What does this mean for computing? It seems to me that this has enormous implications all along the chain of how we think about computer design, logic circuits, and programming. Am I wrong in understanding this as a fundamental change in how things will/might work?
I've worked as a tech on a number of ECR and POS systems. Most modern cash registers (I'm speaking with direct knowledge of Samsung and Casio, machines) are pretty low-priced and can export their data in delimited formats. Most cash register retailers will charge extra for the software that allows you to do this, but it's not a great deal more. If you know what you're doing, you can grab the raw data yourself and make it behave in whatever way you'd like.
These aren't the super-expensive cash registers either. Even ones that can be bought at your local office supply store will be capable of this (much to specialized cash register retailers' chagrin) Just look for it in the feature set on the box.
I've been a big fan of the Fallout series. And I do hear they've got "something in the works"
I'd also like to see something done with the System Shock title.
Star Control. Nuff said.
Also, there was this game I played obsessively on the Atari ST. I think it was called Sundog, or something like that. You carried cargo to different systems, each system had different prices in their market (if they had a market). You could upgrade your ship and its weapons with different parts. You'd be attacked and go into a 1st person shooter mode. Very advanced for it's day. I'd like to see that in today's market.

Good luck

Fuck you Sci Fi, and fuck you, Vivendi.
I'm enough of a Farscape geek to say, yeah, I cried at the end, and then I screamed.
As of tonight, I'm no longer a Cox digital cable subscriber.
