Forget about the fact that our jails are filled to the brim with drug dealers, let's go after the mp3ers. So let's take the thousands of people who use napster and lock them all up. Sure, we have plenty of room for them all.
What about all the warez sites and people who give out illegal copies of software? Why don't we just throw everyone in America in jail because I am sure we have all done something wrong at some point.
So what. The index of refraction of the light is less than one in that chamber. Big freacking deal. The index of refraction in many metals is less than one. This is old news. Individual sine waves may travel faster than c but if you take a look at the speed of the entire packet (i.e. how fast information travels) you will probably find it is much less than c. Anyone who has studied undergrad optics should know about this. My guess is that what is cool is how much smaller than one the index of refraction is in this chamber and that the absorption isn't very high.

Ok, I actually, read the ieee article, and I am still not excited. If everything works out than I will be as happy as anyone. I will not have to eat my words because I have never said that there is no way that they can make it. All I am saying is they STILL have a large uphill battle and they are still quite far from even turning a profit.
So they claim to be two months or so away from a product. They still don't have one! Will their be yield problems? Will they really run as fast as the expect? Maybe, maybe not.
Let's say they come up with a chip that blows everything away. Sometimes that still doesn't mean they will sell. Everyone knows that even though intel x86 chips aren't as good as AMD everyone still buys intel. Better engineering doesn't mean better profits.
If they are even half as smart as all the hype makes them seem then I am sure that they realize how far away they still are and that this is no easy path.
If you look at the history of video games one thing you will plainly see is that the 800 pound gorilla has no advantage in the next generation, and the last generation always outsells the next generation for quite a while. Of all the consoles out there, the psx has the most units sold (except for the gameboy and pc that are in other markets and older consoles that don't count anymore.) Of course they are going to sell the most games and seem to be the console to beat until the next generation gets well established.
The snes and genesis outsold the psx for quite awhile if you will remember. It seemed like they were the consoles to beat for quite a while. That is why Sega didn't over sell the saturn and they did the whole add-on thing to the genesis. It seems stupid now but to many it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Sega and nintendo were the 800 pound gorillas in the 16-bit area and sony was a new comer with a big question mark. Yet look what happened.
It seems obvious that the dreamcast is the console to beat -- at least in america. As for the lack of TV adds -- if sega is smart they are probably waiting for the ps2 to come out before they really fight back with tv comercials. Right now they are the only game in town with 128 build graphics they just need to build the library and slowly build the market share. Even if Sega is going to "win" (what ever that means) don't expect them to over take the psx in sales anytime soon.
Some people think the ps2 will "win" because the ps2 is more powerful even though it is a pain to program for. This is BS because the saturn came from the 800 pound gorilla of the 16 bit era -- and even though it was more powerful the saturn was a pain to program for (same amount of ram, same speed CD rom but the Saturn had twice the raw cpu power than the psx -- ok it is a little more complicated than that but if you look at the specs they seem pretty evenly matched.)
No one can tell for sure what is going to happen in the future. But the DC had the biggest launch in US video game history and in the west at least the DC is clearly the console to beat in the early 21st century. No hype here just a lot of kick butt games and the only console with real market share.

jpeg200 is fine, but I am waiting for mpeg200. Or how about music compression based on wavelets instead of fft (although I have nothing against fft -- Fourier was a great guy:^) Could we soon have napster type sights trading copies of The Matrix? It will be intersting to see what happens in the future.
Do what I did, read the version that was cached by google.com. It is a little old but you can at least have an idea of what's going on.Course even that version seems a bit slow.
"If you are still on a socket 7 motherboard you should really call that machine done and build a new box."
Why? What is wrong with socket 7? Ok, it isn't as fast as the super duper expenisive chips you can buy now, but amd k63's are pretty fast and are great for a large number of applications. Spending lots of $$ just to get the fastest cpu ever five minutes is quite idiotic. Get the chip that most fits your needs and for many people that still fits in a socket 7.
I have seen prices on new PC's. 300-400 for a mid range athlon and mobo. Throw in another hundred or so for a mid range graphics card (buying the fastest cpu is just throwing your money away.) The only computer worth anything is one you build yourself!
Oh sure, version 1 is open to the public. I am sure microsoft is already working on their own version of the human genome that will require you to buy windows before you can have kids. Keep the human genome an open standard!
Quality on digital recordings is not always perfect. You have never had a CD skip before? They try to put error correction in, but it is still possible to miss a bit or two every now and then. I bet the quality depends on the number of total gigabytes and number of megabyets per minute they can squeeze on a vhs cassette. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a lot. Ho many gigabytes can you get on a standard pc tape backup?
As everyone knows, on the internet you are always only three clicks away from a lesbian chat room. Everything is linked to everything. The MPAA is bascially trying to outlaw the entire internet. Don't think they are going to do it. Can't wait for my apex DVD player to come in!
I guess you are trying to be sarcastic, but I agree with what you said. Maybe you should stay away from the pinto (unless you are thinking of bombing a government building by backing into it) but other than that I say small cars rule. My Tercel kicks butt! Sure I am stuck doing 85mph instead of 105mph on the beltway, but the thing is dirt cheap to run and fun to drive. The smart thing to do is get the minimum car or computer or whatever that fits your needs. If an apple II fits your needs, then by all means you should stick with the apple II. All to often there are guys that are insecure with the size of certian things (or girls with envy) who feel the need to get the fastest computer or the biggest car in order to compensate for it. That is why I refer to SUVs as penis mobiles. Yes, there are people who do need the 1ghz athlon (for work or whatever.) But some of us are secure enough to be able to get by with a cyrix. Oh, and if you want to play games get a dreamcast for crying out loud. It's only $200 (free if you sign up for sega net) and NFL 2k kicks the butt of every game on the pc (not to mention sonic, crazy taxi, Soul Calibur, resident evil CV, NHL 2k, Sega GT -- just go and get a dreamcast ok?)
Yeah, but you can get an athlon mobo and chip for like $300. Check http://www.pricewatch.com If you already have the sdram, video card and everything else then that is a pretty good deal!
First, I get upset at the stupid people who actually buy stuff from spammers. If no one EVER bought stuff then the spammers wouldn't make any money and they would stop. Because a few stupid people make spamming profitable we all must be spammed. Second, I find junk mail and phone calls much more annoying than spam email. Junk mail I have to throw out (which is bad for the enviroment) and phone calls always come during dinner. Yet people complain about junk email more than junk snail mail. I can just hit the delete key for spam email -- wish I could do that for other things.
I am pretty sure the Japanese ones were water cooled but many of the American (made in China) ones were not. I think the US ones just have big cooling fans and heat sinks. Well, wait until I get bored enough (and replacement DC's get cheap enough) and I will take mine apart to be sure:)
Makes sense that it would be water cooled. See how compact the DC is? That's a lot of heat producing chips in a very small package.
Makes sense.
