We have gone from a post-Truth world to a post-Government world where absolutely everything the government does it does so with emergency powers not intended for that purpose.

    - POTUS using executive orders to determine immigration policy.
    - The purchase and import of German cars is a national security threat.
    And now this.
    - Companies (small enough to simply fail) going bust constitutes a natural disaster.

There's a name normally given to a leader who uses powers without oversight or recourse in a way not intended to push through things that wouldn't succeed through a normal political process.

Is that before or after you take into account constant factory modifications? Telsa is ramping up and spending money doing it. And they're not done: https://www.teslarati.com/tesl...

Also that labour estimate is final labour costs of assembly. That doesn't include overhead, rework, factory downtime, production changes, all of which seem to be happening constantly as Tesla tries to ramp up. Looking at the numbers it would seem that they imply a steady state operation.

However most EVs sold in Germany are french

To say "french" is a bit too generous. German can manufacturers have not put serious efforts into the EV business yet. Neither really has anyone else in Europe with the single notable exception of Renault.

That is changing. 2017 saw the Renault Zoe head and shoulders above all other EV manufacturers. German manufactures had position 3, 7, 8 and 10. With the remainder being a few Asian cars and some Teslas.

In January this year the e-Golf outsold the Zoe for the first time. Year to date paints the Germans in a very different picture:

    1: Smart For2 ED 1947
    2: VW e-Golf 1905
    3: Renault Zoe 1719
    4: Kia Soul EV 1668

    8: Smart For4 ED 1058
    9: BMW 225xe 943
    10: Mercedes E350e 813

Number 11, 12, 16 and 18 are also German manufacturers.

Expect to see many more German EVs on German roads.

    It's so bad, that

Ahh but is it. For all the theoretical work that has been done on the topic the impact has been what in real terms of reliability? Where are the buildings falling down, the money disappearing from accounts? Where's the physics simulations gone wrong, or the random data corruption? Where are the reliability problems when serving up content? Where are the lockups and crashes of our devices? Where is the detrimental impact to our communication?

You see, it's so bad that companies who handle truly critical data did a bit of a study and implemented ECC while the entire world itself effectively experiences zero reliability issues.

You want to spend the extra money, go for it, but the reality is our computers are plenty reliable for even very critical tasks (workstations, rather than consumers) without ECC memory, and we have a good 28 years of experience proving that there's no reason at all to roll out ECC as the norm.

You claim my statement is ignorant, all the while ignoring the fact that it's not likelihood that governs our lives. It's risk. And risk is likelihood combined with the consequence, which for the personal computer is so close to insignificant that it... well it's insignificant. The same can not be said for a datacentre processing bank transactions, or Google being paid a fortune to look after critical data for other companies.

Samsung does not release updates for every version of every model phone

Hmmm I swear those goalposts were over there a minute ago from your S8. No matter, you'd still be quite wrong. Samsung literally push out several hundreds of firmware updates every year for the line of phones, they are all published and you can go sort through them yourself, no need to take my word for it. Just because you don't get them doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Currently right now the latest security patch level for Android is May 2018. The following Samsung devices have had updated firmware rolled out: Galaxy S7 J2 J1Mini J7 A6 A8. The flagship devices get updated towards the end of the month with a more staged approach, S9/+ S8/+ Note8 already having updated firmware out in Asia, some of the EU, and some US carriers with the remainder expected to be done within the next week or two. Until then if you're on the unlucky list you're just going to have to live with your 3 week old security version (April release). Hell the J2 got the update the same day that Google published it. Their policy is to update flagship phones towards the end of the month (cheaper phones are good for ironing out bugs in security fixes).

My lack of updates was not exclusive to my carrier.

Doesn't need to be, either way it's not Samsung's fault. Your phone has had it's updates published regularly.

Yes, OS updates aren't security updates. They are, however, no less fucking important.

I think you need some perspective. You're owed security, but not an endless string of new features (not that modern Android really has any).
