    Windows 2000 supports the Itanium processors, .NET Server should also run on the itanium but it has not yet been released.

    XP ? I am not sure but I don't think it is supported.

    OK, most people have quite a few accounts and some of these accounts are used infrequently. And in a large number of these cases it is considered more important to be able to access the account than to protect it. Quite frankly, I could care less if some one accesses my voice mail ... it would be inconvenient if I have to call verizon to reset my password.

    The registers make the servers more efficient. Also why doesn't anyone complain about grocery stores and barcodes. Why don't we give them a sheet of paper and a pen, so what if it takes them 15-30 minutes to ring up a customer ?

    I know some s/w vendors use a similar policy to gouge customers. A current example would be Championship manager which seems to have only one source in the US, and most of the online dealers don't do foreign shipments.

    Another example would be ID, which was releasing Doom 2 in the US about 2-3 months after releasing Doom in the UK. And the publisher with the UK rights sued the US retailers to prevent purchases by UK residents. BTW Doom was running with ~50% markup.

    Cars are not intuitive, they just have severely limited functionality. And given the number of accidents they are not that well designed.

    Also most people I know have to carry their cars to mechanics when something goes wrong, or they need regular maintenance. When was the last time you needed professional help using a word processor ?

    While I do think the US software industry will decline, I disagree with the result of the decline.

    When the software development industry becomes more mature it will look like all other such industries e.g. automobiles, consumer electronics. I think the clothing examples are pointless since clothes is cultural - how many american women would buy a sari ?

    Stallman is not asking that the kernel be renamed GNU/Linux but rather the operating system, there is a BIG difference.

    Are ypu suggesting that RMS believes he created most of the GNU/Linux operating system ? And you are basing this on a sig.

    Did you know he claims to be a saint also ? Is it possible sig is a joke ?

    FYI His bio on stallman.org does not claim ownership of Linux. It claims ownership of FSF, GNU Project, Emacs, GDB and GCC

    Even so, most of the furor is over the fact that RMS insists that Linux be referred to as GNU/Linux, given the fact that a lot of the software in a Linux distro is part of the GNU project this is NOT an unfair suggestion. Surely you believe that members of FSF should get credit for their work ?

    I don't see the dilemma the GPL requires you to distribute the source if you distribute the program you must include the source. If your company modifies and sells/distributes a GPLed program it 'must' provide the source to its consumers.

    'You' can't decide to distribute it because it (the mods) do not belong to you.

    to me it is like this.
    Imagine mosaic was GPLed.
    Microsoft would have to include Mosaic's code with every copy of IE shipped.
    But programmer X would not be allowed to send IE's code to me. Just like how he is not allowed to send XP to me now.

    While a grad student, my university standardised on Solaris and RedHat Linux. so some students had CDE while others had the choice of KDE or GNOME. And some of us - me - spent 8+ hours my workstation.

    So yes, gnome on solaris would be a good thing. CDE is a peace of crap thankfully Solaris also comes with Motif or OpenStep which s much more functional.

    Got news for you, the teacher already knows what he is teaching. In most cases he is not dependent on you in any way. Professors need to attract grant money, while TA's need good grades - ensuring the student learns is the responsibility of the student.

    Most american universities are subsidised by the government, either through research grants to professors or more direct assistance. This combined with education related tax breaks means that the US government and taxpayers have a substantial investment in the education of most college students.

    Just deny the robot access in the robot.txt. I can't remember if it is possible to specify images against the entire site. But the solution exists, and always has. And this can be done without any more idiotic regulations.

    Of course the idea that the search engines are stealing from him is questionable. Someone would download a jpeg instead of purchasing a book of pictures ? I don't think so.

    The comparison was between AMD and Intel, both x86 manufacturers. RISC don't enter into it. the x86 chips have highly similar instructions sets so it should be possible to use CPI - as far as divergent instructions go

    My understanding is that a system that allows computer controlled cars on highways exists. And that work is being done to use the system in cities. the latter is based on hearsay from an AI grad, who is not affiliated with the project.

    While I agree with your point, you fail to mention that computers can drive much better than people. They would be able to handle construction zones and on ramps with aplomb, unlike the morons whose sole purpose is to prevent others getting in front of them. I think the only problem is convincing people give up control of their cars, and handling the idiots that don't.

    Consider the blowout scenario, a sensor can detect the blowout by; looking at the tire, hearing the sound of the blowout, noting the change in handling or simply monitoring the pressure within the tire. the computer can even stop the car as the likelihood of a blowout reaches a critical point - i am not a car guy so this might not be possible. and in the case of a blow out a computer will simply take release the gas and cruise to a stop. it would slam on the brakes flip over and kill everyone like a human.

    Plus the x10 ads are quite effective, i am actually taking the time to refer to a product that is close to a decade old. x10 has not had this much play since radio shack carried them

    Your company hired a programmer that does not know what a pointer is. Maybe they should invest in a more intensive interviewing process. We were taught this crap in first year and my school sucked. Or maybe they should stop hiring tradeschool grads expecting univ quality.

    The majority of "programmers" use visual basic, so it is probable that the majority of programming jobs also use visual basic. Also C and C++ are two distinct languages, making the jump from C to Java is no more difficult than the jump from C to C++. Also UW does not run a trade school. And finally Java is more accessible than C++, easier to find install etc.
