  1. Security? on Red Hat 7.0 Coming On Monday · · Score: 2

I wonder if RH is going to put any consideration into security this time? 6.0 wasn't exactly the most secure OS in the world... or do we not want "newbies" to be securE?

I remember on campus (FSU) when we tried to get a dos prompt when all we had was Netscape. We actually changed the "program association" for a .gif file to "command.com". then when you right clicked on an image and hit "open" you had command.com (and thus debug, type, etc). Might be a similiar hack (or crack or whatever) in the Linux ver.

  4. Re:Moral stand? on RIAA Responds to Napster - Raises Serious Questions · · Score: 1

As we speak, the record labels are "eveloping napster clones". Should Napster (rightfully, IMHO) be declared a legal peice of software, they will "already" have their clones ready to market to compete with Napster. In fact, should Napster be declared illegal and shutdown, they would most likely implement this anyway! You won't hear about this now because it would ruin their arguments in court. However, I bet that after this is settled (regardless of the outcome) the record labels are going to come to market with some system of MP3 distribution.

Also, as stated in the introduction of the RIAA filing, "Napster brings about the Death of CDs". Absolutely. CDs ARE DEAD! Take a clue RIAA! You just don't know it yet.

Napster provides easy access to MP3 distribution. MP3 is the next technological music revolution. Just Cassette replaced 8track, and CD replaced cassettes.

so you have an LCD but don't have a controller/card for it? Try this:

    a) go to http://www.flat-panel.com/
    b) find your model of LCD in thier list
    c) cross reference that with what kind of video card you want - you have 3 options: ISA, PCI, or ANALOG (analog meaning passthru connector)

This should get you started. I got a sweet panel and card (aka controller) from them for my sweet sweet MP3 Jetta. The Heads Up Display (HUD) didn't come from flat-panel.com though...

  7. Re:learn from their mistakes, huh on Understanding Script Kiddies · · Score: 1

What are they supposed to learn from their mistakes, pray?

In my first post I qualified that statement with "most likely". The point being that as maturity develops (which will "most likely" happen to them - if for no other reason than fear of the law when they become responsible at age 18), I tend to think they will turn their skills into constructive skills. Please note that I am speaking from my own experience and from the followup posts that agree.

How to make a knife from a spoon, to hide it from guards, to stab people with it and not get caught?

What are you talking aboot? I eat with a fork. If you're implying they will spend jail time then you should note that the criminal system is in place for the most part as a rehabilitation location. Most juvenilles caught doing such acts, (i would think) would be scared straight or would mature sufficiently (see point #1 above) and be able to join productive society.

How to join a gang, make a tattoo gun from a ballpoint pen and a walkman, and intimidate the rest of the cell block?

I'm not sure how you tied gangs into jail. Although, I would certainly rather my neighbors (inevitably) bratty kid be a cyberpunk than a gang member.

    Great...

  8. Been there... on Understanding Script Kiddies · · Score: 3

Okay, this isn't intended to be flamebait. When I was immature and had the "M4D SKILLZ" and virtually unlimited free time on my hands in High School it was fun to try and get into machines. It started by hacking games like Dungeons of Kairn; but it developed into trying to access other machines (ie Emulex/2 BBS software). This isn't a justification for this behavior, but I hope it does provide some reasonable insight into the logic behind it. There's something inherent (this can be argued) about being a teenager and being seen as "bad". The "James Dean" effect if you will. Now, the formula reads as follows:

Immaturity+M4DSKillZ(basic softwareknowledge)+a desire to prove yourself to your peers(linked to immaturity)==Silly Script Kiddie (scripts are for kids!)

Most likely they will outgrow this and move into security careers or get caught via tougher legislation and learn from thier mistakes.

How closed minded you are for being a fellow slashdotter. Eventually we won't have to drive our cars; they'll be vessels that take us where we want to go and we can do what we wish whilst on them. When that happens we will be computing thanks to forward thinking from people like the megacar crew.
I tend to think that you're an older person who can't do more than one thing at a time. I have been car computing safely for years now. Here's the link that demonstrates this:
