Farscape Finale Tonight

Sim9 writes "Just a reminder that Farscape, the critically acclaimed sci-fi television show, is having its *series* finale Friday night! Showing times are 8PM and 12AM ET/PT (7PM and 11PM Central) on SciFi Channel. Catch this great show one last time before it's gone!" Thanks to everyone involved in producing this show. One of my favorites. All I have left on Sci Fi now is SG1.

For those of you not in the know, O5 has 6 episodes left on their first season. They aired the "season finale" months ago and have been holding back giving fans the final 6 episodes they were promised. These missing episodes have aired in the UK, leaving the US fans to various P2P networks for crappy VCD versions of the last few eps.

So, not to beat down your attempt, but I doubt it will get more than the standard corporate P.R. BS from Showtime. Many Odyssey 5 fans have sent numerous letters, made numerous phone calls, and all we get is the standard "we love hearing feedback and forward it to the appropriate department." The budget could've been cut, but there was a reasonable expectation that a version of Farscape with a much lower budget would be of lower quality and would lose fans, since the show wouldn't be allowed to have any real style to it any more (fewer muppets, less special effects, no big three to six episode finales with sky-high production values). That left them with a situation where they could do absolutely nothing to make the show profitable.

I used to argue that Sci-Fi was making a mistake because Farscape was what got their little network mentioned several times a year in TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, and other entertainment magazines, but now that Taken and Children of Dune have appeared not only in TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly, but also magazines like Time and Newsweek, there really isn't any reason for Sci-Fi to keep Farscape.

So it's obviously pretty high.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think it was like $2.2 million per episode. By contrast, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a network show which films in Los Angeles and has cast members that have now had successful film careers, costs a little less than that while drawing much higher ratings due to being on a broadcast network. They've made Farscape as cheap as possible by filming it in Australia with actors that aren't well-known elsewhere, but it still came out really high.

(There's a James Surowiecki piece about this in the Feb. 17/24 New Yorker, but it doesn't seem to be archived online.)

In short, there's no way that a non-random sample of 5000 families can give fine-grained statistical accuracy for a population approaching 300 million, and more importantly, Nielsen people-meter ratings don't account for local or even regional ratings, which are of tremendous interest to advertisers. So they rely on paper viewing diaries mailed out four times a year to 2.5 million people. This is known as "sweeps," during which many stations program juicy one-offs that aren't representative of their year-round offerings. Only 1/3d of the diaries get filled out and returned, and even that sample is obviously tainted, due to cooperator bias and reliance on possibly faulty memories. David Poltrack, CBS' head of research, is quoted in the New Yorker article as saying "The affiliates' ratings are likely higher under the current system than they would be under a different system, so they have no incentive to change." In local areas where people meters have been tested, network affiliates' ratings have invariably fallen.

So no, the ratings system does not work and has not been updated and does not make good business sense.

Yes Farscape was typically rebroadcast. Unfortunately after the first year or so it ended up just being rebroadcast on the same night an hour after the first show, not making it easy for a larger audience to get involved. Plus since none of the episodes were available on tape/dvd you couldn't exactly run to the store and get caught up with the story arc.

People gripe and complain about "oh the story arc killed it" "it was too hard to get into if you didn't know the background", etc. You don't hear people saying that about '24' (1st season available at any blockbuster. Released almost immediately after the end of the first season.)

SciFi has moved towards lower budget projects and looking for mass appeal. Dune was a prime example of low budget. While some people threw some money into this thing they skimped on all the wrong parts. Sets and costume design were lackluster and the mix of good actor here horrible actor in the supporting role gave a very unbalanced feel. The mass hype, continual reminder of how bad Lynch's version was, and constant demand that this was going to be THE DUNE - just like the book - left some fans feeling a little betrayed when the show actually aired.

