Damn right.. for americans it is. If you want your copy of Kohan cheaper, hop over to www.canux.com. After tax and delivery it comes to $69 to deliver it here. Since he uses canada post it wouldn't be much more to get it into the states. If I bought it directly from Loki like I would prefer in this case I would pay the following:

    Game: $75 CDN
Shipping: Approx $10 (give or take)
GST on above: $5.95 (applied at the border and paid to the post office when delivered).

That puts the game at about $90.95 after taxes in canadian dollars.

I was going to buy my first Linux based game when Kohan came out. This frusterates me. I'm sure they will be around for this release, but UGH!

Perhaps its time to change the business model. Maybe they should focus on becoming a service for game manufacturers that ports the games for a fee but doesn't sell them?

Another thought would be to get away from the damn 1st person shooters. I'm sick of them. Its getting old. Perhaps they could get in with a windows gaming company before a game is released (wishful thinking..) and simultaneously release.

Another thought would be to release bare bones versions with a CD only and a PDF of the manual for a lower price. Kohan is bloody expensive for me to buy in Canada (so I'm not going to purchase it from Loki). Maybe they should throw a wad of cash that they don't have into marketing with large chains. Up here Business Depot carries Linux of various flavours.. maybe they could get in there.

What it comes down to is this is/will be a big kick to the crotch of linux gaming. :(

But $50 USD?? By the time that gets shipped to me, duty, GST and the good honest reaming that the the good ol canadian beaver will get from good ol uncle sam at the banks. This game will cost me somewhere in the area of $90 CDN. I can run down to Business Depot and buy a win32 version for much less including gas. This frustrates the hell out of me because there is no way the wife of this poor sap will let him live if she see's this on next months VISA statement. :(

www.mls.ca is the site I used to hunt down my house. You will never really get rid of the estate agents. They get paid to watch your ass. They also give your home more exposure when its on the market. All this costs money. Personally I'd rather pay some schmuck who knows what they are doing to do it then stick a 'house for sale by owner' sign on my doorstep.

Why did I use mls.ca? Simple. I don't like sales people. This limits my time with the necessary evil of dealing with them.

Is it because there is something wrong with our marriage?

I'd like to think that our relationship is pretty open. If I piss her off I hear about it... oh god do I hear about it (stupid comments I've made 7 years ago get brought up when its appropriate). What it comes down too is that you need to discuss this with your partner.. you've got to live with them for the rest of your life (if your lucky) so communication is the key. For some people it may just be kinky.. kinda like safe swinging...

I met my wife online about 7 years ago.. back when a BBS was online and unless you where on a multinode system real time chat didn't happen. That was the best thing that ever happened to me.. We've lived together for 6 years.. been married for 3.5 years and are starting a family. So online romances can be a good thing.. I knew my wife 10 times better on the day we met in person then I've known anyone after 6 months or more.

If you feel you need to vent sexually this way, why not arrange a time to go chat with your spouse.. hell, I fire up ICQ at least 2-3 times a day just to sexually torment my wife so she's ripe for the pickin's by the time i get home :)

When you use Netscape you are getting the product you prefer at the tradeoff price of ads. Sure they sell it at Staples(TM), but how many people are going to shell out $40+ bucks for a web browser when you can use IE or a downloaded copy for free. They know this and are capitalizing on it. Personally speaking I don't use any of the crap they offer.. I turn off the "My Sidebar", don't use Messenger (to avoid the ad in my preview pane) and I redefine my homepage on the first startup of Netscape. What this leaves me with is a nicely bloated web browser just like the rest.

Back to why they do it.. profit.. its quite simple.. they aren't gonna make a dime off netscape if they don't shove their corporate identity in your face. I honestly don't blame them. Your average internet user likes these things... the average Slashdot reader doesn't. Thats about 1 or 2 million of us.. and about 40 Million plus of them.. you do the math.

The major problem is spitting packets over a public network. The only secure way to do it would be to create a private ATM type network for voting only.

The initial capitol needed for this would be high, but the keosks would be upgradeable and programmable from one central location in each region. The person would vote, the vote would go out over the private network and votes would be tallied immediately at breaknet speeds. Because this is so quick and easy it would allow for very inexpensive referendums... the keosks could be used for regional/citywide elections as well, thus saving each city several hundred thousand + dollars per year.
