  1. Re:DCMA Anyone? on Reverse Engineered 802.11b+ Drivers · · Score: 4, Informative

IANAL, but I believe the DMCA explicitly *allows* reverse engineering when the goal is interoperability. Since the official FAQ for these cards says linux isn't supported, it seems to me the interoperability argument would hold.

  2. Advanced release for purchase? GPL? on Red Hat 9 To Be Released March 31 · · Score: 1

I guess I can't really fault them for releasing early to paid subscribers before being available by FTP, but I have to wonder -- does this comply with the GPL? What if the time delay were a month instead of a week? Or a year?

I suppose a subscriber can still redistribute the images using their own bandwidth.

    Seriously!

SG-1 is fine for filler and did its job keeping me awake until Farscape aired, but there's not enough there to keep me tuning every episode. I just don't understand how shows like "Farscape" and the "Invisible Man" can get cancelled in their prime, while SG-1 and worse (i.e. "Crossing Over") seem to thrive.

Sci-Fi shouldn't let itself be run totally by ratings, otherwise we'll end up with Sci-Fi meets Jerry Springer!

  4. Already predicted by Standard Model of physics? on More on the Fine Structure Constant · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe I'm missing something from the article, but I don't think that "constants" like alpha changing is a new idea (though it is very cool if alpha changing over time can be directly observed like this). Changing coupling "constants" is already a part of the established "Standard Model" of physics, and is an essential feature of Grand Unified Theories.

Grand Unified Theories rely on all of the interaction strengths for all known forces (Strong force, weak force, electromagnetic force, and sometimes gravity) becoming the same at some energy scale earlier on during the formation of the Universe. In the present Universe, the strong force that holds quarks together is much stronger than the electromagnetic force, but if GUTs hold true then they were much closer earlier on.

See here for a graph illustrating this effect, or rather its failure for one particular GUT theory. This is the first I found using a quick google search for "GUT" and "coupling constant"; it is a common plot shown for papers on GUTs in general.

Its been a couple of years since I studied this stuff. I'd be interested to know if this article is pointing to something new theoretically.

I haven't seen him mentioned -- I thought the Gateway series was pretty good.

Dan Simmons' Hyperion was fantastic, but I also enjoyed most of his horror stuff too - much better than King IMHO. I also think Cherryh deserves mention for the recent "Foreigner" series. I can't wait for "Defender."

  6. Re:Neutrinos - AMANDA is more than "detection" on Polar Detector Spots Neutrinos · · Score: 2

This isn't completely true. Earlier radio-chemical experiments like Homestake and SAGE were of the "Oops, there one was" variety. More modern detectors, like SuperK do detect the neutrino direction by detecting the charged particle (like an electron or muon) following a neutrino interaction in the detector -- the higher the neutrino energy the better the pointing. SuperK relied on their ability to track neutrinos when they published their results in support of neutrinos having mass a couple years ago. IMHO, one of the really cool things about AMANDA is that they are deep in ice and not a big tank of water. It was "built" by dropping long strings of detectors into melted columns in the ice. With neutrino detectors bigger is better; a detector like AMANDA could be improved by dropping more detectors into the ice. To improve on a detector like SuperK you need to dig a bigger hole underground and make a bigger tank of water -- something which may be a more difficult engineering problem.

  7. "You don't need to use Deja..." on Deja Linking Ads Within Usenet Posts? · · Score: 1

This is precisely the point. I don't use Deja to post. So why should they be able to insert advertising links into my words as if I endorsed the products? This is exactly like someone taking something I wrote and inserting it in a magazine ad without my permission.

While I wouldn't approve of the policy, I suppose Deja could work it into their user's agreement that posts made with Deja could be altered in this way. But I don't see that they have a right to turn my independent posts into ads. (IANAL)

I just searched my posts made since yesterday and found no such links inserted (a few of the posts even mentioned "modems.") I'll be watching for it now.

  8. Who wants a "GUI Standard?" on X Windows Must Die! · · Score: 1

The last thing I want is to have to run KDE because the masses decide it should be the standard. Yuck!

X is just a bunch of graphics primitives. Lots of middle level APIs exist to make it more manageable for programmers, and if anything needs to be done its cleaning up, optimizing and standardizing stuff on that level and below. But I think one of the strong points of X is I can configure every little widget and pull down menu to suit my needs. Don't make ME run YOUR desktop.

That said, KDE and Gnome are both looking pretty spiffy these days; maybe it's time to give them another try.
