Not surprised they removed it. It was a bad idea anyway. Maybe there slowly tring to move them in instead of "forcing" on to people. Its a famous MS tatic. until (succeed) try { again(); }
Why, becuase sites like/. are running the same damn story several times a week. Spreading FUD is not making matters any better. We are all aware of how bad the market is right now.... lets leave it at that. Unless your touching something completly news...
What do you use to define server or workstation ? Server could mean, dedicated server doing things like HTTP or FTP only. It could also mean a machine that provides some sort of network service. If the second is that case, what about people like my mother inlaw. She uses Mandrake 7.2 has here only OS. She also has her website on her machine and what not. Is this a server or workstation ?
How about the other way around ? The machine handles serving webpages all day... but is also used for Q3A once a day (or a few times a day)
Some people would say that what it does more then 51% of the time is what it is. Where do you draw the line. Its a difficault thing to say.
How many machines are running Linux vs NT vs BSD, is more possiable, imo
Today, its illegal, tommorow its legal, round and round we go. Does these mean that I have to stop port scanning my ISPs port scanner ?
Which leads me to my point. ISPs around the world are scaning there customers all day long. Does this mean its illegal for them as well ? As many people bellow said, how many ports need to be scanned before its a port scan ? Lets say my budy has a Q3A server. Its not on a standard port, so I try 27961 - 27970, oh no... I just did a port scan, or did I ? I am brute forcing a connection to a series of ports on another computer I don't own.
So, if programs like nmap are "illegal" does that mean also for the people who do use it for legal purposes. What happens if me and a friend are setting up a server, we want to know whats open.... so we scan it real quick.
About 5 years ago, I had a friend of mine working for this company maintaining there servers. One of the machines they has, was a Compaq. For about 6 months, they had non-stop read errors when trying to read there raid system. Compaq sent out ~20 techs to take a look at it, none of them where able to figure out what was failing. One day, my friends father was in there, and noticed one of the chips appear to be offset from the rest of the chips on the card. (SCSI raid card) They ended up figuring out that Compaq used an organic flux that wasn't wiped off properly. And started growing and walking away. Which was very odd.
My question is, will we see things like this with the OLCD panels ? Will our entry laptops start getting "fuzzy" after there 10 years old. Since its organic, are there possiable fugture health hazards ? Maybe I don't fully understand these displays, but it scares me either way:)
What do you expect ?! Do you really think they would use some form of encryption ?? If your worried about people sniffing your mouse movements in Quake or what you type, don't buy one. Its as simple as that.
Seriously though, this was back in the eailer 90s, tech as changed quite a bit since then. Still, with all of the new types of encryption over different ports using different types of transport. Its a hell of a thing to pick apart. Better them then me:)
I have wanted to try out IPv6 on my LAN, but not sure it will cause more problems. I know few applications can handle it, and how backwords comptiable is it ? Since all of these IPs are behind a firewall, it won't make that much of a difference.
I think its great that they have created a deadline. I think more places in tyhe world should do the same. Its kind of everyone else is waiting for everyone to start.
This is more then people just seeing this on the side walk. I have heard about it on TV,/. and other news sites. So, IMO they got what they wanted. Do something crazy like this, get everyone to talk about it... Its like the "make 7up yours" I still laugh everytime I think of that it. I am sure they got in some kind of trouble for that stunt. It shocked people and got the job done. Same thing Howard Stern does every single morning.
.. and they wonder why no one is buying them. The last time I was at stables they wanted well over $500 for a top of the line Palm. Thats crazy, of course I am not gonna buy it. Since everyone and his mother already has one, theres no reason to upgrade. I'll stick with my Palm III, thanks.
You already know what kind of work they can do and how quickly they can produce results. You can find out a lot about them before you even raise the question.
Computer jobs are becomming hard to find, there are tons of people out of work now. A lot of good talent is being passed by. Too many people go to school for a year or 2, and get very high paying jobs. Why not higher someone whos been programming for fun since they where young.
Like you said, it gives something back to the community
Now, of course... there are drawbacks. They might be employed already, or any number of things the previous posters said. I think overall is a great idea. After all, this is how I have my present job.:)
Becuase, in general they aren't. Sure, there are plenty of people who are very rich and very happy and vice versa. I know of too many people whos wives are with them for 1 reason, becuase they have money. Anyone who says that doesn't happy, needs to get there head checked. I used to work for a company that where the boss had so much fscking money, he didn't know what to do with it all. His wife was trying to take everything from him, his friends where only around for one reason. Its pretty common.
Also, another thing to look at is that money changes people and the orginal ideas seem to get lost. I have witness this many times in the past.
To be completly honest, my family owns the largest wood working shop on the east coast. I had the option to take over the business, I declined. My reasons where that my family is very Cut Throat, very gready, and will do anything to screaw over another family member. This is not a joke, its very serious. Sure, I could have made boat loads of money, but I would have suffered every single day.
I have had many people in the past disagree and say, "Man I would have just done it!". You can't even begin to understand it unless your put in that postion. So, all in all, money isn't everything. Yet, its nice to have.
Umm, not even close. I have been living on my own for 6 years now. My GF makes another $20,000/year. So, the 2 incomes make it liveable. I don't have to worry about retiredment time, its been done takening care of since I was born... until (succeed) try { again(); }
Guess what sparky, money isn't everything.:) I would rather make my salary of ~$15,000/year and be very happy with what I do. Then make insaine ammounts of money and not be happy. I am pretty sure he likes what he does.
Ok, startrek was cool for a long time. The recent shows have pretty much sucked. Its only getting worse, when are they going to call it quits and call it a day....
We need to bring back tar and feathering (or would that be tar gzip and feater ?), beheadings, boiling people in oil, and crusifictions. (How ever you spell it)
No, this is not OT or a troll post. I am being quite serious, I think the problem in the world is that there isn't enough capital punishments. If someone does somethign seriously wrong, you beat that seneseless with a baseball bat. With in a few years, people would stop doing stuiped things in fear.

_if_ python has gone GPL, I wonder how long it will be before PHP 4 is GPLed again ..

There are soooo many loop holes in this.
until (succeed) try { again(); }
Sure, its still there. They just make it difficault for you to find it. *hint*
until (succeed) try { again(); }
Ok, so maybe 100 (200 at most) OS/2 users. Big deal. There not nearly enough to matter.
until (succeed) try { again(); }
until (succeed) try { again(); }
Thats a very good point. OS/2 and BeOS shouldn't be on that list. There are what 2 or 3 users of both ?
until (succeed) try { again(); }
Does that mean that Microsoft is the "Flesh eating" virus ?
until (succeed) try { again(); }
