I read the whole of Joyce's "A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man" on a monitor and my eyes didn't start to bleed even though my monitor isn't very good. That's not to say that I don't prefer to read papery books and magazines (and pulped trees might actually be a better form of long term storage and information retrieval than digital stuff) but it is possible.
For me the killer app that made me want Linux was the Gimp. Even though I got the impression (though I can't imagine where from) that it was a bit difficult to use, the idea of a fully featured graphics package for £50 with a free operating system attached was compeling.
A mod for Q3 that implements server side prediction. I play it with my 56k 500mhz 128mb machine all the time.

actually you can leave out both the ftp password and username if you want. You just have to fill it in when you upload content.
