    The value of the company’s inventory climbed to $1.03 billion last quarter, up from $618 million a year earlier. Back in mid-2008, when the BlackBerry was still a hot seller and RIM’s stock traded at an all-time high of $147.55, the figure was less than $500 million.

    Nowhere in that article does it suggest that 100% of the current inventory will have to be written off. A terrible writeup from someone who clearly has reading comprehension problems.

    If you want to see something that is a fairer guide to academic achievement, the National Assessment of Educational Progress is a much better guide. Iowahawk used it to take down a weak argument about ACT/SAT scores during the public kerfluffle about the efficacy of union vs. non-union teachers.

    False. A scheme to prohibit people from generating carbon dioxide would necessarily result in an enormous spy regime. Think of the War On Drugs times ten.

    It is interesting that you mention this in relation to a story about Heartland Institute. It was this exact argument that made it apparent to me that there was a hand on the tiller of the anti-global warming movement.

    Is it really so difficult to imagine that people simply do not want to see an enormous government intrusion into literally every energy use decision they make, or are made on their behalves by others?

    Implying that somehow this is all a conspiracy theory is unbelievably false.

    Because here is how modern American politics work: the state gets expanded at every possible opportunity. This is what the Democrats want (so long as they can get more entitlements) and what the Republicans want (so long as they can get free rein to send the military into new wars). The only question is, what gets expanded?

    As I have said elsewhere, it's pretty obvious that the government plans on listening to everything going on on the Internet. This is just legal formalism.
