Sort of. Most of the shuttle budget is just paying the army of people and maintaining facilities. You don't really save/spend any more money whether you fly 10 times a year, or only 5.
>I value Space Exploration, but not enough to commit any resources to it. You're not going to convince me otherwise, but if you study, campain, raise money, found companies or support agencies, maybe you can make a difference and see your goals realized.
That's the damn problem, we're *not* committing any resources to it. The money spent on NASA doesn't even register on a pie graph of the federal budget. The US spends roughly twenty times as much money on welfare than we do on NASA. (NASA's budget is about $14 billion.) And the manned spaceflight budget is only a little over a third of that. (About $5 billion.)
"The ways to get around this ill-conceived scheme will be common knowledge about a week after the first "leases" expire. "
A week *after* the first *leases* expire? I'll have to resort to astonishment if this isn't cracked a week before the first leases begin. This isn't an anti-piracy scheme, it's a way to increase profits. It's hard to say who this will appeal to. Bleh, no matter how you look at it, it's accelerating Microsoft's already "damn quality, full speed ahead!" development pace.
On a related note, I think MS has finally jumped the shark. There's a "second generation" CEO in power, and the company is showing all the signs I've seen from this situation before. It's all downhill from here, as far as individual human beings go.

I get the feeling that open source is the only reason this project ever saw the light of day. Whatever spirit Netscape had is gone, and I'm under the distinct impression this got only token support from management, and was primarily done off hours while the guys were forced to do crap like NS 4.5+.

Hehe, Bellsouth's service is so poor I see people complaining of sub-ISDN speeds from their DSL. I'm on now with a 56k modem, and while I always get v90 connects, I have YET to see 4k/s, and it's usually meandering along at a very uneven 1-2k. Yep, I'm shopping for yet another ISP...crossing my fingers TWC gets off their kazoos and offers cable modems around here.

I think it's almost certain that if they do one, they'll do the other as well. I know several people who only turn on their machines to get on AOL (which boggles my mind). You think microsoft is bad...imagine a world in which AOL has taken over with Java, Linux, and whatever else they can get their grubby little hands on. AOL software-only boxes...pay by the use java word processors...it's not a world I'd want to live in. Even the idiots deserve better.
They've been saying on the news here it's more like 40 years, which seems a little excessive to me, but hey it was the local Fox station's news(they're a tad bit prone to sensationalism...kind of the same way the Pope is a tad catholic). I'm glad the guy's getting prosecuted tho', what kind of a world would be living in if the cops didn't pursue physical vandals?

Military and entitlements are over a trillion.
I knew a guy who got fired for having the about:mozilla quote written on his whiteboard. Girl who wrote it got fired too. Those things are hazardous!
