed to outside influences or hardware failure (note to self: when hot-plugging SCSI drives, take care that you plug the power connector in straight, and don't inadvertently touch a hot connector to ground). If you've had regular crashes under Linux, maybe you have flakey hardware, or maybe your distribution has made buggy modifications (*cough*RedHat?*cough*), or maybe you are simply incompetent.
No operasting system is perfect, not even linux. In any OS, there is going to be crashes once in awhile. After reading this, I have concluded that anything else you have to say about linux is one sided.

Which claim are you referring to, that you're red-baiting or that it makes you look stupid? Making blanket accusations that a large group of people are anti-capitalist while providing no support whatsoever for those accusations can only be described as red-baiting. And if you ask 100 economists and political scientists whether red-baiting makes you looks stupid to them, I guarantee you'll get an overwhelming affirmative
if you can't see the communistic trendencies of slashdot and the GPL, you are bigger of a moron than I thought.
no proof?? just look at the articles written on slashdot, the gnu.org website, and even many of the posters comments.
No shit. It's true.
YOU need to learn about what YOU are talking about. I figured you'd be one of those people that was under the assumption that MS beat netscape because of their OS control. Altough your simple mind cannot comprehend this, IE is better than netscape. I have used them both.
How many of these products, all of which were accepted to be better than the Microsoft competitor, still exist today?
None, because people chose to use a better equivalent. Faster, more features, and of course clippy.
ha!
your rebuttle humors me.
1. How many companies has Microsoft bought up so far?
2. Best? Their products, across the board, have only become reasonably stable or useful compared to their competitors in the last 5 years or so. You could pave US 1 with the boxes of vastly superior competitors who they've killed with unethical marketing, astroturfing, predatory pricing, FUD, and various other obnoxious tactics. That's how they got their monopoly, not by releasing "the best products." *snicker*
3. What the fuck difference does it make? Microsoft have been ruled by the court of appeals to be a criminal organization. Deal with it.
I think you are vastly mistaken. In the past few years, microsoft has used the "embrace and extend" way of getting into the market. Look at what the OSS community is doing. Reverse engineering closed-sourced protocols/drivers (embrace), and then open-sourcing them (extend). And "best" is a matter of opinion. I have used almost all flavors of linux, and they just don't meet the standards of todays apps. Most are sluggish, command-line based, and even when I do get the source, it is un-organized and filled with spaghetti code.
Do you have any idea how stupid red-baiting makes you look to anyone who has a clue about politics or economics?
Any facts to back up your claim.........I didn't think so. I was just stating that the majority of the linux zealouts that are pissed about MS, really don't like them because they are a major symbol of capitalism. They would rather have a communist way of things. "Everything should be FREE".
The beauty of capitalism is this: when microsoft comes out with their new OS (XP) and people realize the licensing fees they will have to pay, they will start looking for alternatives. MS has a monopoly over the OS market, because they are the most popular, NOT because of their "monopolistic" ways.
if you think MS is a criminal organization and needs to be broken up, then if and when linux becomes a dominating OS, and all apps/drivers are written for linux, it should be placed into the public domain. (it stifles competition). Because really, the OS is still owned and operated by linus. 1 man.
You probably still think nestscape lost the browser war because of the MS monopoly..............
Yes it is like the phone lines. Ever try to get a Linux driver out of a winmodem maker (Lucent LT drivers for linux 2.2 notwithstanding)? The "raw materials" in this case are the peripherals.
that is the FREEDOM of the hardware manufacturer. If they want to close the source of their specs, or not release a driver for linux, that's LIFE. I wish people would stop bitching about it, it will get you nowhere.
Wrong. You need documentation on the hardware interfaces, and many peripheral manufacturers have a policy of keeping hardware interfaces a trade secret
ever hear of something called REVERSE-ENGNINEERING? People do it all the time.
let's say linux became the dominating server operating system on the market. Manufacturers started to only write drivers for linux. Should the government force it into the public domain? It would be unfair practices for commericalized closed source OS's. Even IF windows gets destroyed tomorrow, linux is NOT a mature enough OS to take its place.
and comparing microsoft to the AT&T monopoly is like comparing apples and oranges. AT&T became the dominating company because they bought out all others. Microsoft, on the other hand, was the best, and most popular. This argument really isn't about control, or "freedom". It's about capitalism. Most zealouts would rather have things "free". Beer and speech.
Ironic that 99% of linux is GNU software. Software that has never been interested in surveys or graphs or marketshare or domination, but merely to give some freedom back to the users that the corporations took away.
then why care when microsoft is on 99% of the worlds computers? YOUR freedom isn't taken away. You can still use linux all that you want.
let's measure real things like reliability and security and the ability to get it to do anything you need it to do, in any situation
if you're talking about security and reliability, Apache is definitely not to be used in the same sentence. How about the D.o.S attacks that went on a couple of months back on MAJOR websites running apache. It was JUST as bad as the code red worm going around now.
If Joe Sixpack can't figure it out, maybe he shouldn't be running a server at all? Running a server takes responsablity, having a good understanding of all the components and not just hitting OK is a must. Look at the code red worm, there are web servers out there still sending it around! How much hype does it take for the people to finally clue in that they need to patch thier server? Even the most clueless admin should have patched thier servers by now.
You want to know why microsoft web servers are so popular? Because they realized LONG ago that there are more business people like joe six pack, than there are johnny smart. If you want Apache to have wide market saturation, it needs to be powerful, and easy to use.
Care to quote the clauses from the GPL that are against capitalism? You keep making that claim, and you keep being unable to back it up.
And your quote was not from the GPL.
My quote was from the gnu website (created by the father of GPL/GNU software dick stallman). I posted the link. (would nailing it to your forehead be direct enough?)
I think YOU are the one who is confused here. If you have read the GNU license, you will see clauses that are against capitalism. Businesses really have no chance of making a profit under the GNU license.

