  1. I am not surprised. on The Software Police vs. The CD Lawyers · · Score: 1

The software industry was much younger (both in age of the employees and the age of the company) and they were obviously more hip to new technology. The recording industry is much older and they have made ALOT of money since the phonograph was invented. I am not surprised at all that the software industry would embrace new technology and not be scared of it; while the recording industry is more likely to be scared of new technology and less likely to change.

It seems obvious to me that if they charged a reasonable amount of money (less than $30 a month or better yet give it for free with advertising) to allow people to legally download what ever they want the RIAA might make even more money. They would even have an advantage since mp3's made by people who know what they are doing are bound to sound better than the stuff you get on napster. But these people know about music (or rather how to get people to buy music even if it sucks) and they have been doing basically the same thing for over 50 years. It will probably take the recording industry a while to figure out the errors in their ways.

I guess since the problems with Bill and a certian white house intern both camps seem to be trying to say they are the most moral. Now I would give my life to defend their rights to be christian, but one thing that pisses me off is that they seem to forget that there are millions of tax paying americans that aren't christian or jewish but are moral. We should have seperation of church and state -- ones religion should have no baring on a presidential election. It also pisses me off that many people think those are the only two religions one can have.

Also it seems both parties like to blame hollywood for the nation's troubles with violence. Personally I think that is because Hollywood is an easy target. We need to be careful that this doesn't lead to censorship. It seems to me that in the past people have done some crazy stuff in the name of protecting the children. Throwing out the bill of rights is no way to protect the children.

Well I am sorry my grammar is not up to snuff. This isn't exactly a masters thesis or anything.

When I was in grad school I worked at a lab that tested the seakers for the navy. We had the entire seaker and we also used to put the windows in a wind tunnel to see if they would survive.

I beleive the sapphire is grown in a single crystal but I am not sure since I am an optical/electrical engineer and not a material science guy.

With all do respect even though you haven't heard of sapphire lenses doesn't mean they don't exist. Yes sapphire is expensive but it is VERY strong. Sapphire only passes in the midwave and not the longwave which is why they use a different window material for longwave heat seaking missiles.

  7. Re:Nah on Titanium As Cheap As Aluminum? · · Score: 2

The Russians didn't have as much steal as the US does. This means that they had to get their metal some where else. They spent a lot of time perfecting titanium production. A lot of the titanium that is now on the market is from Russia. Legend has it that during the cold war the US government secretly bought titanium on the open market that came from russia for use in it's spie planes. While our subs are made of sperate pieces of steal the Russians used to make the hulls of their nuclear subs out of one piece of titanium. So we might not be able to work with titaninum very well in the west but in the east they may be able to help us out.

On a side note aluminum is sometimes hard to work with as well. It has a low melting point and conducts heat and electricity very well. This makes it harder to spot wield than steal (which is why you don't see car bodies made of aluminum -- just engine blocks.) Notice that although aluminum is cheap aluminum bikes for example are still more expensive than steal bikes. Also aluminum tends to melt and "float" when you are working on it -- this makes working with it a pain sometimes. So although aluminum is cheap it is still more expensive for some applications. I bet the same will be true for titanium if it gets as cheap as aluminum.

  8. Re:That's all fine but... on Titanium As Cheap As Aluminum? · · Score: 2

It's called sapphire (an aluminum oxide.) In it's pure form it is clear from the visible all the way down to the midwave IR. Yes if you put impurities in it it turns pretty colors (basis for purple sapphire stones, rubys and other gem stones.) But you can see right through industrial sapphire with no problem. It is the second hardiest window material known to man. The US government uses it as a window to cover the seaker unit on a heat seaking missile. Sapphire is the only material that passes the IR used for such missiles and is strong enough to survive on the end of a missile that is going much faster than the speed of sound. The only problem is that it is difficult and expensive to make windows that are very large. If you could make your windshield out of it then it wouldn't crack as easily and your car would be cooler in the summer since sapphire doesn't block the IR. While in grad school my advisor spent a lot of time and money studying industrial sapphire. He always said it was the clear aluminum as seen in Star Trek :)

On a more serious note, I don't see how they can get upset over adult video games. Well, ok nothing they do surprises me anymore. But they shouldn't get that upset cause there have been adult video games for many different platforms in the past. These games are quite popular in Japan (where they aren't so uptight about these sorts of things.)

