They aren't totally useless, but Shadows and Mirroring from a 1996 game throws it for a loop still(thats what causes the lag in Baldurs Gate) Thats stuff thats well past even the "We should have implemented this just for kicks" point.
For processing power etc, it doesn't matter, but if they would support more of the widely used functions, even with very limited accelerations, it would be a lot more useful. As is any ATi/Nvidia mobility GFX on board will whomp it simply because it has support for a lot of these things.
I don't want to play heavy duty new games on my laptop, but I would like to be able to play say, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on full settings every now and then. A lot of older games look almost as good as new games if you can just turn all of the extras on and they could run just fine even with the CPU doing pretty much all of the leg work.
Hmm, It probably has more to do with what effects I'm trying to use then. I know the on board intel video isn't much more than an on board sound card style codec processor but the CPU should have enough power to make it through most things. However shadows etc are probably a no go, and I do like my shadows.
Kings Bounty actually looks interesting though, mayhaps I'll try it.
Also neither of those look much more advanced graphically than Baldur's Gate(titans quest is about on par, somewhat better than, Diablo II which isn't much of an improvement over the Baldurs Gate engine), and I probably shouldn't have said "decent" in my statement but "more modern" aka more realistic. Graphics can be good looking without being more realistic.
I've used ATi cards almost religiously since back in 2002 ish(major problems with nvidia, not the cards so much as the people that answered the phone when I had problems) and I've only had one card go bad and one have heat issues but I didn't bother replacing it, just tossed it into a computer I built for my grandmother out of spare parts, it wasn't a serious issue unless there was gaming going on(card still going today, 6 years later). This is out of some 100+ ATi cards I have bought/sold/installed over the years.
My nVidia evidence is much more anecdotal but had 4 of them, problems with 3, 2 of those 3 were driver issues that were fixed and the 3rd did some fancy heat sink reconfiguration as someone mentioned above and melted the fan off of itself, apparently that series (it was an MX440 or some such I believe) was famous for it though. Incidentally the one ATi that failed on me would have done something similar I think except it cut power before it could.
I also had an Enermax PSU blow up on me(literally) but I still use enermax, it was nVidias support with the replacement for the melted one that killed it for me.
I'm not sure exactly what you're playing but anything with decent graphics post 2002 is pretty much a snail fest on even the newest on board intel gfx.
Hell, I still get lag on my laptop Intel Integrated gfx on Baldurs Gate sometimes. Thats what, 1996?
Personally I really loved the old ATI marketing and color schemes. I'd like to see them keep it all and just replace ATI with AMD instead of switching the whole thing to the green/black amd colors.
Funny how fast intel seemed to have dumped that "Completely annihilated by AMD using less than half of our R&D budget" badge that they were wearing for a couple of years after the Athlon64 was released.
Given the level of fanboyism displayed by a lot of people these days I think you may be very very surprised at the actual answer to the question "Did they mean to do it"
I doubt it was a company policy since none of those are Microsoft but still, even thats a possibility, and it really shouldn't be.
It can very easily be unfeasible, especially in todays market, and he already said he was young. Quitting a job for any reason at a young age without another job to move into is risky in the best of circumstances, and we aren't exactly living in the best of circumstances. Its risky for anyone, but particularly for someone that may not have the experience to be even looked at for a lot of other jobs.
In the choice between "Leaving my family for 6 months" or "Staying and forcing my family to live in poverty for the next 10+ years because I just didn't want to go" is there really a choice? If you actually do see a choice there I hope you never have dependents, and don't have them now.
If it was actually intended for the chinese market and not to "accidentally" be sold to other countries through international web sites and under-the-table dealers I might agree with you.
I'm not really limiting my options, I haven't purchased a Sony product since my PS2 years ago for multiple reasons, not just this sort of thing.
I realize that Sony thinks they won, but they really haven't. They've lost money on the console and whatever you may think about the "slashdot rage" it will translate into more negative PR and more lost sales when they really really need to make their platform more popular, not less.
They've already lost a small fortune on the PS3 though so you're probably right and they won't notice the small blip.
As an aside however theres more and more mounting evidence(another slashdot story thats on the front page for one) that these guys are purely pandering to their shareholders and not listening to their own industry experts when they make these sorts of decisions. Something like this definitely won't kill a company that large overnight, or even ever, but it certainly won't help it either.
Some of the PS3 titles are already shipping with that sort of DRM though, X360 titles as well.
Basically though, a lot of these folks don't realize that people want their modern consoles to play old games, and theres a good sized market that want to run NES/SNES etc emulators, I happen to be one of them. Obviously not everyone is going to be a part of this market, but you lose that market when the system is as locked down as the PS3 and you lose any word of mouth and get some negative word of mouth advertising from that group.
They may have friends that probably won't use emulators much but want to have the ability to, or simply recommend a different system based on the fact that the PS3 can't run emulators anymore. Sure it won't turn everyone they know, but it will cause more lost sales. Its a bit of a trickle effect and theres a lot you can do with a video game system to combat piracy that people will put up with, but there is a limit and Sony is pushing past the boundaries of that limit in many ways.
The thing you're missing is that the consumers are still flocking to the systems with less DRM. Sure Sony maintains a market share, mostly through virtue of its locked down platform attracting developers, but I would argue locking it down more when they reached an equilibrium that could eventually push more publishers onto their platform and have them maintain consumer market share only puts them in a position where they have everything to lose and nothing to gain.
A 100% secure gaming system with awesome graphics and nearly every major publisher on board is still going to be a failure if theres an alternative that has games that are "good enough" for most gamers and less of a pain in the ass to deal with so gamers flock to the other platform. Or to put it better, they can have everything else, but if they don't have consumers they're screwed anyways.
3 billion and thats from back in 2008. The thing only started turning a profit q2 2010 so tack on whatever was lost in the in between time, and sony is still lagging as the 3rd most popular console on a contest field of 3. This is the furthest thing from a successful business model.
Razor1911 were the cracks that I used on my KoToR I and II. The games were nearly unplayable without the cracked EXE. I was experiencing crashes left right and center and at that point I already had some experience with similar situations so I said "Hey, I'll go get the cracked.exe and see if it runs better without the DRM." Poof, what do you know? Rock solid games. Rock solid games that will work even on Win7, if you have the cracks installed. Without them it won't even get to the splash screen.
Right, so Sony had almost exactly what they wanted in regards to control over their system. Then they decided that "almost" wasn't good enough and now they're knee deep in the shit storm they started and trying to litigate their way out of it. Its costing them in company rep and in their pocket books with legal fees.
I hope the industry learns something from this, but sadly it probably won't.
Thats because they don't actually need it. They need to learn how to print somewhat legibly but beyond that? No.
I personally haven't written anything more than a quickly scrawled note to myself in about 15+ years. I do it in cursive because I learned it that way, but block printing would have more than sufficed for how often I use it.
Hmm, Emulation perhaps? Thats about all I can think of if the old hardware isn't available. That would require custom implementation of course and may be too expensive but its about the most accurate method without the actual hardware. Though you would want to have the actual hardware for comparison at first.
Because even underclocked the new processors are faster. Most of them get a lot more work done per clock than previous generations and trying to fuzz it would be hard.
As long as google remains as not being a paramilitary organization I'll trust google over any government/ISP. At least they take a stand when asked to turn over user data.
Basically we're living in a world where you have to choose one big brother or the other. So I choose Google, the fuzzier cuddlier googlier one.

How about something Red?
Personally I really loved the old ATI marketing and color schemes. I'd like to see them keep it all and just replace ATI with AMD instead of switching the whole thing to the green/black amd colors.

ATI really only started doing that after they were acquired by AMD so I wouldn't worry too much.
Given the level of fanboyism displayed by a lot of people these days I think you may be very very surprised at the actual answer to the question "Did they mean to do it"
I doubt it was a company policy since none of those are Microsoft but still, even thats a possibility, and it really shouldn't be.

I think you have a high opinion of chatroulette.

Except for the fact that sony has lost an absolute truckload of money on the PS3 in general. These little bits are just adding insult to injury.

NDAs are such a bitch.
I think you should talk to Julian Assange at Wikileaks so that those of us that want the juicy details can get them.
P.S. Theres a fat unmarked manila envelope in it for you. We all chipped in. Its a really nice envelope.

I think we may have been separated at birth. I made a very similar joke within a week or so.
Did you get the same reaction? One guy started to laugh before he caught himself and the rest looked at me in horror.

You really don't. You could end up with one of the two ARCnet plus deployments that were done.

Unfortunately my timetable revolves around everyone else's. I can't take time off in the middle of the day. If I could do that I definitely would!
