  1. Interesting choice of analogy. on MS Wants To Outlaw Open Source: "Threatens" the "American Way" · · Score: 1

There are some people who's voices count more then others. CmdrTaco can be said to speak more "athoritativly" for /. then pretty much anyone else. These comments were apparently made by "Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating-system chief, Jim Allchin" who is most definitly not "Joe Random, Junior MS Developer". If he is a senior executive comments he makes to a journalist should be thought of as having some relationship to MS corporate position.

  2. Nobody said MS would collapse. on ESR: Microsoft Could Collapse In 6 Months (updated) · · Score: 1

What I read was ESR suggesting that the MS monopoly on the PC operating system would collapse. Microsoft as an entity is a very long way from collapsing.

Note to /. readers: Don't judge a book by its cover and don't judge a /. article by the title assigned by the editors. Read the article then comment.

  3. It's not because it's a trade secret, on The Impact on Open Source of Stolen Microsoft Code · · Score: 1

It is because Microsoft holds the copyright to this code. They have not licenced these (hypothetical) developers to use it. It would be the same legal argument that would be made if someone tried to incorporate GPL'd code into a proprietary poduct.

  4. I worded my comments poorly on When Background Checks Go Wrong... · · Score: 1

I realised to late that I used "you" to describe the "guilty parties". I did not intend to suggest that it was you- Syberghost's - personal decision, allthough that is definatly what my comment said. I apollagise.

I have worked in situations like that before, I understand the powerless situation of a lowly peon.

But the way your employer handled it still really sucked.

  5. The blame is not only on the deputy ... on When Background Checks Go Wrong... · · Score: 2

Your company knew there were special circumstances and yet you still fired him?

This seems to be even stupider than the original mistake. Blindly following policy in the face of reason is insane.

You affected this person's livelyhood. How did this fellony-in-technicallity affect this employees ability to do the job? You say he did a good job, and he was not at fault and yet he was still fired? A real shame.

And I suppose if he ever was stupid enough to use you for a reference you would say "Oh we had to fire him because he's a convicted felon"?

    Poorly handled I'd say.

  6. Sounds like a good use for the lrp. on The Home Of The Future · · Score: 1

I'll sure as heck be filtering out all inbound and outbound data from my appliances. I don't want any body to know how (in)frequently I vacum the stairs and don't see much use in my fridge reminding me I should eat better. I have a mother for that.

As other posters have noted my bathroom habits are my own business. I don't want my toaster to only work with whole grain toast because it's been too long since I used Mr. Flushy.

  8. Knowledge Vs. Retrieval on Laptop Exams? · · Score: 1
In some cases yes, being able to find the answer quickly is a much more relavant life skill than being able to cram inane trivia into your mind for short periods of time.

But, in other circumstances it is vital to ensure that a student -KNOWS- relavent facts.

This may or may not relate to the orginal exam the poster spoke about.

FWIW if you are willing to accept goods damaged in shipping you deserve whatever headaches you get.

What if you are just buying the chip?

  10. Retraining & Culture. on Keyboards - Dvorak or Qwerty? · · Score: 1

People know QWERTY and are comfortable with it. It's not the best out there but it works for most people. The cost of retraining all those touch typists out there would be astronomical. If a switch were made what would happen in the transition period? Would each console have two keyboards?

Just because a "better" way is developed isn't allways enough if the "old" way works passibly well.

I would like to think it's an april fools joke as well. But I have seen cases where the person being sued is threatend with even more legal actions if they mention who is sueing them. If this turns out to be a gag I will be very pleased.
