Just wait, soon we will have the realplayer verison of winamp (ugly ads, etc... thats why i refuse to use realplayer, its too much crap). AOL (trust me, Time Warner name will eventually be phased out) is quickly becomming a behemoth and the way to stop them is ordering the FTC to stop the merger. Yes, order them. We are 'the people' and if you check our constitution, you'd notice that its all about the people, not some greedy corporations. Down with corporations, up with apple pie.
Its more than just that now. If it was a pack of theives, its not anymore. I'm a law abiding citizen and I downloaded DeCSS a few months ago to check it out. Ok, so it really could be used to copy a dvd movie, I'm perfectly willing to admit that. I still buy dvd's... until recently. A 5-10gig movie is just not my forte. Its gonna take something with a bit better compression ratio to get movies on the net (well... any more than they already are). Threatening and trying to sue the hell out of a few people (coincidentally, the WRONG people) is not gonna do the MPAA a bit of good. Its now all about principle. As an American, I see it all around me. Corporations are immoral doctrines, simply because they are controlled 95% of the time by shareholders and investors that want to get RICH. Its all big money now. Noone gets to keep their personal rights once they work for a corporation. If I was to write a piece of software right now that helped me at my current job, it would, according to the papers I signed when I got the job, belong to the corporation. Say I sat at home one day, bored, jumped on my linux machine, wrote a few scripts to help me with batch commands I have to run at work, and took them to work and used them. Apparently, I forfeited all my rights to it before writing it. I didn't come here to forfeit my rights. I came to this job because I need money, plain and simple. Oh and because CompUSA is NOT a fun place to work, so I got the hell out. Corporations are typically full of shit. Don't get blinded by corporate speak of capitalism, they couldn't care less as long as their profit margins rise and stock goes up. We should revamp the whole business system. just more smack from a rambling fool
You think YOU have problems? I have 15 computers (mostly pre penitum) and 1 10 foot folding table from 1980 and 1 7 foot folding table from 1980. This is in a room thats about 7x7 with a walkway thats adds about 6 feet to it (10 foot table takes up from far left to 2 feet from door). I also have 3 chairs in there (for guests) and an inhouse network w/adsl. I think I'd be a prime candidate for the rackmount excuse.:)
I can't believe the crap hardware manufacturers get away with. Prices for custom motherboards are way to expensive. Private R&D only goes so far and the increased cost are grossly inflated... Just look at Kevin Mitnick and the amount of money company's "lost" because he had some data sitting on his hard drive (that he copied from their system, not destroying the previous data). Microsoft proved that R&D is a perfect excuse to up the price on the next product (upgrade. yes, win98 IS an upgrade, ask any dumb end user or tech... break them into a thousand pieces.)
Why? Because AOL, with its millions upon millions of users, now has a social responsibility to its users. AOL's new job, as a result of its taking billions of dollars from its customers (dont let tech support fool ya, you are a CUSTOMER not a member.. that fluffy crap makes me sick), is to take care of its customers and to uphold their rights. With a name like AMERICA online, you would think that they would naturally support and adhere to all the laws and policies, but apparently free speech is not withing their corporate doctrine.
But the universities' are for educating the people and take tax grants. They are establishments for the people. Therefor, it IS my dime. And yours. And every other taxpayers. "We the people" dictate policies of this country and universities are a part of our country's policies.
Actually, if you check out the latest in tank tech, you'd notice rubberized treads are available and capable of leaving roads in one piece.. now as for the weight limit on the concrete, thats a different story.
Actually it translates to "Stop fucking bugging me about it, I got work to do"
Calm down, take a deep breath, and go fuck yourself. Sorry, but I had to revert to that. That last comment ya left was a little to harsh. Plus I don't appreciate someone with a hair up his ass about something deciding how someone's comment was anti-whateverthehellyourepresent, in this case opensource, and then bashing everything with a big wooden club.
I guess the point is, part of being a (slashdot) nerd/geek/etc is having a sense of humor and the wisdom to not attack someone before a minute amount of brain activity.
Please, chill. He's not bashing open source and you're venting onto the one and only cmdrtaco.
Oh and before I go... I/we DO care about comments, I/we DO NOT *only* care about learning from his successes and failures, forget about the global programmer community as far as you refer to it, focus on THE community, not one specific sect, and promote openness and freedom for all people, not just 'your' people.
Ok but its the GOVERNMENT THAT USES THEM! I'm not worried about MS bugging my phone, they won't bust down my door. Its not so much the bugging of my phone that worries me, its bugging of my phone by groups that are in power or want control of me that bothers me.
