True, there was widespread bitching and moaning when Painter came in a can.
But software boxes are not the same size, height or width. So it is possible to make the boxes smaller or remove it all together. I had a copy of Lotus 123 that was just a few books and a diskette, shrink wrapped.
Given the reduced importance of retailers and store shelves, it is possible to do away with packaging. It seems wasteful to have to ship a box when the CD can fit in an envelope.
True, Gnome looks like shit at low resolution. It also does not work properly. The same goes for GTK, the gimp's menu does not fit on a small screen. It is impossible to choose the jpeg option on the save as menu.
The same goes for the panel, which is overly large on a small screen. I have never used KDE, but I think the problem may be due in no small part to X.
I concur, imagine an an 8-9 hr flight with some moron yapping at the top of his/her voice. It would be worse when the plane is delayed on the ground as the unwashed masses decide to call home to say they will be delayed.
The problem of data and control dependencies relate to chip design, and any leeway is generally exploited at that level. Pipeling allows the chip to run multiple instructions in parallel - this is why RISC kicks ass.
The SMP speedup is limited by additional factors. In order to execute correctly the processors must communicate, and this takes time. So for maximum benefit it is advisable to reduce communication, so 'fast' parallel programs have to be designed with this in mind. Constant communication (aka synchronization) would require the processors to wait and/or cause cache invalidations.
Interesting I will read as soon as I finish my homework. But I don't think Linux is as susceptible to virus since most viruses are spread by running pirated or other dubious software. Since switching to Linux, I have only installed two such progs and I checked the source. Even if someone were to infect a popular ftp, the offending program would be removed quickly. I think the way in which the os is used rather than its capabilities, will protect it from viruses. Imagine what you would do if your box was wiped out by a virus tomorrow ?.
How is this redunndant ? This is one of the first articles to make note of the fact that Walnut Creek is Slackware's home. Or rather used to be about a year ago - I don't know. Let me see one of the most venerable Linux distros gets taken over by BSDI( merge - whatever) and the post is redundant ??.
The most interesting thing about this merger is the effect on Slackware, if it is still affiliated with Walnut Creek, BSD license is too liberal for this to make a difference.

I disagree, Linux fame is quite recent. In fact when I first found out I could afford Unix, it was a small classified ad in Byte magazine - for Walnut Creek. This was a mere three years ago.
I chose linux because Walnut Creek says it was simpler to use and install. It also supported more hardware. My point is most Linux users are older than me, and did not choose Linux for its recent fame.
I agree, when you are finished with a domain name you should return it. I believe this is beneficial to all parties concerned. Of course I believe people should obey the rules concerning domain names also, so I may be too idealistic.
Isn't it time slashdot change to slashdot.org, it is no longer non commercial. And while you're at it spend some VA money to upgrade this system.

