  1. Working for the government on What does it take to make the Space Shuttle Fly? · · Score: 3

Anyone who has ever worked for the fed would realize how much paper work is involved in everything. I have friends who have seen them put a bar code on a mouse and keyboard and then go back to make sure the mouse hadn't been stolen every year. It would of course be MUCH cheaper to buy a new mouse each year. Luckily they don't barcode mice anymore :) Anyway, when you see how much paperwork is involeved with trivial things it is no wonder you get an insane amount of paperwork when you want to do something important. Remember when NASA lost a probe becuase they didn't convert to metric right? On the bright side, with all that checking and rechecking I bet that probably won't happen the shuttle. Of course it is easy to see that they have gone way past overkill. BTW, is it me or was the way CNN put the story in a tiny window VERY annoying?

  9. Re:Faster than light? on Negative Index of Refraction Created · · Score: 2

Ok, I think someone already mentioned that if the real part of the index of refraction (n) is less than one than light goes faster than c. The speed of a single frequency is equal to c/n. This however is just the speed of a single frequency. If you send a pulse through you will find that dispersion will slow the pulse down meaning that the pulse will ALWAYS travel less than c (pulses are made of many frequencies -- the frequencies travel at different speeds this slows down the entire pulse.) So yes a single frequency can travel in material (many metals for example have indices less than one but the also have high imaginary parts of the index of refraction which means there is a high amount of absorption.) But you can never send information faster than c so this doesn't break any laws of physics. The article wasn't very technical so it is hard to say but I imagine that there is some non-linear effect that is causing the light to bend in a strange way. I'd have to read the original article to see what is going on.

There is no way to make a perfect mirror. The mirror will still absorb a small amount of the power; this power will at least be enough to screw up your mirror so that the second blast will surely kill the missile. I believe this is some kind of chemical laser. I wonder how long you will have to wait for the next pulse? 19. Sega is like Apple? on What Will Happen to Sega? · · Score: 2

Every few months it seems some expert theorizes that sega is dead and that they will have to sell there soul (or work for MS -- same difference) to keep alive. The same thing with apple. How many times was apple supposed to die? Apple is alive (although not doing as well as others) because they can make a living by holding on to a small niche.

Hopefully the video game market has grown enough to allow someone to stay alive by only holding onto a small band of die hard fans.

Anyway, apple isn't doing as well as other companies but they aren't dead -- and will probably live on way into the future. Likewise Sega isn't dead either. Yes they are loosing money but the DC really hasn't been out long enough to really start rolling in the dough and the market for consoles in Japan isn't what it used to be.

Anyway, don't panic and don't count the DC out yet. It is games that sell consoles and I think we will all agree (except maybe for the diehard sony fanboys) that RIGHT NOW Sega has got the games. If you have the great software sometimes you don't need the most powerful hardware.

Also notice how the article never once mentioned coin-ops. How can you even talk about Sega without mentioning that they dominate the arcades? I think the fall of the arcade has as much lead to Sega's recent trouble as anything else. Also is everyone else looking forward to Shen Mu as much as I am :)

Let's not panic here. Yes, there may be sega games on other consoles. In fact there already are a couple of sega games for the gameboy (no sonic games and I believe sega didn't publish them.) But they aren't killing the dreamcast -- I am sure they will still support it until ps3 is coming out. They are betting their entire future on the internet and the strength of their software. This is not a bad thing because their cutting edge games are the strongest part of Sega. The DC isn't going to die, and the next generation war is only just begining.

  21. Re:PS2? on The PS2 Experience · · Score: 1

Why didn't sega include DVD? Maybe it is because in Japan ps2 software sales are down since people are buying the ps2 as a DVD player. Companies make up for the cost of the console by selling games. No games no money! Also Sony can't make AAA titles like Sega can -- if third party companies get pissed off by lack of sales and stop making games for the ps2 sony is totally screwed. Sega can almost support a console all by themselve (almost.) Could it also be because they wanted the price advantage -- CD players are cheaper. Plus I am not sure if the ps2 will really benefit from the larger storage space. Will developers use the extra space on a DVD to make a longer game or to add more FMVs? I guess time will tell. Why doesn't the DC have an mp3 decoder by default? They said they are going to release a VMU that will hold saved data AND play mp3s. Plus it probably won't be long before the web browser they have will be able to play downloaded mp3s (if it doesn't already.) As for why it won't play cd-roms full of mp3s? Well, I wasn't aware that the ps2 could play mp3s either. And if you have the pc and cd burner to make cd-roms full of mp3s than why the hell don't you play the mp3s on your pc?

BTW what do you have against Sega anyway. Do you think the ps2 would be out already if it weren't for the DC? I think not! Do you want sony to be a monopoly like microsoft? If you do than you are an idiot!

Nintendo because of the virtual boy? Ford because of the Edisol?

Anyway, on paper the ps2 may be more powerful (well duh, it is newer) but the DC has TONS of great games. Not just remakes of older games with better graphics. Were are talking truely creative games here like Shenmue of seman. Sega is more of a software company than a hardware company after all. I may be moderated down for saying this (that is why I turned off the +1 bonus thingy) but right now the DC seems to be the better choice. Graphics that look prettty much the same (ok eventually ps2 will look better but that may take a while) the DC has more high quality games and is half the price (a tenth the price if you have to buy the ps2 on ebay.) I say get the DC now. Even if no more games come out, the games out now are more than worth the $150. Wait till the insanity and price drop, as well as more games to come out before getting the ps2.

Oh, and the Saturn wasn't that bad either. Anyone who actually had one and modded it to play import games would realize that. It was very powerful (twice the raw cpu power as the ps1 with the same speed cd-rom and amount of ram) but very hard to program for (sound like another console we know?) Neither was the sega cd. Any ps1 buff who claims that the storage size of the cd makes the ps1 better than the n64 should realize that the sega cd at least looked good on paper. It is just that add-ons don't work in the console industry (and sega is to small of a company to support the genny, sega cd, 32x, saturn, game gear AND coin ops at the same time) -- but it took the 32x and sega cd to figure out the problems with add-ons. Ok, the 32x was a bad idea -- I'll give you that. But the virtual boy was even worse of an idea.