I believe there were adult games in the US for the 3d0 and Saturn -- probably also for the ps1. I even seem to recall hearing about some adult 2600 roms (can't confirm that since I read about that many moons ago.) Of course you can go into any adult book store and get adult video games for windows. Not that IO have ever set foot in an adult book store :)

  10. Re:Why does the Dreamcast get so much flak? on Sega Pushes ISONews, and They Push Back · · Score: 1

    A. With bleemcast the Dreamcast will also be backwardly compatable with the ps1. In the past backwardly compatable has never been a big issue in the video game industry. It didn't work with the Atari 7800, the 32X, the Genesis or the game gear (both could play Master system games) I don't see it working with the ps2. With backwardly compatable consoles you risk turning your 7800 into an expensive 2600. Note that the DC has tons of great next generation games already it will take Sony a while to catch up with it.

    B. Ah Zelda, pokemon and Mario are owned by Nintendo. Do you mean good licenses or good 1st party games? If you mean good first party games than no one can compete with Sega. Look at there dominant arcade line up. Games like Sonic, crazy taxi, NFL 2k, Shenmue, seamen, Panzer dragoon all game directly from sega. As for Sony's first party software -- it sucks! Sony is a hardware not a software company almost all of their games were made by other companies; if someone were to steal the third party support they would steal all of Sony's games. As for their licenses I have heard companies complain about Sony. Eidos had to sign an exclusive contract with Sony in order to get a favorable licenses. As soon as the contract was over they got behind the dreamcast. Sony acts like they are the only game in town -- if they keep doing that even if they aren't the only game in town they could really upset their 3rd party support.

    C. Sega did everything they could to support the saturn. Did they need to come out with Burning rangers, shining force 3 or houe of the dead in 1998? They lost money on all three of them. The problem was that Sega was too small of a company to support the 32x, sega CD, genesis, saturn, arcade, and game gear all at the same time. They tried to support all of these systems but couldn't; their marketing suffered. They should have dropped the 32x, sega CD and game gear like nintendo dropped the virtual boy. If they put the entire company behind the saturn life would be different. Oh well, that is in the past. Do you avoid Ford because of the Edsel? Why avoid Sega because of the 32x (note the saturn was a great system and did just fine against the ps1 in Japan -- a country were the games are more important then the marketing?) The fact is that the DC is a great console that has tons of great games and has a nice price.

No way Sega can compete with sony? That is what they said in 1995 about sony and nintendo. Fourtunes can change in a second in this industry. Who would have thought that Atari would flop? Who would think the genesis would break the nintendo monopoly? Don't count your chickens before they hatch. If Sony ignores the dreamcast threat they will be burried by it. Luckely for Sony they haven't ignored the dc. Do you think the ps2 would be coming out in a month if it weren't for the dreamcast? Sony was perfectly happy with the idea of selling old ps1 games for a couple more years -- it is Sega that pushed the next generation war forward.

  11. What sega is doing on Sega Pushes ISONews, and They Push Back · · Score: 3

It looks like they are trying to stop people who are posting information on how to pirate DC games. Don't think they will be able to stop it but I can't blaim them for trying, pirating sucks!

Why do people make jokes like ,"only 9 people bought dreamcasts." Yes the DC isn't close to outselling the ps1 yet but older consoles always outsell the new ones for a couple of years. Last time I looked at the sales figures the DC was doing just fine for such a new console.

The fact of the matter is that the DC is inexpensive for a next generation console, it has TONS of great games (Seamen, Sega GT, NFL 2k, SC, Crazy Taxi, Get bass, house of the dead 2, Resident evil CV, power stone 1 and 2, sonic ,etc.) and there are some awesome games on the way (Shenmue.) So what if the DC doesn't "win" it is a great console that is well worth the $150 price tag. I think the DC will do better against the other next generation consoles than people think. If it doesn't hopefully the industry has grown so much they can make money with only a small part of the market. Sega's marketing can leave something to be desired but NO ONE makes better games than Sega!!!

Guardian heros (an true classic) and Burning rangers (if it came out for the psx you would have heard of it.)

The psx was meant to be a 3d gaming platform from the start. The saturn was meant to be a 2d gaming platform but at the last minute they added the second sh2 cpu so it could do 3d games using brute force. The 3d games on the saturn were ok for their day but it was much cheaper and easier to come up with 3d games for the psx. The 2d games on the saturn are nothing short of awesome. In fact there aren't many differences between many saturn and dreamcast 2d games.

I am sure many others will post their favorite games. I didn't even mention shining force 3, die hard arcade or tomb raider. Yes tomb raider came out for the saturn first!

dye lasers are tuneable (although each dye is only tuneable over a narrow range so anyone who uses a dye laser has a shelf full of different dyes) because they have so many resonance lines. This also makes them rather inefficient. Typically you need a huge laser to pump the dye laser and in the end you don't get much energy out of the dye.

The New york times article says most laser are in the red or infrared. What have they been smoking? Recently they even came out with a blue semi conductor laser.