Slashdot and Freshmeat may be popular, but are they really influential. Slashdot is basically a concentrator of relevant news, the majority of its 'articles' are links to other places and the bulk of its content is user submissions. And while respected, it is not revered by its users.
Freshmeat provides news about new software programs, again information that is available from other sources.
VA Linux is a small maker of computers, again there are alternatives. In fact most people use the alternatives.
The only troubling merger I have seen is the purchase of Cygnus by Redhat, GCC is instrumental to Linux's survival. But even that is released under GPL. Bottom Line:- Any company that pisses on the Linux community is likely to face a backlash, so none will.
VA Linux is NOT the most influencial player in the linux 'market'. I am sure it is not even the most popular hardware platform for Linux users, sure most of us want a VA machine - but can we afford it ?.
Also I think that the software aspect is where the influence in Linux lies, RedHat buying Andover.Net would be more troubling. Or even IBM, Dell or one of the more popular hardware platforms. VA's purchase merely shores up against the coming of the really really big companies.
It is not surprising that etoys sought to remove etoy, it will happen a lot more as the net becomes more commercial. And while some may stand for free speech those that stand for free trade will win everytime. Has happened in the pass and will happen in the future
Slashdot has not changed, it has just gotten larger. It is common to see post with more than 100 comments, no one has enough free time to read that many. Also the moderation and other improvements have changed the nature of the site - for better or worse.
I think these are growing pains, and it is unlikely the site will be as cosy as it once was.
BTW. Since slashdot is no longer non-commercial should it not change the TLD
Sure you do not work for Intel ? They did not recall the Pentium. They denied the bug, then claimed it only showed up under rare circumstances. And then they reluctantly offered to replace the defective chips. I believe the user had to do the actual switching.
So they ship a computer that had a problem with multiplication/division then pulled an Iomega. A recall is when a company that worries about lawsuits pulls a defective product before some 'wise' person injures themselves.
1. The planet contains more than 5 Billion people, most of whom do not have access to computers.
2. Another similar situation concerns id.com, which is owned by a publisher of Next Software. They post a link to id (creator of quake and all games great) as a courtesy
3. Taken to the obvious conclusion, any domain starting with ms should belong to microsoft. Since "most" people would think msearch or mssearch is a microsoft search engine. And so on for other companies with abbreviations.
Interestingly enough, ms.com belongs to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. They will never be evicted.
4. Linux is a trademark of Linus, should he be allowed to confiscate all the domains with Linux ?
5. What is the purpose of Network Solutions ? They should make an effort to prevent acts of cybersquatting. A check of registered trademarks should be implemented, or some similar precaution. But if a name is given it should not be taken away.
6. I know the internet is American, but the rules governing domains should be implemented FOR EVERYONE.
At some point the stupidity of this must dawn on you, all of you. If I did not see it from the start I would be hard pressed to understand how the departure of one man, could lead to this flame war. I could understand the uproar over the BBC quote, though I felt some are too thin skinned. But this one is truly stupid, an argument over people not being nice enough!!!. I have not heard such shit since kg - a long time ago.
It only took one ill advised post by Sanity to launch others into a truly pointless diatribe. May I ask what is the point, what did you hope to accomplish. At the end is there some sense of satisfaction. In short, Why ?.
If you keep saying it you will eventually believe it and then it will come through. The Linux community will change as it grows, but GNOME KDE and all the other projects can coexist. Look how GNU and Linux combine nicely, despite differences in opinions. Such disagreements are to be expected, but they are not the end of the world. As long as the ideal is bigger than the differences we are okay.
Unless you happen to a minority in a heterogenous society, you will neer have a clue as to the ribulations of the oppressed. Being teased in high school, does not compare to being beaten on the streets because of your race. In one case you live, the other you can die.
And while most schools have cliches, Americans must be applauded for carrying it to such an extreme. You must accept the fact that school will remain hell for a large group of students, and with a lot of guns people will continue to die. Then others will gather around and be unable to figure out why. As much success will be made stopping school shootings as has been made stopping crack

Hackers are often unconcerned with the havoc their computer probing might wreak. Statements from what may be called the radical left among hackers sound even more anarchic. "Philosophically," pronounced Richard Stallman, a self professed hacker and expert programmer who has placed some of his best work in the public domain, "We do not believe in property rights"

No distributions, then I wouldn't get a shiny new box or manual. I have to make do with the old ones. What about shiny new CDs, with cool new graphics.
Buying distros is a manner of supporting Linux (indirectly) it is also an easier way to make large scale changes. Or small scale changes that you have a problem figuring out.
My RH 5.2 system represents almost 4 months of screwing around, so I concur.
The superiority of the capitalist system has never been proven. A system that relies on the exploitation of fellow man is fundamentally flawed. So please take a close look at the damage done by capitalist in other parts of the world.
Now given the nature of capitalism, it is necessary in civilized society to implement rules. These rules are designed to benefit the consumer, even if it means saving him/her from themselves. JD Rockefeller pioneered the practice of charging people for using other peoples services. Microsoft's licenses concerning Windows, Office and Works was a clever copy (or so I have heard). The 'alternative' proposed is not feasible. For obvious reasons it does not benefit society to have a company make a profit from a competitors sale.
Most windows users will say they like windows as they lack a comparative frame of reference. Most of these people have never had the opportunity to try an alternative. So it is stupid, I am sorry but it is, to say they prefer Windows. They lack the information to make an informed decision.
Finally, you call others sheep for their impassioned defence of Linux. You should consider your views on capitalism, imperialism and anti trust. They paint you as a less than rational person.

You failed to mention that some SCSI devices do not adhere to the SCSI specifications. By design or accident some SCSI devices are non standard.
i think this is the most correct.
