Please, please please please please pretty pretty please with a pink pony on top, people of slashdot, use correct units/etc when talking about radiation
But this is not going to be a Chernobyl-level catastrophe..
I really hate that the above statement is becoming the bright side at Fukushima.
The sad thing is that it continously needs to be said, because as soon as something happens at a nuclear plant, everyone goes OMG JUST LIKE CHERNOBYL!!!. When it comes to Nuclear stuff, people simply have two modes "uh oh, yeah nuclear, whatever, isnt that like bad or something?" and "THE SKY IS FALLING, WE ARE DOOOOOOMED". Both reactions dont do us any good, but the latter is worse (basic knee yerk reaction, amplified because of the nucularness)
but yeah, it is shitty that fukushima is still sliding downhill
here in holland petrol is significantly more expensive then germany/belgium, enough that people in border areas fuel up abroad.
and all that money doesnt even go into roads and such, like it should, most of the road network is very much low capacity, and we are only just starting to build extra roads
damn politicians
Also, i wouldnt care about having an electric car for the daily drives and such as long as the infrastructure is up to scratch (long enough range + near instant "refueling"), but hobby-wise, they will get my suck-squeeze-bang-blow mobile when they pry it out of my cold dead hands
just think of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games we can look forward to in 20-30 years! i propose the end-boss can be godzilla.
Honestly though, i think its a bit over the top to go out of your way not to show certain episodes of the simpsons, it is a pretty lighthearted show, but if you want you can find offense in any episode. I guess any episode with cletus in it shouldnt be shown in half the states... or they better pull "who shot mister burns" in areas with high gun-violence stats
Hell, i hope they dont show any episode with Apu in it in any indian (the non-casino variety) communities, those people might be very offended
back in 2009, shortly after the economy went down the drain, i spent six months at home, benched by my resourcing agency, because people just werent hiring, never mind hiring external people. At the end of the six months, i got two possible assignments, neither of them in my field fo focus (java), but you dont tell the guy who's been paying your salary for the past six months of doing nothing, that you'd rather stay home another six months then take those jobs.
I ended up taking one of the assignments, and getting a perm contract by that company, because i didnt want to go back to sitting on the bench. I ended up with a 2 year hole in my java experience and 1.5 years of intersystems cache (search the daily wtf for "a case of the mumps" for some insight). I'd rather spend the rest of my career working in vb.net then going back to that crap.
Right now i'm back at working in java, got a job at a large company with a large java group, and i love it
i guess it being the airforce, they have some serious network security in place, so it wouldnt surprise me at all to see all of sony's IPs blacklisted in their firewall anyway (or they should, just to be sure)
so i guess it would take a 3G-ethernet modem and a cable to ruin their day
in most cases though, positive discrimination (in whatever form) ends up somehow hurting other people because another party needs to be "equal"
Here in holland, there were serious plans to dumb down the math/science curriculum in high schools to lure more girls into the exact sciences (because somehow it is unacceptable that only ~10% of physics/math students is female), universities promptly protested because the current crop of new students had bad enough math base knowledge is it was. Positive discrimination in this case was cause for a serious lowering in educational standards
yes i have driven when tired or frustrated, but being drunk is far more preventable then being tired. I can far more easily decide not to get drunk before driving then not getting tired.
i would have my doubts about it ending well because 1) i dont believe he could change that easily and 2) i wouldnt like her marying anyone belonging to an active church (i have no problems with spirituality, but i dislike the sheep mentallity which prevails in many religions), but i would not prevent her, as i believe that she has the right to make her own decisions, it is up to me as the parent to raise her to be a well and balanced adult, what she does then is not for me to allow or disallow.
i am an iOS user (well, i have an ipod touch with some apps, that is), and i dont give a crap either way if they do or do not remove this app, so i wouldnt bother with this petition either way (also add in the extra treshold of having to give up my email/name to some guy running a petition).
Morally, i object against that app, but what apple does in their playground doesnt bother me at all, and i would guess that most people are that way, and simply dont vote, even if they have an opinion on the morals here
part of the reason why people dont want to think sexual preference can change is to resist the whole "we must cure the gays" movement that claims gay people are merely misguided and broken, and have to be fixed. Claiming that they cant be fixed, and it is just who they are (not broken versions of a straight guy), is a valid defense there.
I dont think gay people are broken, and i certainly believe people can change (probably their sexual preference too), but i dont believe people can change at will, it takes an huge amount of willpower to change small stuff about yourself, never mind something as deeply rooted like sexual feelings etc..
saying "hay, i'm here i'm queer and i'm just fabulous!" is somewhat different then saying "being gay is wrong", in that the first has a somewhat positive note about it, the second is nothing but screaming that someone different then you is wrong/defective/whatever.
now if the message was "i'm straight and its great", that would be a different thing
not to day that there arent loads of double standards when it comes to policital correctness (dont get me started on "positive discrimination"), but this isnt one
A fully grown man can have about 3 glasses of wine with a meal and be dangerously close to the legal limit....but may not be anywhere near impeded to the point of not being able to drive a car safely
how hard is it NOT to drink three glasses of wine when you know you will be driving in the next three-five hours?
And honestly, i've had occasions where drinking one beer (a belgian triple in fact) noticably impacted my responsetimes, the same goes when i drink two glasses of wine. Granted i dont conform to the weight-range for an american fully grown man (only 85 kilos), but i shouldnt be driving in that state
I am fairly confident that in most cases (non-empty stomach), i should be able to drive just fine after drinking a single (or two) beer, but the fact is that i know it is a sliding slope (ah, just one more beer, and then i'll quit, and i'll be fine really!), so when i drive, i dont drink, how hard can it be?
"I've been drinking but I should be good to drive.... hmm looks like there's a checkpoint on my way home, maybe I shouldn't risk it..."
not sure if i'm missing some massive sarcasm or anything, but that is NOT a good point, if you feel like driving past a checkpoint is a risk you dont want to take, then DRIVING should be a risk you dont want to take. Your wording suggests you dont have zero tolerance over there, so then DUI limits are non-zero, and probably at some level which WILL impact your response-time
I wouldnt have any trouble what so ever with a zero-tolerance law, provided you dont get nicked for eating a single chocolate with some dubious filling
evading a police checkpoint because even though i never drink and drive, i HATE getting stopped and being at the mercy of some lowly educated police thug who by law has all sorts of ways to make me uncomfortable and consume my time?
Granted, it might be a bit weak, but i consider that to be a very legitimate use of such an app, just because some people dont have the discipline to not drink when they will be driving (or not drive when they drank some beers), doesnt mean i should suffer right?
(disclaimer, dont have an iphone, dont have such an app since police checkpoints are pretty scarce here, and never drink when i drive)

a more accurate translation would be "absolute nonsense", the translation is rather poor realy

i propose a ban of people making propositions!
