capitalism is the perfect system: You work hard, you get the good things in life. You are lazy, you get nothing. It's not about enslaving anyone. in a society like yours, what the hell is the point of working for anything (the government will just provide me with it). That's why you see so many people in the big metropolitan areas of the states begging for money/not working (welefare). This is also why people over in canada come over to the united states when they need any kind of hospital care.
Is it my ''FREEDOM'' to take your work and claim the credit?
"FREEDOM" is not being forced to open up your source after using a piece of GPL/GNU software. I call that a cancerous growth that most developers stay away from.
I wrote compiler X. Big piece of software was written using compiler X. Should I get credit? No!
The GNU is fine and dandy, but..Credit should only be given where credit is due.
It seems that RMS likes to take credit for any piece of software written under the GPL/GNU. I wish someone would create a "public domain" operating system.
Do you think the murderers on death row thought about the lives of the people they killed?
Even through the eyes of God, the death penality is justified.
I wonder if the encryption of the music will be client->client or if it will actually go through the nappy servers (I would think this would be way too much bandwidth). If it's client->client, someone could just figure out the login string, pay for an account, and release a client that can share "free" music. Anyone else using the service and this client would be able to "pollute" the environment with un-encrypted MP3S.
did the record companies force you to buy the CD's??? No, I think not. If people were to stop buying CD's at such a high price, the record companies would learn that they can't rape the public. But, the average person continues to bend over, and take it. I believe napster is in the right, but for all the right reasons. If napster is held responsible, this would set a precedence for other software companies to be un-necessarily attacked by the RIAA or some other group who is not responsible. The users who are violating the copyrights are responsible. It seems people on this forum are just shifting the blame around. "it's the users, not the software company". "The RIAA is violating napster users' rights". Who's fault is it now?? It's the Artists', for making me want to listen to their music.
I wish some people would just GROW UP?!
Not to change the subject, but individuls have been attacked for violating the GPL.
I laugh at people like you, you will not even realize what is happening until it's too late.
PS. If the GPL is just like a copyright, then there must be no difference. Stop talking about how the GPL = Freedom. IF that were the case, the Copyright would = freedom. Even if you DO get the SOURCE code, it's still not freedom.
me having the ability to take code and put it in a closed source project/sell it/whatever the hell I want to do with it, is FREEDOM. Once linux is taken over by the corporate world, zealouts like you will go to another underdog, like HURD. That's the point.
DOn't you see that linux OS is just as bad as any closed source OS?
I guess YOU are too young to "value" YOUR "freedom"
1) linus, the creator, is a millionaire about 10 time over
2) the kernel is updated by linus, at his leisure. He also works for a company. Don't you see what can happen?? He could, at any moment, sell the kernal rights to a company, whereas they would have the ultimate power. If it were a "Free" OS, it would be released to the public under no license (NOT GNU/GPL/etc.). This is the ultimate freedom, which you fail to realize.
3) if I want to sell gpl'd source, I am forced to give out my source as well, this isn't freedom.
Here is a fact: Life doesn't wash over you like a wave. People do have choices, homeless people CAN find JOBS, but many of them decide to beg for money, because it requires little to no work with probably a pretty good return payout.
It's not like im a cold-hearted bastard here. If i see someone down on their luck, I will slip them a few extra bucks. Everyone has bad luck sometime in their life. Maybe they lost a job, or can't find one. But, if we hand-feed them with government funded programs, they will not even bother looking for a job.
Here is the thing, though. I dislike the fact that the government is funding everything, which happens in a socialist society. Im not the type of person that likes to wallow in my own dispair, and get paid by the government.
I would like the chance to make $100,000, without having to pay for the mistakes of others.(it's called capitalism)
That's why capitalism is good,
and socialism is bad.
As soon as the US becomes totally socialist (which it is partly already), it will no longer be the most powerful contry in the world.
The slashdot community talks about how the government is getting too involved in our lives, yet think socialism is a *good* thing. I admit, there are people that need government help (handicapped or mentally disabled), but not EVERYONE needs a handout. To keep a thriving society, homeless people should be educated/trained to find jobs. Most homeless people would refuse to do this because it's too hard, and never working is the easy way out.
Look at the United States Today. Cities are full of poverty, not because of capitalism, but because of the few threads of socialism that still exist. The welefare and or The governemnt handouts. We need to teach people that can't take care of themselves, how to.
let's say a company charged $1000 for a piece of source-code, but..everyone else who wanted to use it had to pay $1000 as well (kind of like the GNU, but with a monitary addition, which you say shouldn't matter), what would slashdotters think?
they would try every way possible to get it for "Free" not free as in country, but free as in NO MONEY. If you havn't seen evidence of this, you are even more blind then I thought.
many people could give a shit about free as in country software. The only thing going for linux (in the regular, non techie world), is the fact that it's free as in NO MONEY.
im not saying im being forced to use it, im just tired of people like you claiming it has anything more to do with freedom than the copyright.
DO you really believe that garbage?
I am in no way "fooled" into my opinion. I am comparing the facts.
Tell me a system that's better, and show me facts.
capitalism is the perfect system: You work hard, you get the good things in life. You are lazy, you get nothing. "FREEDOM" is not being forced to open up your source after using a piece of GPL/GNU software. I call that a cancerous growth that most developers stay away from.
1) I didn't write a compiler, I was just using X as an example.
2) if you didn't release the source, sold it, that would be fine. It's called FREEDOM.
If it's not Public domain, it's not free as in speech. Neither is the copyright. Learn the difference.
why does that matter?
I wrote compiler X. Big piece of software was written using compiler X. Should I get credit? No!

it has been done already :-)
http://opennap.sourceforge.net
It's the next napster

im just trying to show you how foolish an excuse of "music is essential, that's why the RIAA deserves to have their music on napster" really is.
as a recreational drug user, heroine is essential for me to live. SO...why should the government take this a way from me? It's my right!
so, the copyright isn't, but the GPL/GNU license is?? They are both the same.
Here is what is essential: Food, water, and the air we breathe. Everything else is something you want rather then need.
did the record companies force you to buy the CD's??? No, I think not. If people were to stop buying CD's at such a high price, the record companies would learn that they can't rape the public. Just something to think about.......
A free alternative is here: Opennap. it already has media files, just like scour did, and music like napster.
I laugh at people like you, you will not even realize what is happening until it's too late.
/whatever the hell I want to do with it, is FREEDOM. Once linux is taken over by the corporate world, zealouts like you will go to another underdog, like HURD. That's the point.

is a troll someone who is against the grain of the regular sheep?
Tell me this, why is it that he can only make updates to the kernel??
FREEDOM OS?
DOn't you see that linux OS is just as bad as any closed source OS?

wow, you must really think you know me......
who are you to judge me??? I tell it as I see it.
where is your wisdom and intelligence?
Here is a fact: Life doesn't wash over you like a wave. People do have choices, homeless people CAN find JOBS, but many of them decide to beg for money, because it requires little to no work with probably a pretty good return payout.

Why would we want that??
Here is what I don't understand...

one more thing: I noticed I was rated: Troll. this should be Read: against the opinion of the socialist slashdot community.
