Uh, dude, she has a band. She made her *own* CD for quite a substantial amount of money. Now there's legislation on the table that would allow that CD to be copied, and have *others* make all the money off it.
One of my friends in college nearly had a fit when she saw this piece.
"You mean someone can take my CD, that I paid out of my own money to have recorded at a studio, copy it and sell it for their own all over the web??? That isn't right!!!"
Uh duh. All you have to do is press escape and it stops the animation in the current frame (along with any music/sounds being played on the page, Flash animations, additional page loading, etc.)
There's all kinds of cool keyboard shortcuts in IE. My favorite is pressing F11 to get full screen mode. Browsing the web in full screen absolutely rocks.
Out of curiousity, why would I pay to go to a conference regarding Apple and FreeBSD? Number one, there will obviously be a major bias towards Apple software products (which I don't care for). But besides that, there is a TON of information online on the nuances of FreeBSD, a TON of mailing lists, and a TON of people willing to help out for free?
He didn't enforce his trademark for the last year and a bit
Bullshit. So me and a bunch of hardware hackers build a new machine, calling it an "OpenApple". We sell them out of our garage for close to a year, until finally they become so popular that most of the computer industry picks up on it, including Apple itself. Apple now files a complaint.
How could the original SSH guys possibly know how big a breadth OpenSSH would get in a year? It's just a bunch of hackers, after all. Not a definable company.
No, he is trying to prevent the use of a name which is identical to his product's. It is a very reasonable request ("continue to make the product, just please don't use that particular name").
Next time, try to not hide being an idiot with bombastic text.
SSH is different in that it's not really a word in the English language, whereas "Word" is. If MS tried to enforce a lawsuit regarding the name "Word" to any extent, they'd likely be laughed out of court.
OK, I asked this of Hemos and he responded. Now I'll ask it of you. Why doesn't Slashdot allow new editors to be interviewed for the site? I would like to try out, and I think I've made a pretty good contribution in my 1 1/2 years here (1/2 year spent being an anonymous coward).
I know the primary motivation here is to clog Carnivore with Spam, but let's just say that the CIA knew you were sending information through a service similar to this. It's essentially a substitution cipher, using a sentence = letter/phrase base. Substitution ciphers on a whole are *notoriously* easy to decrypt, whether they be numbers/letters, Caesar, or in this case Spam.
I would probably continue using PGP (or don't send stuff through email at all you wouldn't want to be known by others).
If anyone over at NASA is reading this, congratulations on a job well done. I watched the landing today and it was quite well stages -- much better than previous mishaps with Mars. Congrats, guys.
First, kudos to Google. I like Google, I like Dejanews (before they went all dot-commy) and I like Yahoo. Hopefully they can mesh all three together.
A note on searches through Google: right now everything seems quite limited. It is only searching through the past year, and even the advanced search is lacking some of strong features of the Deja engine (searches through particular dates, anyone?) Hopefully they can get both parts back up and running, because I really want to see posts prior to 1999.
The thread system Google is incorporating though, in my mind, is much cleaner and a hell of a lot cleaner. Kudos for that too.
And lastly, more of a dumb request than anything: if they have the full Unicode data (I don't know if Deja axed or not when they were archiving the groups originally-- they might have) can we have the browser translate the dumb picture? Yes, some of its porn, and most people would go to the site just to see that, but there's also a lot of cool anime out there that's snuck under the web's copyright radar that I'd like to see. It sucks that I have to use www.thevalkyrie.com to get decent newsgroup galleries.
I'm pretty happy about this. I mean, I'll be able to continue downloading great songs for no money down, no payments... ever.
However, on some small level, I'm a little disappointed, particularly by some of the artists involved-- those not in the monetary leagues of Metallica, Limp Bizkit and Britney Spears-- that we're stealing out of their pockets. I think MP3's are great, and Napster as a concept is good.
But considering that I'm a writer, I would be pretty peeved if my stuff was being passed around for free. That is, stuff that I don't want passed around.
the arrogant, delusional monomania of its founder, a man who had clearly come to believe in his own immortality and was unable to grasp the realities of the world
It's too bad. I thought MST3K rocked.

The cover art she drew herself.
Next time, read the post before replying.

I guess it's good depending on who you talk to.

OK, I have only one question. What movie does this screenshot come from on the site?

Bullshit. The guy's just trying to protect the name. That has little, if anything, to do with money.
This man had way too little Ritalin this morning.
From personal experience, don't bother trying to respond to him about this stuff directly. He never reads it and doesn't care. Chris
Now they're going to relaunch it?
If you own a home, you pay for the taxes for your local library. It has nothing to do with having a job.
Why don't you yourself ever post any stories, Cowboy Neal?

Does anybody else feel this twinge of guilt?
Flattery will get you nowhere here. :)