Moves like this give patrons who have watched for years a feeling of abandonment. Especially when SciFi starts running DreamTeam, ScareTactics, BraveHeart, Scream, IKWYDLS/ISKWYDLS, Halloween, etc. ---- not even close to scifi. When you alienate your fan base you lose. Even if you gain a million more viewers you lose because all of those new viewers are transitory. They have no brand loyalty because you produce nothing to be loyal to. They could care less about the merchandise you sell because to them you're filler while the football game is on commercial or because they cancelled tonights ER due to Bush speaking. In essence the channel becomes a parking lot for all the crap not shown elsewhere.

For awhile SciFi seemed to have a good run. They came out with some new and very interesting series - some did well and others stunk. In the end Farscape was the only one left and now it's gone. It got rave reviews and a solid fanbase. Unfortunately they really really dropped the ball on merchandising the product. There were millions to gain by proper merchandising. Quickly released DVD sets for special episodes and seasons, extended box sets, etc. Posters, prints, statuettes, pictures, transcripts, graphic novels. EVENTUALLY they did this. Unfortunately most of it came too late to generate either interest or profit. Timing means alot. And when a customer has to wait two years to get what they want they tend to get absent minded about why they wanted it in the first place.

There was nothing there that said "BY ME", "PAY FOR MORE SHOWS", "WE WANT A PROFIT". They wasted more advertising space pushing their own brand name then promoting product.

The toys at the store were childish (for a show whose fanbase did not consist of children). DVD's were nowhere to be found at local stores/rentals, likewise any other media that might make someone say "HMMMM that looks interesting".

I can't believe with all the money that was spent and all the talent brought to bare that they didn't have some forethought on the merchandising. I mean most of it appeared to be geared towards the 8-13 year old market, which isn't exactly the market watching the show, right?

Somehow they managed to pick up SG1 and they'll retain some of the old viewers from that and maybe keep some of the readers attention by doing specials like Dune, RiverWorld, and Children of Dune. They might keep a few others hanging waiting on Galactica. Unfortunately they're just as likely to alienate even more viewers with those shows as we can see with the mixxed reviews from Dune (I saw almost a 50/50 split on

(Well, ok, the actress playing Ghani' was nice to look at, but otherwise ....) They age the twins about 10 years in the miniseries, which is acceptable. The guy who plays Bijaz was good. Overall, the series is a not so gentle reminder that Paul is not well cast: he strikes me as more of a football player than a supermentat with prescience. Edric and the main Scytale identity were ok. Alia was just a scenery chewer. Weniscia was Susan Sarandon's most mediocre performance since Rocky Horror. Examples of their lack of subtlety: they retime Weniscia's expulsion to coincide with Farad'n's arrival on Arrakis, thus collapsing his entire development into a few seconds. The sandtrout never manage to cover Leto entirely, and yet he survives a Coriolis storm (one wonders how he ran so fast when only his arm was integrated into the sandworm bodies). Ghanima's self-hypnosis was ignored. There were lines about Hayt's eyes kept in the series that related to his Tleilaxu eyes, even though they never mention the fact that Hayt has Tleilaxu eyes!!! But then you never hear the name Hayt - he is called Duncan throughout. They collapse the mid-novel scene in which Alia recognizes that Paul is the Preacher with the Preacher's death scene, managing somehow to motivate Alia's return upstairs for her to fall on her crysknife rather than pitch herself out the window. Mercifully, they never mention the fact that Leto is going to live 4,000 years and turn into a sandworm, so I think we can rest assured there will be no God Emperor of Dune miniseries (frankly Herbert's novels dropped precipitously in quality after Children of Dune, perhaps because of the long hiatus, and CoD itself isn't as good as Dune Messiah, being far more uneven. Chapterhouse:Dune and the other Dune book whose name escapes me were OK, but nowhere near the genuinely literary quality of the original).

Farscape 4.22: a good bit, except they should have done one of two things: either a. cut the last 127 seconds, or b. cut the line about retrieving the aliens and the "TO BE CONTINUED" and, horribile dictu, end the series on a tragic note. There's no way they'll ever resolve the cliffhanger, but maybe, just maybe they'll get a movie.