Jumped on Forrester's site and did a search for linux and came up with a few, do it yourself and look at the negativity towards linux (and positivity towards linux companies that commercialize... does forrester even have a clue whats going on in the linux *community*?) pointless banter -=chiphead
Not too bad for geeks. Mediaone is officially fully 2way thru the whole city, Bellsouth has upgraded about 75% for dsl, and a slew of isp's (including the one i work for) are offering sweet deals on dsl service (got some mail the other day for 47 bucks a month adsl... 1.5 down 256 up...). We got all night supermarkets (down here us rednecks is a'callin'em grocery stores), 24 hour food places (denny's, steak'n'shake, etc), a new big theater every year (currently 4 big ones, like 30 smaller ones) and tons of 'geekwork'. Sure, I still need to create the ultimate geek stop (i was thinking a lug/coffee/juice/internet club w/ independent performers.. but none of that circus crap...). Of course, then again, for some reason most people around here think jax. just plain sux.
>>There was trade with the Native American Indians
Then we 'traded' their asses to reservations. Yeah... thats real honorable there. Bam, group of people ripped off.
>>When you were a kid, you may have traded >>baseball cards... what happened during that >>process?
I'll tell you what happened, there was always some little smartass bastard the had a new Beckett than you and ended up ripping your ass off (or you get ripped by a dealer.. THERE is the connection to a corporation..). Another group of people, ripped off.
>>free trade is the way to go
Ok so there is SOMETHING I completely agree with. However, the concepts of honor, truth, and REAL justice (not loophole justice) need to be THE most important aspect when practicing free trade (NOT end PROFIT... thats what corrupts the corporation)
>>trade has always benefited human beings
Only when I happened to have some extra milk I could trade for meat, in the days of the ancients. No one wants to admit we are at a point that trade in its traditional sense no longer needs to exist. Give it away more often (and NO, donating a billion dollars to a fund is not what I mean, I mean walk out on the streets, buy some people some groceries, pay some peoples excessive phone bills.. do it for real, and live for the better, not for the 'better' rich life.
>>I am unsure that the Seatlle rioters realize >>this.
Now we start crowing. Bad programming is bad programming, and don't tell us not to bitch at MS for it. And why dont you fuckers ever leave an email? Maybe one of the sane among us (like me, on occasion) would like to find out more about your position (and change it for you..mwhahah.. hehe can't...resist...must..brainwash...)
Oh look, what a coincidence... >2. Passport runs on IIS. Now we start crowing. Bad programming is bad programming, and don't tell us not to bitch at MS for it. Coming soon to a universe near you..
I think we should just all start slinging fast ethernet out our windows and meet up in the middle somewhere. It'd probably get done before any of these businesses got in gear.
Hell, I'll do it. Let's see, I'm in Jacksonville Florida, and I've got about 300 feet of cat 5 cable.. and a 8 port linksys 10mbit hub.. I'll serve my neighborhood (full 10mbit shared up and down:)...woohoo). Who's next? HEHE. The new, Open Source model of internetworking. Screw the Cables and the Bells.
Yes, but kiddies, don't forget, SOMEBODY has to run those ftp servers (and iceCAST servers) for you damn leeches. You might not upload, but your sure as hell download. Don't get me wrong, I've been there (and don't let these others trick ya, they've all been there too..). Now I've moved on. I run Linux and everythings free.:) @home is really in a plot w/Microsoft to limit bandwidth of Open Source writers so they can't upload their new code. --[YALC]-- Yet Another Linux Convert
If it weren't for people whining and bitching about SOMETHING, nothing would get done. Why make the best out of a situation when the possibility is there to make it BETTER? Its called advancement. Its life. Don't avoid it and take whats given to you, make something of it. Although I do agree on the legal system having lots of fun problems (my dad's a lawyer even..ha)
The end of it all will be @Home making more money off a service that existed before they implemented the ONadvantage crap. They are going to offer a premium service of higher up-bandwidth for more money. They use 'user abuse' as the perfect taget for the SCAM. Thank God @Home isn't down here in Jacksonville (although I do feel kinda dirty for using AT&T's mediaone.. yeah thats right.. AT&Ts.)
What would that be? That if you have a 'girlfriend' and break up with her, she deserves half of your freaking assests? (yes, they really are trying to get that put into law there... THATS not something I'd prefer)
Just wait, soon we will have the realplayer verison of winamp (ugly ads, etc... thats why i refuse to use realplayer, its too much crap). "by virtue of .. deployment, marketing, offers to sell and sale of personalized vid...."
Sounds like a bad lawsuit to me, because you simply cannot patent a type of marketing and sales, else get-rich-quick-ripoff schemes would not exist.
If anybody tried to take away my playtime, I'd have to kick some ass. :)
All I can say is...
