If you install WinXP Volume licenced edition with the famous FCKGW RHQQ2 (Genius!) serial number then install IE critical updates from Windowsupdate, the computer will start crashing on an occasional basis

Not true. That serial (released with a pirated version of XP that apparently came out before the official release) was disabled when SP1 came out. I have ... a friend who was using that serial, and sure enough, SP1 refused to recognize it. Check here for a short article on the topic.

  2. For caddies, DVD may be the way to go on Guide to Digital Preservation from NIST · · Score: 1

Around the office, we have some old CD-ROMs for IBM RS/6000 machines which require caddies. Well, we recently purchased some new DVD writers from IBM, and damned if they didn't use caddies as well.

The DVD caddies are slightly different from the ones used in the old CD-ROMs (and the two are not interchangeable), but they're close enough to make it obvious that IBM is resurrecting an old concept for the future.

In typical fashion, though, the DVD writers from IBM will only accept DVDs in a caddy, while the new servers we got from them (with DVD drives), will only accept DVDs without a caddy -- and of course, the DVDs that IBM sell come in a caddy that cannot be opened and closed (like the old CD-ROM cases). I had to go to Future Shop to get an openable case!

Speaking of security, it's odd that their site mentions Wi-fi for the pod, but doesn't mention WEP support. I can't imagine a single /. user (hopefully) who doesn't have 128-bit WEP, not to mention MAC filtering, and maybe more. If the HomePod doesn't support at least WEP, there's no way I'm opening up my network to the world just so that I can have some music to go with my cereal.

With decent security, it might be fun to hook the HomePod to my cellphone, connect to my home w/s over the Internet, and play my music anywhere in the city.

    Very decent security.

  4. Magnetite occurs naturally in the body, so ... on Detoxing With Magnets for Fun and Profit · · Score: 5, Interesting

    According to http://www.rfsafe.com/research/rf_radiation/therma l_hazards/intro.htm:

Magnetite is found in certain bacteria and in the cells of many animals, including human beings.

Does this mean that this treatment would also pull out any bacteria in the body that contains magnetite?
