Dear God, go grab tpconfig... My laptop's touchpad was unusable until I shut that idiot tap-to-click thing off...
tpconfig is a Linux CLI utility to set params for your touchpad. Some things to note that didn't seem too well documented to me: 1. Although it is documented that you cannot reconfigure the touchpad while X is running, you can simply switch to another virtual console, set whatever features you like, and then switch back to your X console. 2. On my Dell, suspending turns the fool feature back on. Lovely. Once the box comes back up, I switch consoles, fix it, and return to working...

Dude, I don't know whether you meant "deer" or "dear", but I'm not too sure I want to hear that much about somebody else's sex life...
Nothing like mixing metaphors before the cows come home...:)
LeadTek has a Geforce3 Ti200 with 128M of memory
for under $200. I just got one of these a
couple of days ago. Heaviest video card I've ever
owned. Looks great in windows. (I did windows
first because I knew it would take longer). If anybody's curious, mail me; I should have it
working under linux tonite if nothing comes up
after work.
funny story: I upgraded my mobo as well to
a soyo dragon+... That thing does NOT turn off
power to the keyboard or ps/2 mouse port when it
powers down. I finally had to unsolder that idiot
taillight on my MS optical mouse so I could get
some sleep.
Ok, anon coward. Ask me.
I'm not going to name names now, but I used
to work for a company that developed embedded
hardware devices. At least they had a method for
upgrading these devices from the host PC, but
some versions were old or borked because they
were development versions. These units were
essentially not field-upgradeable. a complete
"pita" and PR disaster when these things needed to be fixed. feel free to email for specifics.
At this point, I would not design any embedded
system without a safe way to do field upgrades.
(What the hell is wrong with the lameness filter?)
I posted an order yesterday and I already have
a FEDEX tracking #. Delivery tomorrow.
This is the 2nd time I've ordered from them.
I was happy the first time with the quality...
That's not insightful. Did you play stupid when someone told you what a "steering wheel" was?
Maybe you didn't have a hard time learning because the term was already in common use. I bet it wasn't always that way. Now fast forward 10 years... I wonder if "desktop" and "hard-drive" will be in common use. I know people 60 years old who now know these terms, and they have nothing to do with the field... Just like you don't really have anything to do with the automotive industry.
Sorry for the extremely overworked computer as car metaphor, but here it actually fits. You can actually substitute *any* new technology with its corresponding terminology.

There's something really stupid here. Not too sure if anyone's pointed it out yet... but...
The "desktop" is not a physical device. But these "usability" experts want to force users to be limited by arbitrary rules how things work in the realworld... Dumb. Especially as so-called experts, I would expect that they understand the difference in ease-of-use and ease-of-learning.
Usually for a given system, there is a tradeoff between these categories.
That makes them far too hot for life as we know it. Not only would any hypothetical human traveler to this planet die but the planet's intense heat would quickly melt any coins in the person's pockets, the scientists said.
Yeah, that's what I worry about when I'm somewhere where (1) I can't breathe and (2) has winds that can rip me to shreds in seconds and (3) has no solid surface for 100's of miles beneath me...
Gaah! My quarters!
Look at microtest's page... They sold off their
Network Appliances and Storage(NAS) division.
There are 2 lines of "Zerver" products. One
DiscZerver went to xstore. The 2nd FileZerver is
now held be a company called NetZerver. No idea
who had this thing first, but NetZerver's home
page lists Linux as the OS. Still no source
though. Who actually developed this?
Come up with a reasonable reason. Anybody.
The only one that I've seen that comes
close was the "we don't want our users
printing 300+ page docs..."
That's not legit. That probably needs to
be done on the print server... As for copywrite
and Adobe? I still have fair use. (or I *should*
dammit)... Adobe and the authors already have copywrite laws to protect their work. What about
laws to protect my fair use??? And it's already
been brought up, but I think the example of the
blind guy that *needs* to have those kinds of
abilities outweighs overprotecting these files.
Come on! I already **have** the file. At worst,
I can run the whole damn OS in an emulator, freeze
the thing, and rip bytes out of memory...
oops... I guess I forgot my rant tags.... sorry.
I was a co-op, too.... And the same thing happened to me. What finally started changing things for me was when I started trying to change things.... I don't mean random.5ass stuff. Find a way to make you job better/easier in some way. For me, that meant automating a tedious process that previously had to be done by hand. Make sure that whatever you do, follow these:
1. It shouldn't cost extra money. The extra storage we required was found spare on unused machines.
2. It shouldn't detract from "normal" duties. YMMV.
3. Present boss/superior/etc with a completed solution or at least a complete plan..5ass solutions, activities don't work.
4. Your plan should do something substantial.
I can't think of anything else immediately.
Has anyone actually tried to D/L the linux
version yet?
You get a pretty button that's just a GIF at
the end of it.(give name, logging in,etc...)
BROKEN!