The difference is that free software naturally tends to spread around, and there are many ways to get it.
With free software, users don't have to pay the distribution fee in order to use the software. They can copy the program from a friend who has a copy, or with the help of a friend who has network access. Or several users can join together, split the price of one CD-ROM, then each in turn can install the software. A high CD-ROM price is not a major obstacle when the software is free.
Any place you see selling non-antique Damascus steel is actually using pattern welding.
This article is talking about the real deal, which was made through a combinations of impurities in the stock (Vandium is what these guys used) and etching the finished blade. Persumably the reason the secret was originally lost was that there were only a few mines that produced the right stock to make it, and when they were exausted, masters stopped teaching their apprentices how to do it.
What you describe is pattern-welded steel, a technique used to mimic the appearence of true Damascus Steel.
At least a dozen Linux boxes has been involved in your journey, whatever the airline... And mainframes with Linux are a big part of it.
if this is going to be the case, I will be flying a lot less. From the experience that I have had with linux, most airplanes would be crashing to the ground within a few hours. (the same for MS). Linux isn't a mature enough OS to be used for airlines. I would rather they be using something In House.
I feel just as uneasy that airlines are using Linux, that I would If I found out they were using microsoft products. They should be using their own systems, written from scratch.
there will never be a "free" system, like stallman wants. Here is why: Let's say, all software was "free" (as in speech). There would still be people that would have to enforce these "freedoms". Im not sure I would like the idea of a "gnu police" busting down my door.
Without this, you would have anarchy.
REAL freedom, would be public domain software.

Your claim was that the poor have all the advantages the wealthy do
my claim is that the poor disadvantage themselves. They can get a job, just like a person in a wealthier area can.
Sounds good to me. You see, I'm not a terminally shortsighted idiot. I realize that every tax dollar that goes to education saves me several on prisons. In addition, it reduces my insurance costs by reducing crime, and increases the number of people who are contributing taxpayers instead of leeches. Finally, it reduces my chances of getting stabbed for my shoes. Basically, I'm intelligent enough to figure out that in the long run, raising taxes to pay for education will save me money.
Don't You UNDERSTAND???? People have been getting their hands held by the government for so long in the US, even if you gave them a free job, or a free education (which, just to let you know, if effect would make things like a college education Useless), they would rather stay poor, and get a free handout.
welefare keeps will keep them in this postion forever. People can work at restaurants, stores, or a factory job with little to no education. They can save the money, and actually do something with their lives.(even move out of shithole areas). But instead, we look upon the poor as people that are down trodden, and need support from the government. (The term "Digital Divide" comes to mind). How about programs where they try to give the "under privilaged" jobs? it failed, and do you know why? Because they could sit on their asses all day and get FREE MONEY from the government. Programs like welfare will turn the United States into a third-world country eventually.
May I suggest you actually get out of your parents' nice suburban home some time and visit a ghetto, or West Virginia, sometime? Maybe talk to some people.
I know what its like to be poor. I also know that people who view life as a wave that washes over them, and do nothing, will become nothing.
They don't have the advantage of living in an area with an adequately funded school district.
In most cases, they don't have the advantage of growing up in areas with low crime or low pollution.
They've had to work from an early age, so haven't had the time to get a good degree from a 4 year school.
I know the solution...Let's give EVERYONE a FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION!!!! people like you support racist programs such as affirmative action.
And why is it that I, as a taxpayer, need to support the 5 kids that a woman who knows she can't afford, has.
I have seen many ghetto areas (mostly in California). But I seriously doubt you ever have. Maybe when you finally get out of your dream world (or 8th grade for that matter) sometime, you will figure out how the Real World (tm) actually works.
