If we're honest with ourselves, developers are paid very well for something most of us like doing. We don't have to destroy our lungs in coal mines nor do we have to do back breaking labor. If we don't like the conditions at our job there is plenty of demand for good developers at other jobs (or even consulting or independent work). The reason we're not unionized is because there would be benefit to doing so.
If people want to work and can find or create a job, let them. All of economic theory states that the economy will grow with more people, especially highly skilled people, rather than shrink. If anything we should remove the restrictions on working and living in this country if we want to see a boom.
It seems to me like carrying around a heavy battery is a waste. There already exists technology to power the car as you go with current running along (or underneath) the roadway. The infrastructure would be expensive, but I'm guessing over time it would prove more efficient than heavy batteries.
Some do. I've talked to girls who were poor and wanted babies (and some were already pregnant). For better or worse, biology doesn't care about income level, at least for civilizations above the level of letting people starve to death.
Everything 'broken' about Linux is already solved by Windows. Paying the MS tax is far easier than getting Linux OS developers to all agree on common standards that would make life easy for Linux App developers. It's easier than getting hardware manufacturers to start supporting Linux. It's easier than getting game developers to support Linux.
If you want Linux, use Linux. If you want an OS to do the things Windows does, use Windows. If you want both, dual boot.
Well, the contract was written like that on purpose. The toll operator thinks higher speed limits will increase their revenue by enough to make up for the difference in price.
I don't really understand why we're going over this for the 50 thousandth time on slashdot, but as always, good comments are good, bad comments are bad. Comments that describe the interface of the function you created and how its supposed to be used are good. Comments that say "increment the variable" are worthless and perhaps worse than worthless as they add maintenance problems when the underlying code is later changed and nobody bothers to change the comments as well.
But we could take a nice tour of our own solar system in that time. Although something like a 30 year mission might be more practical.
Speaking of interstellar travel, the more I learn about space, the more I want to take care of this blue marble we're living on. It's basically the only thing keeping us alive while we float through space.
Businesses like Pandora were never powerful enough to take on the RIAA. But if radio stations will be affected then major contenders like Clear Channel will get into the ring.
When times are good, save up for times that will be bad. An HSA is one tax efficient vehicle for medical expenses but due to contribution limits you'll probably need more than that. Basically spend less than you earn and save the rest for the future. If you're smart enough to be in IT then you're smart enough to know that you will have medical expenses in the future and you're being paid better than the average worker now. Plan accordingly.
The game companies can make more money (or not, in some cases) because of Day-1 DLC. I know we get emotional about games but it's no different than a restaurant offering sides with the main dish. If you want everything cheaply, wait for the game of the year edition. If you want everything but aren't willing to wait, pay the piper. If you don't care about the DLC just buy the main game. I don't see how throwing a conniption fit is going to solve any problems, especially when we're just talking about games.
I suppose if they were selling a video of them casting a spell then that would be okay. What isn't okay is them selling a spell or magic casting service thereof. A video is a tangible item. A spell, not so much.
Your recommendations are fair, however a union wouldn't obviate the need to save for the future.

I think you underestimate the number of parents who see that as a win-win situation.

Check the price of a 2 year contract from verizon vs. a pay as you go plan from t-mobile or virgin mobile. Do the math then get back to me.
Most customers will pay 1200 for a 600 phone as long as they can pay it month to month in stead of all at once. Welcome to modern consumerism.
So former U.S. Official, which department did you work for?
I can't believe no one has mentioned it yet but space exploration is still pretty awesome. Donate the money to NASA!

If you want to lower the amount of pesticides in your vegetables, wash them before eating/cooking.

I have a feeling they're right.
I've got a 110 hp Kia Rio and 80 mph feels comfortable to me too.

If I had mod points, they'd go to you. This is the root of the problem. Knowing how to code is beside the point.

Mine is a 2600 also! But mine is made by Atari because I wanted a system made for gaming. I'm sure they're pretty much the same thing though.

Or at least cite what they copy from.