A bad adaptation of a good sequel to a great novel (Dune is a great novel by any measure) isn't as satisfying to watch as a good episode of a good TV series. Instead of wasting their money on remaking Dune poorly, and making that silly cross between the X-Files and CE3K, Taken, and making, o my God, a remake of Battlestar Galactica, and making - my fingers shake as I type this - a series out of the Tremors movies, movies so bad they make me nostalgic for Teen Wolf 2 - not to mention the "fake cross between psychics and psychoanalysis, Jon Edwards", the "silly excuse for lots of lesbian sex fantasy commercials, Dream Team", and "bad ripoff of Sixth Sense with Adrian Paul", none of which have anything to do with SF, they should have just stuck with a show that was beginning to build a strong following in a solid demographic.

That's what I meant by the "at least Buffy got to continue". We knew that Buffy would be continuing, so the "Thanks for five great years (even though we're discarding you because we don't like you anymore)" was just sort of insulting, rather than a full-on "Fuck you, fanboys/girls".

I look at the WB as saying "Okay, you have your show... but try to wiggle out of THIS ending!!"

Actually, that's not the case AT ALL. The Buffy seasons are planned well in advance and The WB had nothing to do with the fifth season finale. The writers and producers of the show claim that they had a pretty solid idea of the structure of the fifth and sixth seasons by around the second or third seasons. It looked like The WB was trying to screw up the show as it left, but apparently the idea had been set in stone for some time.

The acting was horrible and so many events were un or under explained. I TiVo'd the first half of the show and watched it, not knowing that it was in two parts, while the second part was airing. When I discovered the fact, I was releived that I wouldn't have to watch the second part.

But this show IS called "Farscape" which refers to the IASA program that Crighton was in. To me, it would only make sense that he still (in some way, shape or form) be involved with the series in order for it to still be called this. Otherwise, it should probably be considered a spin-off.

I was just commenting that a show that is flexible and can change its format seems to be able to last longer. Inidentally, I think that Dr. Who went through eight 'incarnations' and then each doctor had multiple sets of companions. The Dr and the companions drove the show to the point where it could vary its audience. The show could vary its story arcs from historical drama to hard sci-fi with a bit of fantasy thrown in. The BBC does a lot of historical drama so good sets and costumes can be 'borrowed' from their stores.

A show like Farscape is more constricted, however it continued to be inventive within its format. It should have been allowed to run to the full five seasons and I think everyone would have been happy. Then it could have been allowed to finish properly, with maybe a few movies later.

Farscape is an interesting and ambitious show. Yes, it frightens off some viewers but captures some from groups with potentially high spending power that aren't easily reached by other television.

I don't know about you, but I find a lot of the other current Sci-Fi shows rather lame and only Farscape has really held my attention since ST:DS9. Becasue of plot complexities, I think that I have seen 100% of Farscape but I know I didn't see all of DS9.

Even the ending I can deal with ... a tragic ending is just as valid as a happy one. Since we have enough happy endings, this provided a MUCH more memorable end. The feelings I felt at the end of the episode were as strong as the ending of a good book.

The only thing that killed it for me was the following:

    * To be continued ... couldn't they have edited that out? It -felt- like a series ending until that. Hell, with John "dead" as it appears at the ending, it even explains why we don't hear about him ever again.

    * That insipid "The SciFi channel thanks ..." blah blah ... an obvious attempt to seem gracious about the show to we fans who wanted it to continue. SciFi would have done very well to have not even mentioned it. If they were that thankful, the show would still be on. SCREW them.

As others have mentioned, all I have left from SciFi is SG1 and originals like Children of Dune and Riverworld (I hope). SG1 will probably be gone after next season, so that's one more. I hope they at least do more originals, but lordy, they can't be THAT much cheaper than a good story-based series. Otherwise, SciFi is dead to me.
